    Watching this on my 8GB/256GB "base" M1 Mac Mini ordered the day it was announced. Replaced a 27" Late-2012 i7 iMac as my "main" computer. The M1MM has been utterly flawless with daily home use. I've got a fast external 1TB Thunderbolt SSD for data storage and a 2TB USB-3.1 SSD for Time Machine connected, and I recently splurged on the new 27" Apple 5K Studio Display. I very rarely edit 1080p HD videos (with iMovie) but I do a lot of desktop publishing using Pages and presentation slideshows using Keynote. Everything just works. Every. Single. Time. While I don't stress my Mac Mini to the breaking point, neither does it with me. Unlike a lot of computers I've used over the years, I really get the feeling this little silver box wants to help me succeed and it still makes me very happy every time I use it.

    I’ve got the base M1 mini, base m1 MacBook Pro and the upgraded M1 iMac with none binned chip. All serve different purposes in the household and all have 8GB RAM. 95% of what most people do on a computer is single thread tasks and unless your a 60 tab nutter the M1 flies for that and is nearly silent. I did pick up an M1 Pro 14 inch for more demanding tasks on a sale 6 months ago but kind of wish I hadn’t now as not pushing it. Having said that 1TB 16GB and 10 cores is nice future proofing. Great summary as the M1 Mac mini is still probably my favourite due to the price to performance 😊

    you are my new fav reviewer. I'm a rookie . I'm a casual you tube cruiser ,email monger, and eBay shopper , and Amazon whiz kid, with all those tabs open at once ..after many videos and much note taking I just got M1 brand-new in 2020 still in the factory seal. Gb of Ram 8 gram ;225 ssd..it's fine but I wish I had bought 16 gb ram..after watching your very well thought out and taught out program ,I'm ok with what I have for now.Thank you sir, I have peace! I have a huge powerful self-built gaming rig, which also can handle other heavy tasks. Never used any Apple products before, but bought the iPad Air 5 a month ago, and I’m really pleased with it. So perhaps I should buy an base model M1 Mac mini, just to see if I will like the platform for Desktop stuff. If I do, then I’m buying the Mac Studio, and retiring the Mac Mini as a dedicated Linux device. One Mac Mini for Linux, and one Mac Studio for Mac OS X. Sounds like a nice setup.

    Exactly this, my first "Apple" experience was my M1 8gb, replaces a goood I5 2500k for normal use, the machine works flawless, I only remember one or two glitches with Big Sur, but the speed and silent in my room is just too hard to avoid, i just miss some programs which are extremely expensive and there is no cracked programs LOL... oc not a problem from the mac.

    The basic M1 Mac Mini, in my opinion, is an excellent PC for people that are going to college for majors that don't require scientific software. If all you are going to do is to do writing and research, then it is a perfect and inexpensive machine. I am going through my master's degree, and a Mac Mini would fill that job perfectly. Many people want a magical PC that does everything they want at a minimal price. The basic Mini is not going to fill that void; not even the high-end Mini would. A Mac is not a gaming machine; yeah, it might run a few games, but not the mainly used ones. Have I played games on a Mac? Absolutely, the old Warcraft, Starcraft, and Ages of Empire series on my PowerPCs (I do have a nice collection of old computers that I have bought over time, all of them in excellent condition, I have an Amiga 1000 that I purchased in 1986 and a MacSE30 that I bought in 1989 amongst others) so I have gone through all Apple cycles. A PC has a particular purpose in life; granted, a Windows PC is the Jack of all trades; it can do everything, right? (boy, am I going to get flamed for that comment 😂😂😂) BUT, and I admit that I have one that I use to play certain games from time to time, old games (MS Flight Sim, Ages of Empire series, Old Warcraft and Starcraft series), it has the MS Office 2021, which I have not used yet, besides its gaming it sits in a desk on the corner in my computer room (basement 😁). My most used and main computer is a 2017 13” MacBook Pro, which I take with me outside my house to do my essential writing. Anyway, enough BS BTW, I mainly use Linux 😂😂😂 Best regards and stay safe 🙏

      For the price of a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers just buy an m1 or m2 air and use it wherever you want

      @@hazyproduct1692 It is an option, with the amazing prices atApple refurbish store you can get a fairly inexpensive Mac Air. I, for once, when I do my research, I need a wide monitor to have a browser, word processor, and other needed apps, open at the same time. It is convenient to me. Still, my 2017 MacBook is my most precious tool that when I need to work on a writing project, I take it to my patio along with a drink 🥃 and a cigar. Cheers 🍻

      I agree, I bought a Mac mini M1 8 gigs, ram and 256 s.s.d. I watch you tube .email,ebay and 2 or 3 other tabs open all at the same time no problems at all. BUT I have this Naggin feeling I think I should get the 16 gig ram and 510 s.s.d. in the M2 while I can buy it discounted on the education website ( my wife is a teacher) and get a 1 terabyte of external s.s.dand stay right there for a couple decades!! think about it ! scot j

  • @core36
    @core36 Рік тому

    I got the 16gig ram configuration because I already knew that 8 isn’t enough. Wish I had 32gb but…
    Also I chose the 256gb storage because I figured I can just add a 1tb usb drive. But then I learned that by default, you can’t easily choose where software goes. Unreal engine for example will take up a significant amount of storage on the internal drive and the only way to change that is to manually move the software on the external drive and then create symlinks.

    • @TheDanEdwards

      Just make an external drive your Start Up disk. You'll need to install MacOS on the external drive if you haven't done so already.

    Would you believe my Mac mini Server (Mid 2011) is still going? Verrryyyy slowww though but still running. I wanted to replace it with the new M1 Mac mini now or should I wait for the M2 if it would ever come??? What do you think???

    • @GarrettCrespo
      @GarrettCrespo  Рік тому

      It depends on your use. If it’s a server replacement, the M1 will be fine. If you intend to use it for more than that, the M2 may be worth the wait.

    I bought a base M1 MM for $550 at Micro Center.
    I ran into limitations almost immediately but overall liked it.
    I returned it and planned to get one with 16GB of RAM.
    NBD what does 8GB of RAM cost, right?
    Wellllll in classic Apple fashion you can only get it from them for $900.
    So much for that idea.

    Thanks for the video. I must be doing something wrong, because on my base M1 Mac Mini it only takes having about five Safari tabs open before it starts using 2-3 GB of swap. If I also run Outlook and Teams and Word, I get the spinning beach ball pretty quickly. Any thoughts?

    • @GarrettCrespo

      Check login items and clear any caches. Other than that, I'm not sure why it would be acting like that unless youre loading super demanding webpages or have a ton of teams/outlook messages.

    • @GarrettCrespo

      Yes. However anything more than the basics for video editing and I’d recommend more memory. The base M1 computers only get away with the basics because of memory swap to those fast SSDs.

    The machine is full of compromises in a very specific way which makes it usable and yet pushes you to look at whats the next option... Its in a very akward place on purpose to get more money out of people. It bothers me. But the thing that makes me nuts is seeing how people justifies its flaws like they were the ones selling the product, when the ugly truth is Apple could make this thing a perfect product stopping the 8 Gigs version and offer the 16 version for not that much more money... But Apple is Apple and that wont happen.
