Was looking for a way to use my large collection of Folk Art paint in my airbrush. Didn't want to spent a lot on airbrush paints. This worked. You rock.
I had never even looked a acrylic craft paints and then i saw this video and i went to my local Walmart and bought 4 bottles of it costing between .58 and $1.19 and i got some really nice colors. I used one and was amazed at how well it turned out. Thank you so much for such a great video. Happy New Year.
Ok ok ok Monty..... now that I’ve watched you use the acrylics and your techniques ...... I’m gonna FINALLY try it! Lol Great tutorial buddy! Thanks for sharing ! God bless.
Great video! I'm still new at using acrylic paints with the airbrush so this is very helpful. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and skills. Edmonton, Alberta.
Awesome tutorial, Monty, you are a natural...the craft paint turned out incredible and dont you love the easy cleanup!!! Nice to see you walk us through your clearing and polishing techniques as well...thanks for sharing...see you next weekend!!!
Hi like the cars great job on them , I started using Pledge revive it floor gloss on my kits as an experiment and it workedgreat and no need to polish as the finish is great just like high gloss shine.
Thank you Charlie, This is just how I do my paint jobs. Good luck with your airbrush. Remember it is a learning experience, you may need to adjust here or there to get it to work for you.
Monty, What a great video. I like the fact that you went through and explained the reason for using the clear that you did as you can wet sand it. as opposed to the acrylic clear I use that has to be dry sanded. Very informative and fantastic results. I'm no way an expert but but I thank you for the mention. It was much appreciated. Look at that, I'm subscriber number 631. Here's to you reaching 100K subs one day. You deserve it.
Thanks Monty & Chris... As a newbie you have reassured my. thought to purchase my 1st airbrush. Im going to start off with the Pashe single action gun...ive seen some great stuff with these here on you tube, i feel its a good beginner gun not to complicated. Thanks again i cant wait to try acrylics and leave the expensive rattle cans behind.👍
Hi Monty, my name's Chris & I just got a new airbrush kit(never airbrushed before)......very impressive tutorial on that 'Cuda......beautiful job. I hope to gain some experience on my kits in the future like you have......well done sir.
Thank you for the video, I learned a great deal about layering and wet sanding. Looking forward to your next video. Best regards. Sgt Jufer. Lakeland Florida
Thats a very impressive finish Monty, I've never yet painted a body using craft acrylics, used them on interiors pretty good though. I'm going to have to give it a try, great video mate really enjoyed watching that
Awesome tutorial Monty, I just started to use acrylics and I did the same step as you, but for some reason it didn't came like that the first time, by the second time I use a deferent clear, and work out better, I'll be spraying again another body to practice more, thanks for sharing my friend...
Thanks for that tutorial I use a lot of dupli color but the colors are limited. I really been wanting to try something new and I think I'm going to give that a try with my air brush. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge very appreciated
Thanks for the wisdom, Monty. How should I lay the clear coat if I want to apply decals? should I give it a mist coat first, put the decals, let it dry then two or three coats a few days later?
Thank you, I have stopped using the Rustoleum 2X clear. They changed the formula and it doesn't work as good. I'm using automotive 2K clear now. I hand sand and use the Novis polishing system.
Your process works great brother. Can't ask for much better than that. I'm certainly no expert .Just have a lot of practice hours. with craft acrylics. Thanks for the kind words though!
@mark I believe it’s after as acrylics are a flat paint. But I’m just learning this stuff too. My question is after it’s all painted, how do you glue parts on? Scratch the paint to bare plastic or use a superglue?
Thank you for this video! After a few coats of that clear, would you say the surface is pretty scratch resistant considering the fact that it's an acrylic paint?
Hi i got this clear rc 110scale body shell i cant use tamiya ps polycarbonate i have to use acrylic paint for it the shell is made out off polyethylene terephthalate glycol i seen a sticker on the rc shell says have to use acrylic I fort it would off been a lexan shell never had a shell that's made out of that material before do u know what acrylic paints I can use on the shell or recommended
Hi...great video... Did you say you used Washer Fluid to thin the Acrylic paint? I'm sorry... couldnt hear what you said. Looking for a way to thin Acrylic paint and use in airbrush.
Great Video!!..Jus curious though - what would be your opinion procedure of the percentage of thinner and paint, as well as air pressure using the Passche " H" Airbrush .. if one was to use the Craft Acrylic METALLIC paint ..thank you
I usually use a 50/50 paint to washer fluid, even with the metallic paints. My air compressor does not have a gauge on it so I don't know what pressure. You need to watch Classic Plastic 101, MC Model Works and Chris Chapman on UA-cam. These guys are the masters with acrylic paints.
Are you sure the rustoleum clear coat is enamel as you state in the video and not a lacquer? I'm asking cause of what I found on Amazon saying its not enamel. I'm totally new to this so sorry for asking. Thanks
I quit using the Rustoleum about 3 months ago. They changed the formula and it didn't work for me. I have gone to use automotive 2K clear and it works much better.
Awesome awesome video! Brand new to the hobby and this helped a lot. Two quick questions. What setting are you at on your compressor psi wise? And two what needle size are you using on the airbrush 1,3, or 5?
Great video Monty ! I use the same process as you except I'm using Rustoleum crystal clear enamel. I never tried the 2X gloss clear/ do you think the two clear coats have similar properties? Thanks for posting!
Yes, it is automotive windshield washer fluid. I quit using the Rustoleum 2X clear since they changed the formula. I mostly use automotive 2K clear or Tamiya TS-13 clear now.
Awesome video!! I'll have to try craft paint now. I normally use Tamiya or Createx or Scale Finishes. Can the Rust-oleum 2X Gloss Clear be used over any acrylic paints??? Can it be used over Tamiya paints??? I know that paint has a different base.
Hello Monty. Before anything, thank you for sharing your very valued experience. the result is very impressive, beautiful finishing! Very interesting your video/technique with acrylic paint. I have some questions and I hope you can help me with them. Is that thinner, simple water?, that paint are you using is a comercial one or is special for scale models?, how much is the PSI you work your airbrush? Do you coat overall with a special kind of lacquer or it is a simple transparent acrylic spray? (I mean, Rust Oleum is the best of the best) I assume the paint is water base, am I right? Do you give two layers of paint? for how long do you allow the paint to dry? sorry for so many questions but I'm just starting to comprehend this subject with acrylic paints. I did'n finished the video and I started asking questions, that's why answers may be obvious. Thank you so much Monty! great job! blessings for you too.
I thin the paint with windshield washer fluid (blue), The paint is simple acrylic craft paint that you can get at Hobby Lobby, Michael's, etc. My airbrush does not have an air pressure gauge, I'm guessing 25psi. The clear is a Rustoleum 2X Gloss Clear enamel. I give at least 3 coats of paint, or until covered. I let the paint dry at least 2 hours between coats. I learned from watchin CP101, Chris Chapman and MC Model works. Check out their channels.
Thanks for sharing sir. I plan on applying these techniques to my own plastic models (though i build Gundam and other Mecha). Love to see this can be done cheaply. If i may ask, what airbrush was that again?

Great video Monty since I started using craft paint if learned a lot and you just added more to it thank you.
I'm glad I can help. I have stopped using the 2X clear because they changed the formula. I am using automotive 2K clear now.

Great quality spray gun, I only have a cheap one but that is also does the job.

Thanks, I started using the clear after Rodney Clements (ACME) showed me how he sprayed models.
I just found this video. A very nice presentation! And you got excellent final results. I subscribed so I can see what else you have videos on.
Thank you, I hope it helps.
Great tutorial, Shrek, I mean Monte! Goes to show you don't need expensive airbrushes to get great results. Thanks for the video.

That color that you used looks good on a Cuda body. Good choice!

I didn’t know that you could apply enamel clear coat over acrylic paint?
Just getting ready to learn airbrushing, great video. How do you do the polishing? By hand? With a soft towel and the compound?
Thank you, I have stopped using the Rustoleum 2X clear. They changed the formula and it doesn't work as good. I'm using automotive 2K clear now. I hand sand and use the Novis polishing system.
Is the Windshield Washer Fluid with (prevent Freezing variety (all season)) or without Alcohol (Summer variety)?
Nice color que vuen color
Thank you
Sir u did a really good video,thanks
Thank you
Thanks for the video. Does the wiper fluid affect the color since it has a blue tint?
No sir the wiper fluid does not affect the color. I have painted several white parts and there is no hint of the blue. Thanks for watching.
is that just windshield wiper fluid like you get at walmart?...and what do you use to clean up your airbrush afterwards? great tutorial

Hi...great video... Did you say you used Washer Fluid to thin the Acrylic paint?
I'm sorry... couldnt hear what you said. Looking for a way to thin Acrylic paint and use in airbrush.
Yes the cheap blue windshield washer fluid. Depending on the paint, I usually thin 50/50.
Great video, Monty! I have always heard that you cannot put enamel on top of acrylic. I'm glad to learn that enamel clear is okay. Thank you.
I would try it on a scrap body or something first just to make sure your paint is compatible. This has worked out for me but I'm not an expert.
Thanks for the video and God Bless!
Thank you sir, I hope it helps
do you have any trouble with bare metal foil not sticking to the clear coat? BTW - Great tutorial!
I haven't had any trouble withe the BMF not sticking. On some models, I BMF first and clear coat over the top to protect it.

@@montydavis6046 thanxs for replying soo promptly Monty ..very much appreciated..and thanxs ever soo much for the leads..take care!
Have U tried floor polish as a clear, instead of the enamel clear? I heard it good. Cheers Graham.
I have.. you have to spray it on heavy to get a shine.. so it’s susceptible To runs and you can’t polish it
I like your style, brother.
Thank you
Great vid bud and great process

Thank you, I hope it helped. My compressor does not have a gauge but I would guess around 20psi. I use a #5 needle on my airbrush.
Great video Monty ! I use the same process as you except I'm using Rustoleum crystal clear enamel. I never tried the 2X gloss clear/ do you think the two clear coats have similar properties? Thanks for posting!
Thank you. I think it is the same clear, the 2x just comes out twice as fast.
Can I ask how to obtain one of those rotisserie kits??
Great video Monty! Did you sand the body before you cleared it and if so, what grit sand paper did you use?
No sir I did not sand the body. Acrylic paint is very fragile. I only sanded the clear coat which is either enamel or I use 2K clear now.
Nice finish. I always seem to sand down to the paint. Can you describe how much pressure you use? I must be heavy handed.
Very lightly, I have sanded through myself.
How long do you wait between coats of clear? What color did you paint the interior, if I may ask? Thanks!
I waited about 2 hours in between clear coats. I have not finished this kit. I was just using the body for my videos. I will probably paint it white.
Where do you get Novus
What kind of polish is it
Would this method work on diecast metal?
Awesome, very nice. Subbed! God bless
Thank you
great video brother, never shot acrylics yet, is that automotive washer fluid??? I looked thru the comments and never saw this asked, God Bless
Yes, it is automotive windshield washer fluid. I quit using the Rustoleum 2X clear since they changed the formula. I mostly use automotive 2K clear or Tamiya TS-13 clear now.
@@montydavis6046 thanx 👍👍
Great video. One question. How do you wet sand the edges without taking the paint off?
Thanks
Very Carefully! I have sanded through several edges just learning. I try to avoid sanding near the seams and edges.
Spray the rattle can clear into a jar and use your airbrush.
I'm pretty comfortable shooting acrylics, but my question is this- is acetone stronger than paint thinner ( I use it to clean my brushes)
Acetone is strong, I just use the blue windshield washer fluid to clean my airbrush after I shoot acrylic paints.
Muy útil gracias
Awesome video!! I'll have to try craft paint now. I normally use Tamiya or Createx or Scale Finishes. Can the Rust-oleum 2X Gloss Clear be used over any acrylic paints??? Can it be used over Tamiya paints??? I know that paint has a different base.
Thanks for watching, I have only used the 2X over FolkArt, Createx and Anita's acrylic paints.
So just to be clear...your using pure windex and mixing 50/50 with the paint?
No sir, cheap windshield washer fluid. Windex usually has ammonia and will mess up your airbrush.
Great tutorial. What needle size are you using on your brush?
I was using a #5 needle, thanks for watching, I hope it helps.
Thanks! I have a .3 on mine and couldnt get good coverage. I always end up with a grainy finish due to the overspray. Cheers!
Hello Monty. Before anything, thank you for sharing your very valued experience. the result is very impressive, beautiful finishing! Very interesting your video/technique with acrylic paint. He's thins it out with 50/50 Windshield washer fluid and water.
Good job
Thank you sir
Very good video, thank you very much. Question, is the clear paint OK to use over Decals. Thanks
Thank you, yes you can clear over the decals.
Thanks for sharing sir. I plan on applying these techniques to my own plastic models (though i build Gundam and other Mecha). Love to see this can be done cheaply.
If i may ask, what airbrush was that again?
The airbrush is the Paashe H single action. I'm glad I can share what has worked for me.
Hey Buddy. I do this same thing. It's hit and miss for me. I'm clearing acrylic black and it just looks like crap.
Is there a reason to use washer fluid instead of reducer??
You can use an acrylic reducer, I use it for the cost. Water will make the paint “break” and spot.
Do you use primer over bare metal when spraying - I have a lionel train project that has bare metal and plastic.
I always use a primer when using acrylic paint, it helps it stick to the plastic.
Hey there! Do you leave your mixed paints in the siphon jars or clean them each time you spray a color?
Once I finish the project I empty the jars. Craft paint is so cheap, if I pore out a few cents worth it's no big deal.
Hey Monte, can you use clear coat on that type of paint even if it is for lacquer paints?
I don't know about lacquer clear but I have used the enamel and 2K urethane clears.
from the video, is this counted as 1 coat of airbrush acrylic paint? how many coats to you usually do? thank you
Depending on the color, I usually do 2 to 3 coats.
The Novus 2 should be enough to give you the shine you want. If you use Novus 3 first, that is the "scratch remover," Novus 2 is the polish.
Thank you
