She's been doing this since Russian forces seized control of the peninsula 10 years ago, saying, "It is nothing else than the repression of the entire Crimean Tatar people."

Hello - Crimea is an interesting place -One of my friends years ago spoke of Russians always taking their winter vacations - for centuries - in Crimea where it was possible to eat papayas and fruit salads with ice cream. So looking at Crimea - it was always a Russian vacation spot - and it was a home for Muslims who let everyone in - Greeks, Turks, Ukrainians etc. So Ukraine wants it to be theirs. Perhaps that has a point. But really this little piece of land is loved by many nations. I haven't even added those amazing sailors from Lebanon. If I think long enough I will add old regimes from all the ports that happen east and west of Crimea. This is the problem of thinking that Crimea is land. Basically it is almost an island surrounded by water. So think boats and water. Of course it has prime importance - for shipping. But ignoring the number of people that have had it as a touchstone makes this a very difficult area to manage. There are millions of muslim Tatar and Turkic people living in Russia with their own autonomous governments. I think Crimean Tatars shouldnt take side on this conflict. They will be living either under Ukraine or Russia. How does it matter for them ?. I think most of them are already speaking Russian for generations.
Crimean Tatars had legitimate fears about living under Russian rule. But since Russia recognized them as a native population of Crimea, restoring their pre-1944 status, those fears have for the most part been put to rest. You're right. Crimean Tatars do speak Russian as their second language. Very few speak Ukrainian.
