I sew nearly everything that I wear. I rarely buy manufactured items for wear or the house.. I didn't know that Janome made a treadle sewing machine. I've been wanting one for our new sustainable house on the homestead. THANK YOU!
I have a 1915 Singer treadle that I would not trade for any money. It sews through anything and even without having any of the fancy bits, I've made some great things with it. Just found your channel today and am enjoying what I've seen so far.
Like always Heidi, you always have good information for people what like Treadle Machines. Heidi what a blessing that you come back on to answer question for people.😀
I finally got my grandmother's treadle machine shipped to me this Spring. She had an 1887 New Home. It cost $1,100 to ship from WA to TX, but I'm so thankful I finally got it after 25 years of her passing. I never had the money or space for the machine until recently. I was able to get a belt on Etsy from The Treadle Lady, along with her book. There was only one spool with the machine but it has the shuttle. Now I need to learn how to use it.
I inherited some sewing manuals from my Great-grandmother. Singer recommended using two feet-- one foot higher on the treadle than the other to operate the machine. Switching feet between high and low reduces fatigue
I finally gave my treadle to my daughter. Ohhowi miss it! But it was the first machine she learned to sew on. I have many things I made from it when we lived offgrid. S
I have my maternal grandmother's treadle machine and cabinet, and my paternal great-grandmother's Singer treadle machine. I was able to find a Singer cabinet for it for $50. I also have my paternal grandmother's vintage Vigorelli that she won from a radio contest :) Then there's the vintage blue Kenmore I picked up at a thrift store, a vintage pink machine (forgot the brand) from the same thrift store, and most recently another vintage machine in a cabinet that uses a knee pedal. That one I picked up off the side of the road!
Hello Heidi! I love your treadle janome! I didn’t realize they made a treadle with a zig zag…so cool!! I used to sell machines 35 years ago and janome (sounds like janomee) was one of them, such a solid machine❤
Last weekend I bought a working late 40s Singer treadle sewing machine in great shape from a thrift store in the nearest big city. It was the spitting image of my mother's machine - although she had hers converted to electric. But my fingers had that muscle memory of how to thread it and use it and it was such a treat! What a lot of great memories. I do hand stitching mostly, but I figured this would be great in a pinch and also a great barter item with the local Amish if I ever needed to.
I have had the opportunity to buy a treadle sewing machine for $100. I decided hand sewing would be better because food is more important now. That doesn't mean another opportunity may not come along. I don't do well sewing anyway but it is something I'm working on learning by hand. Slow steps ... I can't take a machine with me anyway! Blessings and great Info 🥰
I don't have electricity as of yet so this treadle machine would be ideal for my situation and using old clothes and used cloth to make a quilt is a wonderful idea thanks! God is good. Always!
I used to "rock" my dolls on my Grandma's treadle sewing machine...now you've made me want my own...Lord only knows what happened to her machine, wished I had it...blessings ❤️
Thanks for the heads up on the new Janome. I've been longing for one for over 3 years, but Janome quit making them during the pandemic. I figured they would never make them again. I was very excited to see your link took me to "in stock" machines. I immediately ordered one. So grateful to you!
A few weeks ago I saw an antique treadle machine for sale at a Restore Habitat For Humanity store and after watching this video I totally regret I didn’t purchase it. Thank you for the video.😊
I got my Janome treadle machine three years ago. One of my best ever purchases. I taught four grandchildren to use it during lock down. It makes heavy duty sewing so easy. I can sew as well and fast on it as I can on electric. I find it very relaxing to use it actually.
I have two old treadle machines my Grandmothers had two different kinds and the work great I love them I would not have any other kind thanks for sharing and God’s blessings for you and all your family
Thank you for this video. I've always wanted a treadle sewing machine. My aunt taught me how to sew when it was 8yrs old and now in 64yrs old. I have sewed all those years all kinds of items.
I have the 712T, and I found the treadle cabinet at a local auction. The singer machine in it had been canibilized for parts so I only paid $25 for it! My babysitter taught me to sew on a treadle machine when I was 11, and I have always wanted one for myself.
Blessings Heidi! I was finally able to purchase a Janome 712T through Lehman’s. It arrived a couple of weeks ago. In the middle of cataract surgery, so will have to wait to place it in my Singer cabinet. I also have an antique Singer that I converted to a hand crank. I like the fact that the Janome has the zig zag stitches. Thank you so much for your wonderful videos. You are and have always been such a blessing. Sending hugs and much love from east Texas to you and your beautiful family.🥰
I never knew janome had a treadle version. I do know that the singer 237 (straight and zig-zag stitch, circa 1960’s - 1970’s, made in Italy) can be easily treadled. I have one, just looking for a deal on a treadle table. Nice video.
I have a Singer treadle machine and I found the zjg zag attachment for it. It looks somewhat like a old buttonholer attachment and also come with 3 other designs. Works great. Also as you mentioned I love the large wheel on this machine. I believe it's a 66 model.
I have an old Singer treadle, built in 1921 in Scotland. A friends Mum used to work in that factory at that time. Her Mum's name was Irene. In honour of her I named by girl Irene. She has the same decal on her as the one you showed in the video, just before you mentioned wanting an antique one. Irene only does straight stitch. I would love her to have a zig zag option. I used WD40 on Irene. I love using her on heavier fabrics as Irene just copes with thicker fabrics. I loved the video.
I never use anything other than straight and zigzag as well. EXCEPT--I also use the one that I call a 3-step zigzag. Oh my goodness, I love that stitch! I use it all the time. It would be worth a try sometime.
Love my 712t and thinking of selling my nearly new bernina and getting a second (have daughters sewing too). You can soak the belt and dry next to heat to shrink it (same with leather belts for hubby) also a little leather oil when you live in the desert like I do. GVS (an amish/mennonite mail order supplier, I can provide a number to order catalog if interested) also now sells RUBBER belts for them.
here in South Africa we have daily scheduled power outages (and they stick to the schedule 'creatively') - so I'm keeping my eye's open for a treadle machine. My mom used to have one (a Necchi) many years ago, it was set in a sewing cabinet. When I was little I'd sit on the peddle and "drive" the bottom wheel, always falling out in the down position
I have a vintage Singer treadle machine with the bullet style bobbin. It needs a belt, which I can make, I just never got around to it. I haven’t really sewn much since I was a teenager. (a really long time ago!). 😅 I also have 2 electric machines because I was going to start sewing, but other than trying to make a quilt square, I still haven’t used them. Many Blessings!!
I was so blessed to be given a treadle sewing machine in the cabinet and I love it. Believe it or not, folks, it's easy to repair on your own - far easier than any modern electric machine. I love the control I have over it. It only does a straight stitch, but I have found attachments such as the walking foot and other pieces (modern feet) that fit this machine. Because more women are using treadle machines now, I believe Singer and other companies know that they need to step up and make the parts. I was just given a 1941 electrified Singer that looks almost exactly the same as my treadle but with a motor and a light and it is in a cabinet. If you find one, I highly, highly recommend getting a treadle. These old iron ones are like a brick house. They can handle the jobs - you just have to clean and oil them regularly and they'll keep going. I rarely use my electric machine - only to make button holes and zig zag stitch - but it's rare and I want to find a way around all of that so I can get rid of it completely. I have a serger - never use it and I have several other electric machines I never use. I have kept them to give to other women who want to learn to sew and I do and I teach them how to sew. I found a little child's electric sewing machine at a yard sale today for $3.00. I bought an electric machine years ago at a yard sale for $20.00. You just have to keep your eyes open.
I have a 1940 Singer that is not a treadle, but a real workhorse. It was my only machine for many years. They are built to last. Unfortunately, they only do straight stitches. When my Mom passed away a few years ago I got her newer machine that has all of the stitches. I find myself using it all the time now, but not sure how long it will last. I agree with you that the zigzag is important because I too use it almost exclusively. Thanks for sharing about this treadle machine. I can see that it would be a great replacement for my Mom’s machine.
I've always disliked sewing, until I got this machine. The noise of the electric machine drove me mad. The sound of the treadle machine is soft, rhythmic and soothing. And it sews better than any other machine I've used.
Thank you Heidi!🙂 Though electric, I've got a Janome 521. I agree that it's the next best machine I've ever had. I started sewing when I was about 15 and 70's coming up in a hurry. My first and best machine was a White. It was a workhorse but only had straight and zig-zag. Found out that fancier doesn't necessarily correlate to better. 😉 I've been through a few machines too.☺️ Love and blessings!💜
Thanks to you, as I told you, I found I love handsewing. It calms me somehow. The problem I had was that my finger started hurting, and I could not get used to a metal thimble. I found some people online that make their own leather thimbles, and I now made my own. You only need a scrap of leather. I made mine down to the middle of my finger, from a (little) piece of soft leather, that I kept from an old leather jacket that was all the way worn out, though the leather was still good. It works excelent! Just sharing for those that have same problem. I hope you are doing fine, Heidi, and that there are no bad things going on. Much love to you! Ps. I am trying to make a pocket in my skirt... And I looked for your machine over time several times, it was not available anymore. I won't buy one anymore now, since handsewing is working fine for me. I don't sew for tons of people.
Wow ur costumes look amazing❤️ I think we all would love to see more of ur dance & costume days😊 I just know I wish I had video of my time w/dancing & costuming but we didn’t all have the great cameras we do now on our phones. They were very grainy & not great at the time…….. Do u have any videos u can share w/us all?
Thanks for these videos. I just bought an electric machine, but treadles are interesting to me. My aunt and someone else had a Singer treadle. It was pretty much the gold standard. There's a video on making a universal treadle base. Maybe it'll fit your table.
I was thinking of putting a more modern machine in my treadle stand. But the one id want to, doesn't have pulley track on hand wheel. I have another, but 'd like to have more abilties.
Hello, Heidi. Many years ago, I was gifted an Elias Howe Jr. treadle machine…circa mid-1800’s. I’m still trying to find a shuttle for it. Looked everywhere & will have to have one custom made. I would love to be able to use it! 🙂👍
Heidi, do you have a book on all you extracts? Or your herbs ' what to take and so on? I dont have f.b. or other!. Appreciate so very much the information you share. Karen
I just got one of these today. I'm a long-time treadler and have many, many antique & vintage treadle machines. All of my old girls treadle so easily and smoothly. This Janome seems very stiff by comparison. Have you found your 712T to be a bit stiff compared to the great old treadle machines?? Do they start out pretty stiff when new and get easier to run over time?? I've been treadling for over 40 years, so am quite use to using a treadle machine. I have to say, I'm disappointed in how stiff this Janome is on its first day with me. It's a new one, so I opened it up and oiled it well and made sure nothing obvious was bogging it down. It sews just fine with a nice stitch, but way too hard to treadle. I noticed in one of your videos you appear to be working pretty hard while treadling, so maybe this is normal for these machines?? Thanks!
Thanks for the quick reply!! When I was oiling this one, I noticed some sticky white grease in a number of places. I think that may be what's hanging it up. Hopefully, continuing to oil it will loosen it up.
Do you think the singer treadle cabinets may be what the janome fits. I bought the machine and found an elgin cabinet for $40. The hinges on the janome do not fit. So we are still looking for a cabinet. Has anyone tried any other brand of cabinet. Thank you for your videos
I have a vintage treadle machine and I would definitely recommend! Make sure your treadle works on your table and that the machine has a bobbin shuttle, all it’s parts and isn’t just completely worn out. You should be able to use it and pass it to your children!! (I have a machine like Heidi’s as well and it has reverse and zig zag.)
@@RainCountryHomestead thank you for your response. I thought so too. I called Lehman's after I asked the question, and they said they would ship one out to me!
Does anyone have a suggestion for a tool to make it easier to get the hole in the belts to fasten it together? I need to tighten mine and have a hard time getting the hole made to get it hooked together.
I'd say use wd40 if it is seuzed snd swwing machine oil isn't being effective. Once unseized, use seing machine oil. I'd avoid and ckean off any that gets on painted surfaces, es I ecially if it's damaged. But I'm not an expert.
I am no expert either but have been sewing for 42 years and of all the machines I have owned, this treadle machine has been the one to need to least amount of oiling and maintenance. just an occasional clean out with the air hose or the WD40
I sew nearly everything that I wear. I rarely buy manufactured items for wear or the house.. I didn't know that Janome made a treadle sewing machine. I've been wanting one for our new sustainable house on the homestead. THANK YOU!
I had no idea that you could buy the machine with a treadle. That is amazing!
I have a 1915 Singer treadle that I would not trade for any money. It sews through anything and even without having any of the fancy bits, I've made some great things with it. Just found your channel today and am enjoying what I've seen so far.
Everything sewing is just near and dear to me. Wish I had more time to interact with my machines.

I make my stick horses on an antique treadle. And I prefer my treadle to an electric.

There's a video on making a universal treadle base. Maybe it'll fit your table.
This has been working for me for about 10 years now with no issues so it is all good :)
I have an old new home machine it was my moms its a treadle.

Hello, Heidi. Many years ago, I was gifted an Elias Howe Jr. treadle machine…circa mid-1800’s. I’m still trying to find a shuttle for it. Looked everywhere & will have to have one custom made. I would love to be able to use it! 🙂👍
Have you checked Amazon they may have one.
😀
I’m looking for one. I have a White Rotary that is electric made in 1949.
Heidi, do you have a book on all you extracts? Or your herbs ' what to take and so on? I dont have f.b. or other!. Appreciate so very much the information you share. Karen
Sorry, I do not have a book of any kind out
If you find a vintage machine that needs repairs, how difficult is it to find a repair shop that can do it?
I really do not know. We do not have any kind of sewing machine repair shop near us. We have always just done the needed work ourselves.
If you live near an Amish or Mennonite community, sometimes they have people that know how to repair them.
I have wanted one of these! Is there just one version from Janome?
I believe it is the only treadle they make
I just got one of these today. I'm a long-time treadler and have many, many antique & vintage treadle machines. All of my old girls treadle so easily and smoothly. This Janome seems very stiff by comparison. Have you found your 712T to be a bit stiff compared to the great old treadle machines?? Thanks!
I cannot compare as it is the only treadle machine I have ever used and I love it
Thanks for the quick reply!!
My treadle cabinet is a singer and as noted in the video, there was only one piece that did not fit perfectly but it still works great
I wish I had one. I have been eyeing them but some many other things come first. Would you consider buying a vintage one?
I have a vintage treadle machine and I would definitely recommend! Make sure your treadle works on your table and that the machine has a bobbin shuttle, all it’s parts and isn’t just completely worn out. You should be able to use it and pass it to your children!! (I have a machine like Heidi’s as well and it has reverse and zig zag.)
Yes, I have and I explained why I did not get one as much as I love them
I just ordered and received my 712T but there was no belt. Where did you get one?? Anxious to get it into a table and treadle!
It should have come with one but you can also find replacement belts on Amazon amzn.to/4all0bu
@@RainCountryHomestead thank you for your response. I thought so too. I called Lehman's after I asked the question, and they said they would ship one out to me!
I wish I had my momma's old treadle machine. But my brother sold it instead of giving it to me when she died. 😢
That is a shame!
Does anyone have a suggestion for a tool to make it easier to get the hole in the belts to fasten it together? I need to tighten mine and have a hard time getting the hole made to get it hooked together.
a small nail and a hammer. Make sure to drive it through with a block behind it OR you can even use a seam ripper if you are careful
@@RainCountryHomestead that's what I've been doing with a nail and I keep smashing my fingers. I'll try the seam ripper.
Saw ur post on fb about Epsty, 72 age, so many ppl r so clueless how they abusive to others 🤢🤢🤢🤢😒😒😒
Do you make quilts?
Yes, when time allows, I have made a great many, mostly the quilts made form old jeans
What brand is that machine?????
Okay just heard brand .
