I spray the craft paint with a Grex Tritium TG3 pistol style airbrush. That has a .03mm needle. A .03-.05mm needle is what I have found works the best spraying craft paints.
My air compressor is set to 20-25 psi

Excellent for a beginner like myself. Thanks.
Strainer details? I'm sure not all strainers are fine enough and some are probably too fine.

Great video. I have been starting to use craft paint more often due to cost and availability. Thinning is definitely half the battle. Never thought that I needed a strainer until I saw your video. Cant want to try that out.

Really you should be straining EVERYTHING you put through your airbrush. From primers, to paints, to clear coats. It's just good practice. You can buy 100 disposable paint strainers for like $5-6.

Finally after watching sooooo many videos I come across one hobbiest who strains his paint. It is amazing the little cruds in there even in a new bottle of paint. Thank you for showing this aspect of your process. Some paints such as Alclad II lacquers may not need straining but craft paint definitely. Household sudsy ammonia will help clean your strainer if it gets too grungy, odor kind of strong so be careful. Cheers

Thank you I appreciate that, yes no matter how well you mix craft paints the strainer is a must if you are planning to use it in your airbrush. Those small particles of paint will get in there and cause clogs.

Absolutely right, Alclad is a lacquer and it works by evaporation, when the nitro cellulose thinner has evaporated the paint is dry. And as long as the resin is in the medium it will stay wet.
With these "new" water borne acrylics it quite different. These paints don't really dry, they cure when they come into contact with air. So that means every time we shake the bottle or stir the paint we are curing small pieces of it.
This os also why Alclad has no tip dry while water borne acrylics do.

    What's your thinner mixture?

It’s a 50/50 mix of distilled water and windshield washer fluid then topped off with 91% isopropyl alcohol and 10-15 drops of glycerin.

If I may make a suggestion, you should say what type of Airbrush you are using along with needle size and PSI you spray with. It would be a good starting point for people wanting to try craft paints.

    • @leewright653
      @leewright653  8 місяців тому

Yes that’s a great suggestion. I was going to do another video about that but I will add it to the pinned comment above.

Never saw it done like this. Took me awhile to learn to thin my paints. I use just water, like 3 drops and 2 drops of craft paint.
8 out of 10 times this works for me. I get great results.
Never once thought to strain it and just run it through the gun. I might have to try this at some point. Great idea!

It’s pretty much the same as thinning and using automotive paint. ALWAYS strain what goes in the gun.

I really appreciate how this UA-camr tackled such a sensitive topic with grace and sensitivity. They didn't shy away from the difficult questions or issues, but instead approached them with empathy and understanding. It's clear that they did their research and took the time to really understand the perspectives and experiences of those affected by the topic. This video was a reminder of the power of empathy and the importance of listening to those whose voices are often marginalized.
