Just wanted to add a quick PSA about the use of candles in this video. I am in no way advising anyone to light candles in the way I choose to in my video. Candles were lit strictly for my shots and were blown out after. If you do choose to have candles in your home opt for flameless candles (this is what I use day to day) and if you do choose to have real candles, Please use with caution, do not leave candles unattended at anytime and keep them away from anything flammable.
I agree on the Greek art and busts, but I have found that Egyptian statues and papyrus art also looks really DA! If the statues are too gaudy with bright paint, I paint them black or dark brown and do a wash of teal to make them look like aged bronze. Great list and video!
omg Im so glad you said that because I I actually have some Egyptian stuff but I didn't mention it because I didn't know if it "technically" was DA haha but i think it is. I love that aged wash idea too, thats a good idea!

I've been into Dark Academia all my life but didn't know there was a name for it. I have more than half of the things you showed here. I love the aesthetics of it. To me it captures the warm, rich ambiance of a well loved and eclectic place, a since of history and /or interesting, useful items if only just for display. I have always collected these type of things since I was a teen and that was about 48 years ago. My friends at that time thought I was weird, but I kept right on collecting and have never tired of the treasures I have. I'm so glad the younger generation has come to appreciate this look and way of living. It truly does enrich your life!
Right!!! Same here!! I love that it’s so popular now because more people are admiring it, especially the younger generation which is awesome. Finally we feel cool hehe 🤎🕰
@Mpompadour, I think we have quite a bit in common! Styling my home in DA has required few changes as that's the kind of items I've enjoyed collecting for years. Not many understood my teenage room either, but I still have many of those treasures, such as Grandma's oil lamp, Dad's college typewriter and many beloved books, that fit into my DA farmhouse perfectly. @justlanchen, thanks for the ideas! My favorite new part of DA styling is the color palette. Deeper, more atmospheric colors, jewel tones, bronze, aged brass and old gold all create such a beautiful look. I really love your posts about DA.
I actually sew and I am obsessed with historical fashion (which is why I'm into DA), and I found that some of the "decor" in my space are actually vintage-looking sewing utensils, like vintage pins, fabric shears, vintage patterns, old photographs and vintage fashion pamphletes, and the awesome thing is that they are ALL functional to me! I also collect vintage jewelries to go with my vintage-ish style, so it's totally on brand. So maybe add on tip: if you're interested in something (sewing, drawing, writing, even stuff like collecting insects, rocks, and cooking! etc) try to find utensils that you need in vintage. Vintage scissors, vintage plates and glass, vintage vases for brushes, etc. Could be antique, could be vintage inspired. It adds to the vibe as well as being super functional! On the other hand, it adds even more personality to your room because it's filled with things you're interested in! Thank you for the video, i'll definitely add some to my decor wishlist!
Yes! No one else has ever mentioned this! I came to the same conclusion. I love to sew, love historical fashion, and thus I collect (and use) vintage sewing notions. Ooh, also displaying stacks or baskets full of vintage textiles is good. I have vintage lace in old jars as well, and of course my 1950s sewing machine has its own little table in the corner for show while I gather up the courage to use it.
Great list! I would include something like choose darker woods for furniture pieces -- even a side table or nightstand, you can easily thrift something and refinish it. Maybe add a Turkish- style rug or tapestry-patterned rug to hide any ugly beige carpeting.
Omg yes such good suggestions. I totally forgot to mention rugs and I even have one in my DA space too but yes that is a huge one. Thank you for sharing this!!🙏🏼🕯
i love this aesthetic so much. i've had the DA aesthetic for three years now and what i love about it (in terms of decor) is that it is quite affordable. my vintage suitcases, candle holders, brass objects, frames, book ends, my greek statue bust, and literally 98% of my books were all thrifted. in fact, i got a victorian style desk for 50 dollars at my local goodwill. it took time for me to collect all those items, you just have to have patience!!
it is so affordable and most of the vintage furniture is solid wood and much more heavy duty than any new items. It Sounds like you having everything on this list!!!🥰🥰
OMG!! I didn't know I was a Dark Academia person. I just like antiques and books, but after watching your video I realize I have 44 out of the 50 items you mention. Love your aesthetic!!!😍🔎📚📖🕯💡✒🖌⏳🕰
I'm lucky enough to have a room that is my library. Two desks, a couple of chairs and small tables, shelves and drawers and a "curiosity cabinet". All the other rooms I decorate in pseudo African and elephant themes for my wife. The library is mine. Books, gargoyles, candles, sections dedicated to minerals and fossils, statuettes of Medusa, Nike, Athena, Raven, Anubis and Bast. Green hood library lamps, and even a display dish and cup of actual uranium glass. The entire works of HPL and several works of Doyle, not to mention ....yeah it's a library, so a lot of books. It's my haven. Some guys have "man caves". I have a library and it is my sanctuary after a long day at work. Thank you for all your ideas and inspirations, I'm sure I'll be incorporating many of them in the future.
Loving these ideas. My study is dark wood, and, being a Harry Potter fan, I have a few wands, the rack and a love of old books. I do have an old unworking camera that I bought because it was like the one my parents had back in the 40s and 50s. Just purchased from the Etsy shop some of the postcards to frame. Always wanted a vintage typewriter (being a secretary for 35 years), but can't afford it, so thanks for the idea of the blueprint art. Found one for a typewriter from 1938 that I can frame. I have a candle snuffer from the old Partylite candle party days. I have a lantern. Guess I should shop my home before I do more purchasing.
This is an excellent and very helpful list! It's easy to look at pictures online or pinterest for reference, but having you list out items makes it much easier to bring in the vibe one piece at a time. I would love to find a greek bust and a fold-out vanity mirror would be a dream!
Our house has a proper grandfather clock that I think was originally from a great great grandfather who owned a public house, the base was removed to fit into a smaller terraced house of a great uncle and the glass has a crack in it from when one of those houses on the terrace was demolished and the vibrations cracked the glass. It'd be so neat to get it restored, a proper heavy tick tock from a 1800's grandfather clock perfectly fits the DA aesthetic.
I'm completely in love with DA aesthetics, but I'm not a big fan of Greek or Roman mythology, I prefer Nordic and Celtic, your video helped me a lot. several ideas in my mind right now❤❤❤
Some interesting ideas. Thank you for sharing them. I’m not always sure where the Dark Academia comes into play on some things watching a number of UA-cam videos. A lot of your suggestions my wife and I have accumulated over many years. I’ve always called it more a Museum of Natural History or Indiana Jones office look. I would suggest quality of an object over just the object. Only use objects that look substantial (of a higher quality) over something that might be found at a Spencer’s Gifts or discount store. If a quality version of something one wants can’t be found or isn’t in one’s budget, then don’t get something less. Wait. It will look better, last longer and one will be happier. Some other ideas to consider: A scarf with a pattern over a lampshade. Animal bones, especially skulls. Many a deer skull has been found in the woods along with various others. We have an alligator skull from New Orleans (do not bleach bones. It weakens them) Bird feathers. Note that there are laws against owning certain bird feathers. I think under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Bird’s nest also may be covered. Just be aware. Glass lab equipment (One can find interesting things like this at American Science and Surplus) Souvenir little metal buildings Old coins Old stamps An alternative to just putting book pages on a wall, is to put up a bulletin board and then pin them to that. The bulletin board can also have ribbon crisscrossed on it and things can be tucked in. A library card catalog. Storage nooks and crannies in general. Metal, wire baskets (Target) Metal, enameled vanity storage tray (Hearth and Hand Magnolia Target) Serving trays Ouija board Pocket watching hung from a crescent stand Beeswax candles (can make one’s own from kits like found on Townsend’s website.) Vintage photographs Vintage rotary phones (not the cheap reproductions, but old solid ones) Crystal bar glassware (on serving trays) Radio vacuum tubes (Also American Science and Surplus) Vintage/vintage style hats (Historical Emporium website. Village Hat Shop website) Some places to search for these things are at flea markets, antique malls, and architectural salvage yards. Anyway, hope this sparks some ideas. Quality over quantity.
omg these are marvelous ideas, I just pinned it so everyone can see! thank you for sharing! Also, before DA was popular I always referred to my style as adventure / swiss family robinson tree house. So happy to hear I'm not the only one who thinks this aesthetic is similar to that. I do hope that some day in the future "adventurecore" become a thing, it would be so cool to see but in the meantime dark academia works too!!
@@justlanchen Hope it helps people with their designs. Explorer Core is another label I use. I keep a running list of clothing and other items I have in my kit to keep track of those things. And other list. I’m a huge list maker. A pain to start, but once created, easy to maintain and useful. Thought of a few of other items: Doctor’s bag Mortar and pestle Army Surplus canvas bags Various kinds of apothecary bottles, and just bottles that take corks As mentioned previously, American Science and Surplus is a great place to get the lab ware, mortar and pestle, bottles, some military surplus, …. But it can be a rabbit hole. They also have many things that I would consider to be low quality, so be choosy.
I have been wanting an antique radio for years! Ive recently discovered how much DA suits me and started transforming my living space So far ive painted a dark green accent wall, created a portrait wall, bought a fireplace, added an antique reading lamp, and ordered black curtains. Excited to do more with this! Thank you for the ideas 💜🕯️✨
Thanks for the suggestions! My plan for a long time was that I'd be able to get my own space and decorate it once I was in Uni, but now I've realized I'm probably going to be living with my parents for *a while*, so I'm gonna do the best I can to make this space work now.
i appreciate the attention you put on function in this video! i no longer consider myself a minimalist but i do place importance on items that have a purpose on top of aesthetic value. thank you so much for offering such a comprehensive list. i was just thinking recently i wanted a vintage radio to listen to classical music on-- i think i'll get one now! :)
Love that you mentioned the chair to pull it all together - I have a corner in my bedroom right next to the bookshelf that was just absolutely lacking something, but I worked out that an arm chair, snuggly for reading, would be perfect. And by the gods, it is. I rarely use it as there is not enough light in that corner and it gets chilly, but the cat sleeps on it all the time. 11/10 purchase, no regrets, and I got it from a charity shop too 🥰 thanks for all the ideas, although it's June I am dreaming of dark academia decor 😍
I was so happy to receive a Brother Deluxe 220 typewriter for Christmas a few years back. I had been wanting one for years, so when I ripped that paper and saw my typewriter I was so ecstatic. Best gift I have ever gotten. And yes it works and it even had two spare ink cartridges!
@@justlanchen Yes I love it!! 😍 I think the brand is called "Aradia", and it's from Finland, (not sure the year but looks veryyy old) It was so crazy to find this in a country of South america 😋🤩 and yours??
@@Lourdes.Kassandra. that is awesome!! I’m going to look it up. I found “Royal Albert” for $10 each at a flea market but now it’s the main brand I look for because it a the only one I really know 😂😂
Just starting to get into this as a decor style. Where was this aesthetic in my youth? Got my name all over it, so I could've use this inso years ago! BTY, you have some of my favorite books/authors! ~ Janet Faye Elizabeth
Haha right!! I’ve always been into Harry Potter decor which is so similar to this aesthetic, it’s literally perfect. I’m just happy more people are on board with it
I never knew what to call the way I decorated my house but I already have so many of these things displayed like this. Guess I loved this style before I knew what it was called. I have these two glass doors cabinets that I have alot of clear and amber glass that I feel like fits the vibe as well.
Same!!! I always thought it was like “adventure vintage” haha but now that it officially has a name and is becoming so popular it’s cool to connect with others who love this aesthetic too! That definitely fits the vibe!! That sounds beautiful 😻
This was an amazing list!!! Another idea might also be a weather vane, a Galileo Glass Globe Barometer, or old maps. I don't think you mentioned these things but I might have just missed that because I was tending to my livestock. (I own a mini farm: mini horses, dwarf goats, lionhead rabbits, hedgehogs, etc.)
@MaritaDeLaPenaDTG: Great ideas, and I would add, a sundial! I would love so many animals and have had most of yours at one time. What fun (though also responsibility)!
Great ideas. You've made me want to actually convert my room instead of just thinking about it. I love the trifold out mirrors. Can't find them anywhere for less than a fortune. I can find smaller ones, but in my mind DA is oversized, from the idea of antiquarian days. I love the ornate hand mirrors as well, looking for that one and a magnifying glass. For those who don't want real bugs up on their walls in a collection, saw one DIY who actually printed out HD images of butterflies, cut them out and pinned those in a shadowbox. I have framed maps and diagrams from Lord of the Rings, the Hobbit and Percy Jackson, all printed out on darkened paper.
omg do it! it really doesn't have to cost a lot if you look in the right places. Have you checked Facebook market place, offer up or craigslist? If you are in North America these are good spots! Thats where I have been finding most of my items. I got my vintage chair for $10 on offer up! such a steal 😭😭 I jut checked market place and found a trifold for $40, you can always negotiate as well. ALSO, such a good DIY, never even thought of that but that would be super cool to do. Thanks for sharing all your awesome ideas :)
I love the DA vibe! A quick side note, a “candlestick” is a candle holder, a long candle is just a candle or a taper. The book pages taped to the wall seem a bit off. Maybe frame them? I recommend you keep reading and expand your world!
I realize that I've been into this without knowing it. To me it is also a bit of the transitional style and the almost forgotten origin of shabby chic. I already got many of this decor pieces and I've always been into vintage and old school, books, classic literature etc.
I have been transitioning my tiny home to a dark academia/light academia blend.... All with thrifted & second hand items. My furniture (2 high backed cream armchairs and a beige loveseat) were bought off Facebook. I use a vintage black trunk with gold details for a coffee table (and extra storage). I have a vintage sewing machine table (machine is still in it & works!) with matching stool as a work space. I have a thrifted electric fireplace, thrifted crochet throws, lots of old books, candles and plants spread around the room. Yesterday I was at a garage sale and came home with a "tempest fugit" chime wall clock, vintage tatting pieces, a large woven floor basket, a vintage round folding travel alarm (1960's), a gold filigree book holder and a few smaller pieces (including several hardbacked books from the 1920's & 30's) - all for $30! 💗 I crocheted a few floor rugs out of old sheets. I have 2 vintage art pieces I thrifted last year and the most amazing lamp I found someone throwing away!! Other items in my space that I've had for years.... 1920's radio (works), set of oil lamps, vintage tea service and several vintage stringed instruments. The space is really coming together....it just took time & patience (but not a lot of money).
I'm in process of creating this DA space in my basement. I'm doing the classic DA with an Indiana jones inspired explorer twist. With crates from the india trading co.. I previously made a realistic full size partially unwrapped mummy in a sarcophagus. With weathered maps and all the paraphernalia. I'm having a blast creating this aesthetic. Thanks for the ideas I hadn't thought of.
Tip about Greek busts: you can get them as candles nowadays as well and if you wake up one day not liking it anymore you can simply burn it (and not having to worry about how to get rid of it) ;)
Even a bottle of Quink ink! I’ve used that for years, I still do on the occasions I use a fountain pen😊 I just like the flow when you write. Have you seen 18th century timed candle automatic candle snuffers!? They fit to the candle at a particular height and as the candle burns down it progressively closes a brass hood over the candle, snuffing it out. Some are quite ornate, and to be honest quite handy too!
I'm big into ttrpgs, so I'm combining the DA art with dnd and Cthulhu art, but kept in 1900s art style. I am also a big fan of Edward Hopper and have several prints of his on my walls. Though he's not typical DA, there's still a...longing in his work that resonates with me in the same way DA does. Hope this makes sense
I love these decor ideas. My only problem is I can't rlly go out much (cos covid cases at my place are HIGH) and the delivery in online stores are quite long and the stuff are expensive (Like at least 100 dollars for all the things I'm trying to buy, which is a lot since I'm trying to save money) . I'm slowly making my way thru this lifestyle and getting more accustomed to it Thx for the inspo and I luv ur vids!
facebook market place is a great place to look for these items or even offer up but I personally find the best deals on facebook!!! hopefully you can thrift some stuff soon or buy new!
I think you were thinking of sealing wax and oil lamps. Also, when you said Piano lamp I suddenly realized my upright piano was probably a Dark Academia item I hadn't even thought of. And then I realized other instruments like violins, harps, and brass bells were a good fit as well. The clock reminded me that I also have a metronome and the stopwatch reminded me of pocket watches.
Oh my gosh it is an oil lamp! I tried finding that for hours and I could not figure out the name😅 thank you so much for sharing that! Yes those are all indeed dark Academia, they fit with the aesthetics so well
Excellent ideas. I especially like the idea of the blueprint art. I see blueprints in old books headed for the trash. A great way to salvage those prints and frame them for Dark Academia. PS. I'm sure you've been told this before, but you look like the actress, Wynona Ryder.
A couple of thoughts: Typewriters -- The problem with having a "usable" typewriter is finding ribbons for one. That is the reason I got rid of my typewriter (an ancient LC Smith & Corona upright with no "1" key -- I had to use the lower case "l"). Had I held onto it, it would have been very D.A. What about sea shells? In the right parts of a sea shore, they are available free for the effort of collecting. (There used to be a lot more places you could collect sea shells, but the good places for collecting have been thinned out.) But many souvenir shops at the beach offer selections of shells, usually priced up to a couple dollars per shell. A last thought: pencil boxes. All the ones I've found are definitely not dark academic (one I have is a Lego pencil box), but it's an item to look for when thrifting...
GREAT video, heaps of original and creative ideas. Really well presented and well paced as well. I love your personal style too...the make up, the hair, the glasses...it is a really lovely look. Thank you for posting 😊🖤
thank you so much for this. I have been waiting for someone to do this for so long! I'm going to actually decorate my room soon and I'll probably going to buy some things you recommended,, thank you so much again !!
My room is currently giving, dark academic went to university and is now also kinda a hippie. Surprisingly the styles mesh pretty well together if you do it right.
Binge watching 🎉 your vids! Went to goodwill and my room gives off a cottage core and academia vibe. But to be honest, seeing your light academia vid, now I wanna add more stuff lol
Quick FYI (from a vintage seller): a *candlestick* is actually a holder for a candle; a tall, thin candle is a taper candle. Confusing, right?! I think of it as a sort of Victorian slang: a "candle-stick" is the thing you stick the candle in. 🕯 Love this video and all your suggestions. Such a beautiful aesthetic.
Oh thank you for letting me know the proper name! makes it much easier to look up online. I swear I dont know the names of half the things I talk about 😅😅
This makes sense, as the old holders (usually brass with a finger loop or curve) would have a small pin or protrusion in the middle that the candle is “stuck” on, so that it doesn’t fall off.
May I suggest the glass cloche/bell jar as an additional item that will also provide dust free storage? I keep my mother and grandmother’s Birthday Books in a cheese bell, and a wooden object that belonged to my grandfather in a large cloche.
I actually found a wooden bunkbed ladder in my alley, and though I don't need it for my bookshelves and it's only 4 ft tall, I have it leaning on one shelf unit and have folded two throws over different rungs
love your videos. I read some time ago it's not a good idea to store alcohol in crystal containers. Over time lead from the crystal will leach into the alcohol.
Omg you’re right! I saw another UA-camr say that’s where she got hers from for cheap but now I’m confused because you are right!! Who knew a ladder could be so much 😭😭 I am determined to find a good priced one for all of us!
Thanks for the stream. Only thing that did not like was the book pages just stuck on the wall. It looks a bit silly. Like having sticky notes everywhere. But...those same pages framed or something would look different.
i'm so happy with my antiques, i proudly posses a 19th century clock that used to actually work when i got it for 25 bucks, i have a typewriter, some copper candle holders, vintage medication bottles, a collection of some fine european beer bottles, and early 20th century pictures. oh and i also have a home altar, mostly filled with antique religious items, and i also have some random knicknacks filled with mystery laying around. some ppl call me a hoarder but i'd rather call it a cabinet of curiosities yay
Great video! I've been dipping my toe into looking into the dark academia aesthetic and I am really intrigued. I think I'll try the dried flower and drawings craft!
Love the comment about the "traditional way to light a candle using a lighter". That did make me laugh! In my youth this style was called Goth. But then I am old! Nice video though.
What colour should I paint my wall? Not gonna do black, yellow, orange, purple, or pink. One wall is bright red now, and the others and my ceiling are white. And say I'd do blue for example, or green, what colour code? Thanks Also, how to fit all of these things in a very small room? I have a book closet but it's already filled, I already have a second row of books in front of the first one!
Are you covering the red wall or keeping it? A color I personally like called “Mouse Is Back” has a great moody tone for this type of space. If you didn’t want to go that dark though you could always do a beige or if you want to get even more create with it you could find a wallpaper or a piece of cloth with a vintage pattern. I just found a king size bed sheet that was super old and vintage and I’m going to be pinning it up by the corners of my room. Great way to change a wall without damage and too much effort and if you don’t like if you could remove it. If you check out my Dark academia room makeover video maybe it’ll help you get a sense of how I fit everything into my space, my room is very small too. If you want all the trinkets and things you’ll definitely need a desk to display/use them and more shelves throughout your room.
@@justlanchen I'm covering the red wall, just looked up the colour you were talking about and it looks cool! Might do all of my walls that colour, and the one accent wall (the now red one) a bit darker! OMG thank you so much! And yes shelves haha but the only place I have is over my bed and my parents won't allow me to put them there since they might fall on me whilst I'm sleeping. F hahaha but thanks so much!!! I love the colour and all of the items in this vid!
@@noahapollo an accent wall would be really cool, that’s exactly what I’m planning on doing too! I totally understand the shelves over the bed, I used to have one and it really freaked me out!! You could always do the DIY portrait wall like the one in my DA bedroom makeover video too if you didn’t want to do the wallpaper. That technically is like an accent wall and you are displaying lots of DA things🥰
@@justlanchen I had a convo with my parents yesterday, if I repaint my room I can make my accent wall mouse's back and the rest a bit lighter! And I'd love to do that but nothing sticks to the paint. But the new colours will be awesome!
Where are you thrift store shopping? The prices are amazing! I live in greater Vancouver, BC and many of the thrift stores charge almost as much as getting the items new!
I’ve also found a bunch of items on the sides of roads, sometimes people post free items on Craigslist or FB marketplace as well. Once I found a mint Victorian bed frames made of solid wood, it ended up not fitting for my bed but it was just sitting on the side of the road. Facebook market place is great too! Omg I’ve found such good items on there

OMG this sounds like my dream!! wow! how many books do you think you have?🥰
Loving these ideas.
I linked the bust below from Amazon 🥰🥰 it’s my favorite purchase out of everything I own!!
I'm completely in love with DA aesthetics, but I'm not a big fan of Greek or Roman mythology, I prefer Nordic and Celtic, your video helped me a lot. several ideas in my mind right now❤❤❤
Loved your video. A crystal alcohol container is called a decanter, in case anyone wants to do a search on it to buy.
thanks so much for sharing!! I had no idea that was the correct name 😅 I also linked it in the description as well 💕
@justlanchen but you should really not store your liquor in crystal decanters...the lead in the crystal is toxic and leaches into the alcohol
Some other ideas to consider:
A scarf with a pattern over a lampshade.
Animal bones, especially skulls. Many a deer skull has been found in the woods along with various others. We have an alligator skull from New Orleans (do not bleach bones. It weakens them)
Bird feathers. Note that there are laws against owning certain bird feathers. I think under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Bird’s nest also may be covered. Just be aware.
Glass lab equipment (One can find interesting things like this at American Science and Surplus)
Souvenir little metal buildings
Old coins
Old stamps
An alternative to just putting book pages on a wall, is to put up a bulletin board and then pin them to that. The bulletin board can also have ribbon crisscrossed on it and things can be tucked in.
A library card catalog. Storage nooks and crannies in general.
Metal, wire baskets (Target)
Metal, enameled vanity storage tray (Hearth and Hand Magnolia Target)
Serving trays
Ouija board
Pocket watching hung from a crescent stand
Beeswax candles (can make one’s own from kits like found on Townsend’s website.)
Vintage photographs
Vintage rotary phones (not the cheap reproductions, but old solid ones)
Crystal bar glassware (on serving trays)
Radio vacuum tubes (Also American Science and Surplus)
Vintage/vintage style hats (Historical Emporium website. Village Hat Shop website)
Some places to search for these things are at flea markets, antique malls, and architectural salvage yards.
Thought of a few of other items:
Doctor’s bag
Mortar and pestle
Army Surplus canvas bags
Various kinds of apothecary bottles, and just bottles that take corks
As mentioned previously, American Science and Surplus is a great place to get the lab ware, mortar and pestle, bottles, some military surplus, …. But it can be a rabbit hole. They also have many things that I would consider to be low quality, so be choosy.
The music in the background was actually so good I was holding my breath the entire time really living in the dark academia
Thank you 🥺🥺🤍🤍🤍 I actually uploaded the playlist to my channel too
I have been wanting an antique radio for years! Ive recently discovered how much DA suits me and started transforming my living space
So far ive painted a dark green accent wall, created a portrait wall, bought a fireplace, added an antique reading lamp, and ordered black curtains. Excited to do more with this! Thank you for the ideas 💜🕯️✨
Thanks for the suggestions! My plan for a long time was that I'd be able to get my own space and decorate it once I was in Uni, but now I've realized I'm probably going to be living with my parents for *a while*, so I'm gonna do the best I can to make this space work now.
oh dooo it! Honestly you dont have to do much to decorate. You could just have a ton of books, a linen bedding and a vintage lamp and BAM! DA haha
i appreciate the attention you put on function in this video! i no longer consider myself a minimalist but i do place importance on items that have a purpose on top of aesthetic value. thank you so much for offering such a comprehensive list. i was just thinking recently i wanted a vintage radio to listen to classical music on-- i think i'll get one now!
NO WAY! that is so amazing. I hope I find a cheaper one that works one day, it would be such an experience to write on one
I'm obsessed with this aesthetic 😍
I have a thrifted tea set too, that I use for tasseomancy
You're so beautiful! Loved this video! 🥰🖤
youre so kind, thank you!! 🥰🙈 what brand tea set did you thrift? do you love it??
@@justlanchen Yes I love it!! 😍 I think the brand is called "Aradia", and it's from Finland, (not sure the year but looks veryyy old) It was so crazy to find this in a country of South america 😋🤩 and yours??
@@Lourdes.Kassandra. that is awesome!! I’m going to look it up. I found “Royal Albert” for $10 each at a flea market but now it’s the main brand I look for because it a the only one I really know 😂😂
@@justlanchen lol 😄 I hope you find more goodies like those 😍
Just starting to get into this as a decor style.
I’m just happy more people are on board with it
OMG, all these years I tried to understand why I like such stuff, today i understood DA is my style... lovely video by the way
i'm obsessed for dark | light academia...! 🙈🙈
That chair is beautiful, what a steal
Love the thumbnail
Thank you!! It took me forever to make😅
This was an amazing list!!!
These are amazing, I don’t think I mentioned them!!! Thank you for sharing these wonderful ideas 🥰
I got my vintage chair for $10 on offer up! such a steal 😭😭
I jut checked market place and found a trifold for $40, you can always negotiate as well.
ALSO, such a good DIY, never even thought of that but that would be super cool to do. Thanks for sharing all your awesome ideas :)
@@justlanchen - No I haven't checked! $40!!! Yay!
the thumbnail for this video is so. good.
omg thank you! it took me an hour to make 😅😅
I love the DA vibe! A quick side note, a “candlestick” is a candle holder, a long candle is just a candle or a taper. The book pages taped to the wall seem a bit off. Maybe frame them? I recommend you keep reading and expand your world!
omg what! haha I literally had no idea. smh. thank you for letting me know
Got a bit scared when your candle was so close to all that paper :-D
I really liked the video, needs way more views!
🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈
I realize that I've been into this without knowing it. To me it is also a bit of the transitional style and the almost forgotten origin of shabby chic. I already got many of this decor pieces and I've always been into vintage and old school, books, classic literature etc.
that is awesome!! you're officially the coolest and you didn't even know it 🥰🥰
This is my first time hearing about DK. I have most of the things you mentioned but always called it "vintage witchy" ☺
I always called it Harry Potter!! haha 😂
I am loving all of these ideas and references truly a perfect how to guide for first time Dark Academics! lovely video great work!
Thank you so much love
This is a fabulous video with wonderful tip's.
I would add a drawing board, T square and cloche's to this list, too.😊
I have been transitioning my tiny home to a dark academia/light academia blend....
I crocheted a few floor rugs out of old sheets.
Tip about Greek busts: you can get them as candles nowadays as well and if you wake up one day not liking it anymore you can simply burn it (and not having to worry about how to get rid of it) ;)
omg yes! I forgot to mention those!! I love them, they are a bot expensive at lease the ones I've seen but soooooo freaking cool!!
Ty so much for this video ❤️ my room is already full but I like to daydream about how ill decorate my house when i am finally able to get one
You really inspired me to do dark academia decor, thank you for your videos Lanchen ✨
Omg I'm so happy to hear that!! thanks for watching 🥰🥰🥰
Also old phones i have one in black and it looks so good
Omg yes!! I totally should’ve said that. Definitely old phones. This is a great one
Yes those are all indeed dark Academia, they fit with the aesthetics so well
Always love your intro! ❤️❤️
Thank you!!!
Excellent ideas. I especially like the idea of the blueprint art. I see blueprints in old books headed for the trash. A great way to salvage those prints and frame them for Dark Academia. PS. I'm sure you've been told this before, but you look like the actress, Wynona Ryder.
Thats actually such a smart idea!!! Yes I have heard of that but I dont see it at all 😅 but thank you!!
ong thank you so much, i haven’t been able to find ideas anywhere. You really helped thanks :)
So happy you found this helpful!!🤎
good ideas for Steampunk, too. Thanks for sharing
Omg yea great for steampunk!
That's were I started from.... I got into steampunk in 2008 and have an amazing collection of corsets!
A couple of thoughts:
Typewriters -- The problem with having a "usable" typewriter is finding ribbons for one.
Thank you for all the positive feedback 🥺🥺🤍🤍 I really appreciate it and I’m so happy that you liked the video
thank you so much for this. I have been waiting for someone to do this for so long! I'm going to actually decorate my room soon and I'll probably going to buy some things you recommended,, thank you so much again !!
Of course!! Glad you found this helpful!
I didn't know my style had a name...
I have been collecting all this stuff for years...❤❤❤❤
My room is currently giving, dark academic went to university and is now also kinda a hippie. Surprisingly the styles mesh pretty well together if you do it right.
This bring my Victorian antique madness great joy, love the video, you got my like and my subscrition to you Madame.
🥰🥰🥰 youre so kind, thanks for being here!!
Binge watching 🎉 your vids! Went to goodwill and my room gives off a cottage core and academia vibe. But to be honest, seeing your light academia vid, now I wanna add more stuff lol
🥹🥹🤍🤍 omg hiii and thank you for checking them out. I love light academia so much, it’s such a good mix
I'll be trying these ideas! Thank you so much :)
Thank you very much for all the tips. Very helpful.
My pleasure!
I like your video! And your vibe!
Thank you for the detailed explanation.
omg thank you!!!! also so happy you found this helpful 🥰🥰🥰
I have been looking for something like this, a victorian chair is perfect! what a cool idea
Glad you like it!
I really enjoyed this video and reading the comments
May I suggest the glass cloche/bell jar as an additional item that will also provide dust free storage?
I keep my mother and grandmother’s Birthday Books in a cheese bell, and a wooden object that belonged to my grandfather in a large cloche.
Wow, awesome video, got a lot of ideas, thank you😘
Yay so happy to hear that🥰✨🥰
I actually found a wooden bunkbed ladder in my alley, and though I don't need it for my bookshelves and it's only 4 ft tall, I have it leaning on one shelf unit and have folded two throws over different rungs
i have very old books from my great grandma in a stack and a bunch of coffee stained envelopes
omg i love that!!!!
Just stumbled onto this and am so excited to learn more -thanks for the suggestions!
🥰🥰🥰 so happy you found it helpful love!
Best dark academia UA-cam channel!
Omg you’re so nice🥺🤎
love your videos. I read some time ago it's not a good idea to store alcohol in crystal containers. Over time lead from the crystal will leach into the alcohol.
I love your suggestions. FYI I looked up the target bookcase with a ladder and it’s only the ladder that is 399. It doesn’t include the bookcases.
Omg you’re right! I saw another UA-camr say that’s where she got hers from for cheap but now I’m confused because you are right!! Who knew a ladder could be so much 😭😭 I am determined to find a good priced one for all of us!
typewriter are so rare to found!
Thanks for the stream. Only thing that did not like was the book pages just stuck on the wall. It looks a bit silly. Like having sticky notes everywhere. But...those same pages framed or something would look different.
I didn't all the fun n funky old stuff I love had a name DA Thanks for the great video
I love these ideas! But also, you look like Winona Ryder.
That is seriously the nicest compliment 🥹
Amazing ideas an vintage radio is also a great place to keep a speaker or an Alexa that you don't want to look at
i'm so happy with my antiques, i proudly posses a 19th century clock that used to actually work when i got it for 25 bucks, i have a typewriter, some copper candle holders, vintage medication bottles, a collection of some fine european beer bottles, and early 20th century pictures. oh and i also have a home altar, mostly filled with antique religious items, and i also have some random knicknacks filled with mystery laying around. some ppl call me a hoarder but i'd rather call it a cabinet of curiosities yay
I enjoyed this video, thank you for sharing these ideas..
Thanks for watching🥰
I think silver art coins could be on the list. Ones that are of old paintings or vintage cameos.
Well you are gorgeous! Your skin is beautiful!😍
🥺🥺🤍 thank you, you’re too kind
Excellent list! Thank you! Super helpful ❤😊
What is that cello piece in the beginning? I love it!
Your videos are so aesthetic 😍 I just opened a small dark academia etsy shop (Cosette Whitlock) and your outfits are a great inspiration to me✒️✨
Thank you so much I’m really happy to hear that you like them! No way I’m definitely going to check it out, congratulations on your shop :-)
Love your videos! I don't buy stuff at Amazon but I hope to find it at other places!
Antique shops are the best. You will find everything there and more!
Oh my goodness. Your intro music is amazing. What's the name of the music?

@@justlanchen Thank you. I love it❤
you look so charming 🙂 i adore your vibe
youre so kind 🥺
Great video! I've been dipping my toe into looking into the dark academia aesthetic and I am really intrigued. I think I'll try the dried flower and drawings craft!
Omg yes do it!! You won’t regret it I promise
Add an opulent cozy rug in rich colors.
Love the comment about the "traditional way to light a candle using a lighter". That did make me laugh! In my youth this style was called Goth. But then I am old!
Nice video though.
Hahahhaha yea I really need to get some matches for videos smh haha
Candlesticks hold candles. 😉
whoops candle tapers!
What colour should I paint my wall? Not gonna do black, yellow, orange, purple, or pink. One wall is bright red now, and the others and my ceiling are white.
And say I'd do blue for example, or green, what colour code?
Thanks
Also, how to fit all of these things in a very small room?
Hope that helped!!
But the new colours will be awesome!
hey there! new subbie here! great video! i like DA as well... although my style is very eclectic! thanks for sharing! xox
I’ve been looking online for a candle holder just like that!! Did you thrift it?
Yes!!
Great video thank you ❤
I already owns most of the ones here, but didn't know they were Dark Academia type until now
Where are you thrift store shopping? The prices are amazing! I live in greater Vancouver, BC and many of the thrift stores charge almost as much as getting the items new!
Oh anywhere and everywhere!! flea markets, goodwill, deseret industries, yard sales!! I would try yard sales!
Omg I’ve found such good items on there
@justlanchen sorry for the late reply...I should check Facebook market place :).
Great. thank you
In a bedroom what fabric would you use on your bed and drapes ?
