I inherited my great grandmothers 1948 15-88 treadle and have been using your videos to figure out how best to restore and take care of it. This is the most similar one I've seen to her's! :)

Am a long time treadler and I sew braided straw for making straw hats, leather, velcro, canvas, and regular woven fabrics including silks and loosely woven cottons, with more control than on electric machines. To me, a treadle base is the most versatile way to power a sewing machine. My projects can be fairly complicated so sewing super fast isn't an issue.

I learn so much here. I had never heard of a 'slotted binder foot'. What a great tool! Perfect for reinforcing edges.

I don't know about the USA but I know here in the UK Singer produced the wooden treadle tables with minimal iron work because even in the early 50s the UK was still under rationing following ww2. My aunt hid her iron treadle in the early years of ww2 because all metal, from fence railings and park benches was taken to make munitions. She was a keen seamstress and losing her machine would have meant no income. Sadly though only the machine survived her extreme measures I have it now it's soaked in history lol

In Italy we are still going with treadles! At least I am... I think that after the world war Italy was very poor but we still had our treadle machines that our grandma’s bought probably for their weddings and such... so newer machines like the 401 was adapted for treadling. Also the Necchi supernovas were treadled... maybe in the singer cabinets... also the handcrack! I think we didn’t like to spend electricity money on sewing... I still think like that xD obviously the richer families did had electricity sewing

I find it interesting that it doesn’t have the commemorative Centennial badge 1851-1951. Maybe it wasn’t introduced to Scotland/England in 1851? I have an 1886 Model 12 Fiddlebase treadle and a 1910 Model 66 with perfect Red Eye Decals. My husband and I refurbished them and they work wonderfully. The bobbin in the 1886 model is smaller in diameter than all my other Singer machines and has a smaller brass center hole in it. I have two of those bobbins. I can’t find any more! They’re probably worth more than the machine, lol. I have several Vintage/Antique Singers and they just feel so much stronger than my $10,000 top of the line machine does! I prefer to quilt on my Singer’s and do garment sewing on my fancy machine. I love the SOUND of the Singer’s. Especially my 201. The only thing I wish my 1953 Model 201 had was the push button bobbin case like the 66 model has. Wonder why they left off that awesome feature? I love watching your videos. I learn little tidbits of information I hadn’t considered. Thanks!

Loriann Payne me too! I have the 201 in alloy, beautiful and love her dearly but to remove and to reinstate the bobbin case is a pain! Did you watch the video by Archaic Arcane on it? It does help a lot.

I love the table. I’m presently looking for a vintage singer 1200. A 201 with a knee presser bar lift in a table.

My 1934 Singer 15-88 appears to have seen more use castfromthepasthome.files.wordpress.com/2018/08/004.jpg?w=1700
Fluidity in sewing with a treadle comes with practice. Most folks don't use one often, creating a visual that it is a tedious operation. It is not.
Most often my projects require Cordura nylon fabric, and a size 18 needle for the T70 polyester thread that I use. Occasionally I use a size 20 needle and T90 polyester thread. Simple hems and seams are no problem for the treadle, except where a double hemmed panel laps a seam. Five or six layers of fabric require hand wheel application. This is true of most domestic sewing machines.
The power of the machine is derived from the weight and diameter of the cast iron flywheel, not how hard or fast you tread. Adding additional weight to the outer circumference of the flywheel would increase it's power, providing that there is enough tension on the belt to turn the balance/hand wheel, which is under resistance from the needle bar.
It is important to note that these machines were engineered to perform within a domestic capacity. Forcing them into a commercial capacity will only create unintended wear and component failure.
My 1934 treadle was built 20 years before I was born. With care, it will still be serviceable long after I'm gone.

Great video! I have just been given a Jones D65 which looks identical to this. Is the Jones D65 a clone of the 15k?

    • @cometahyakutake9375
      @cometahyakutake9375 4 роки тому

Val S kind of. Jones had also a great history but these machines, the 15 series were the most imitated models of all times. The set the standards for sewing machines worldwide.

i have a treadle 201k and its nice to use but definitely not as powerful as the electric motor driven units and therefore it will struggle with leather over 3mm thick that's with a jeans needle, i haven't tried it with a leather needle, so i would imagine the 15k is very similar? i would recommend those treadle machines to anyone who has the room , i think they are a good sound investment and can only go up in value, they are relatively easy to get used to master, like riding a bike, and the fact that they don't rely on electricity and are can be used anywhere, anytime is a plus for me, a handy machine to have in a hurricane area or area subjected to frequent power cuts . they are supper efficient, have a very low carbon footprint and will last a number of life times if looked after properly, which should tick all the boxes of those conscientious of the environment.
on another note, i did wander if cable tying another balance wheel to the other , back to back would make any improvement on power/penetration? its food for thought on big jobs and worth experimenting with?

Where are you located? I think I want to focus on vintage machine restoration. I would love to get at least one vintage machine. My wife is s professional seamstress and I've started servicing machines.
