    These are old money, I guess, in the Versailles sense, but American old money is more about grass cloth wallpaper, blue and white China (and Chinoiserie in general), original art pieces, exceptional quality linens, treasures gathered from travels - a collected, curated aesthetic.

    Painted portraits, a leather bound book with hand written family stories lying on that gold table or on the harpsichord. A crystal chandelier is not bad too :D A display cabinet with all those china, silver, trinkets, etc. And never, ever, ever hang around in pyjamas!

    • @justlanchen
      @justlanchen  2 роки тому +6

      YES YES AND YES! All of these and the Crystal chandelier is spot on. After I edited my video I realized I didn’t add that in 😭😭 but it’s a staple in old money!!

      @geologick 2 роки тому +19

      Oh you can certainly hang around in pajamas! But they must be silk, and you must have a real velvet dressing gown draped over your shoulders, and you must be lounging on an antique fainting couch in a patch of sunlight reading a first edition classic novel, and there absolutely MUST be a silver tray atop the marble table next to you filled with a hot breakfast made by your live-in chef, with hot porridge, fresh fruits, a steaming pile of french toast, a rasher of bacon, a dish of yogurt, sausage links, pancakes, etc. etc. to suit whatever you happen to be in the mood for eating that morning. And your bejeweled mother must sweep into the room and cluck her tongue at your state of undress and bored expression, while your father gives you a wink from over the top of his newspaper.

    Old money always includes antique Persian rugs. The rugs are passed down. Rare rugs are the foundation of the old money look. Art for the floor.

      expensive rare rugs you are right. also, you need to have a few distinguish rooms such as dining room, a library (filled with expensive rare leather bound books, not cheap amazon prints) etc.. the decor is less about quantity and more about quality, some furniture look really old but somehow was kept in tip top condition through 3 generations etc.. it's about respect to your previous ancestors and working hard to continue their success and status

    Something interesting that may not be as well known about old money is knowing your heritage. You don't have to create a whole tapestry with your family tree on it (though it helps!) but being able to casually trace your lineage back to royalty is a very old money move. My great uncle came from old money, and his wife dedicated the second half of her life to genealogy. Thanks to her efforts, we have records of our relations dating back to the 1300s. And yes, there's royalty in there--as I suspect there will be for anyone who goes back far enough in their family history. Knowing those links and just which royalty you're descended from is a whole vibe. When my great aunt died, my little brother inherited a watch, I inherited a silk scarf, and my mother inherited her genealogy work. It's a genuine treasure trove. An important reminder - English royalty is not the only royalty out there; if your ancestors hailed from any country that had a monarchy long, long ago, you are probably descended from royalty as well :) There's something incredibly romantic about studying your lineage. There are a lot of folks out there whose lineage is lost to time, whether by destroyed records or otherwise. If it's something you're into, you can get your DNA mapped via Ancestry (or anywhere else really, but that one's the one I used), and other relatives of yours who did the same will appear and it will show you what percent relation you are with an estimate of whether they're a second cousin, immediate family, etc... Chances are, those family members and their fleshed out family trees can start filling in the gaps in your own family history to the point that you'll have a more complete picture of who you are and where you came from. Just something to think about.

      I'm adopted so I can't trace my lineage, but I like to pretend I'm descended from Charles II and Nell Gwynne.

      @Tatiana_Palii Рік тому +2

      I agree, knowing your family history is a must for that 'old money' lifestyle. But it doesn’t really matter whether you are related to royals or not (all people on the planet are related, since we all come from the same pre-historic ancestors). What’s more important, I guess, are the actual stories of your ancestors, not their titles and status, and your own attitude. There's nothing worse than a genealogy enthusiast that can't shut up about how terribly important his fish merchant ancestors were, for example. And, meanwhile, many of the actual aristocrats don't even care that much about some 17th century crowns and gowns in their attics. Taking your ancestors too seriously means taking yourself too seriously, and that's so middle-class :Р

    This exactly everything I have in my home and grew up this way. We have a wood panel library and 5 wood burning fireplaces and have lots of antiques and I have several generations of China . I'm in late 30s but grew up in what I was always told well to do family and was like growing up in museum but my home is more livable but still has all these items and don't do trendy but glad to see others appreciate this look. Now everything is decorated for Christmas and really beautiful. Some things not on list but looking around my home I think is also part of it is I have long brick driveway with tall walls in entrance with iron gates. I have a pool with the stone and x pattern around. We have a walled garden with pergola over with flowers on it. We have a basketball/tennis court (not used often but great for party tents) we have barn and horse stalls for our horses and tack room. Red doesn't have to be used usually seasonal but dark greens navy's and muted tones . Bringing nature indoors with animals animal print or anything hunt related. Plaid and floral fabric tweed and velvet. Having defined rooms for certain uses. Like the dinning room living room, den, library, sports memorabilia like skis tennis we have our old croquet set out in storage building maybe will put in boys room now she mentioned it. Taxidermy, collections of things, a dressing table in bedroom . Moldings and solid wood doors and brass or crystal door knobs is must and better quality than what's out there today. Having things look collected over time and not clutter or chessy looking.

    Old money in Denmark looks nothing like that 😅 You can have some antique pieces, but the main theme is timeless design furniture and moderation. Nice, if you are eloquent and well-educated. Most important is your high standard of living: quality food, daily exercise, meaningfull occupation and social circle. Usually you are committed to protecting the nature and supporting people in need. You pay attention to your mental and physical health and are flexible, opne-minded and innovative person. You don't waste money and time.

    Unless you live in a castle, large estate, or are from "old money", to adopt most of these would seem both pretentious and fake in the average home, a little bit ridiculous even, especially given the scale of the pieces. A large, preferably period property, is required to carry it off effectively.

    You are giving bad examples since you take them from the "Royal" family's estates, which are normally huge stately homes and castles - you need a HUGE HUGE house to be able to implement most of those. you need a lot of space, otherwise it looks bad and our of place. this is the reason those huge mansions have so much decor - they have a lot of space that need to/could be filled up with massive collections of items.
    A better way would be to see what upper class families (not royal but usually very wealthy) put in their homes, which are normally also large homes but not as large as a stately country home or a castle.

    • @justlanchen
      @justlanchen  Рік тому +1

      Yea I get what you’re sayin. I just think that other decor that could be in just a wealthy family’s home is too bland to be a stand alone piece of decor to represent the aesthetic. That’s why I go for the more over the top items inspired by the royal family

    I took one look at your hair which does not have unity at all and is basically an attempt to break free from constraints of nature and revel in the artificial. Then I got to the part when you were advising us to make sure that all the frames were the same gold and I couldnt watch anymore.
    Anyone can benefit from the good things about old money though not everyone has good taste. You inadvertantly are illustrating the pitfalls of old money which are too much rigidity, no origionality and a desire to be something you are not.
    There is a problem with nepo babies and it is basically a problem of inheriting alot you dont work for.The problem with never having to work for a living is that you are cut off detached and bored. Class and good taste is is being true to yourself first then seeking to understand Beauty.
