Am I correct in thinking that if you are replacing a quite ancient old cooker where the incoming gas supply is just above the skirting board, then new metal piping has to be run to get the hose connection to a minimum of 750mm above the floor?

    Came here to try and find out just how much a botch the guy who installed my gas hob and propane bottle did. Nearly a week later, having occasionally caught the whiff of gas I pulled the electric oven out from underneath and fired some kitchen cleaner at the cooper pipe junction. It immediately started buzzing and bubbling. Half the bottle of gas is gone. And I'm probably quite lucky. Obviously the bottle is now off. Obviously now I have to pay someone to come and do it properly.

    Thanks Derek, well explained and good camera work. I'm a design engineer (and not qualified in gas work). The reason I have sought and found your website is probably common to many people. I have a gas cooker, which has been un-plugged and re-plugged from the gas supply on a few time (when decorating, or maybe when cleaning). I'm replacing this cooker with an equivalent type - sizewise etc, just more modern -same manufacturer. When I read the sales blurb, it stated that a qualified gas-safe engineer was required to install the replacement cooker, IF the manufacturer's hand book said so. I looked up my replacement on-line (Hotpoint, similar physical model) handbook ,which gave the measurements for installation and was very vague as to whether I needed (by law) for a Gas-safe engineer to install it. In my case, I could simply plug in a standard commercial bayonet gas connector (the hose is in good condition) and simply wire up an electric plug to have a fully functioning gas cooker. Do i still need to pay for an additional gas engineer to check installation - without an engineer check, does simply plugging in an equivalent model (but not exactly the same ) invalidate my defence (when I inevitably end-up in court) for correct installation?

    • @tomkatgastraining
      @tomkatgastraining  2 роки тому

      I am in the process of making a video on this but in short a new gas cooker will need to be installed and commissioned by a gas engineer that is competent to do so and gas safe registered or you are breaking the law

    Hi Derek, does this video still apply to regulations in 2022 or have they changed, because a gas safe engineer came round and had to alter the pipework and fit a new bayonet to connect to the back of the free standing cooker, but he's put the bayonet wall plate in at 750 h and angled it away from the wall so now the cooker won't go back where it was originally and now it sticks out by atleast 2 inches from the worktop and the same gap at the back, he's said that's how it's got to be now, could he of used an online bayonet wall plate as you have in this video or does it now have to be angled away from wall, what he's done doesn't seem right as I can't push my cooker back, any advice is welcome, thx

      Tom Sephton-Brown all the correct test had been carried out on the gas supply to be able to work on it . I guess with your comment you are not a gas engineer but thanks for your comment and watching

      Tomkat Gas Training my comment was that you had carried out the leak test but not put in place any controls...at least not shown on the video...to prevent the gas valve at the meter being opened in error whilst you were working on it. A simple means such as zip tie or a chain and padlock around the valve lever would have gone a long way to maintain that isolation. Maybe you did it and didn’t show it in the video but it was a training video after all.

      Tom Sephton-Brown all appropriate precautions were taken when working on the installation. I never left site at any time and the customer was informed of everything that was going on.

      Tomkat Gas Training nevertheless what I’m recommending is a safer procedure and it appears from your replies that you accept that. Your training video made no mention of isolation from the main gas supply so the precautions that you took as described in your reply to me, whilst not adequate in my opinion, were not explained to the intended trainees in your video.

    • @tomkatgastraining
      @tomkatgastraining  4 роки тому +1

      As you know the video is made for trainees they are taught the procedure for tightness testing if I had to go through the procedure on every video I would be repeating myself over and over again and the videos would be an hour long and no one would watch them. I still guess with the comments you have come out with you are not a gas engineer or trainee gas engineer so this video as I said at the beginning of all my gas videos is not for the have a go DIYer.

      In 2009 we changed from corgi to gas safe so please make sure your cooker is installed by a gas safe registered gas engineer who is qualified on cookers as not all engineers are qualified on all appliances. Than you 👍🏻

    In all the training we have done In the last 25 years we have never been allowed to clap the cooker chain to the gas pipework of the cooker
    Why do you think it is ok to connect the safety chain to the cooker pipework.
    What if a child climbed on the cooker door and the cooker tilted and ripped out the gas pipe from the cooker.
    The chain should be fixed to the frame of the cooker with washer and longer screws

    • @tomkatgastraining
      @tomkatgastraining  3 роки тому

      mrcagas so why do the manufacturers supply the pipe clamp and by the way the chain is to protect the hose not the cooker also it showed it in the instructions for the cooker and it was also supplied by the cooker manufacturer

    • @mrcagas1158
      @mrcagas1158 3 роки тому

      In the country the cooker was manufactured in the gas law in place may allow the bracket on the pipework.
      So just because it comes with the clap for the pipework doesn't mean you have to use it.
      You should follow the rules and law in place in the UK,
      And the chain is to prevent the cooker from falling over in the event of someone climbing on the door and the cooker falling over, that's when the chain would come into play,
      And would not allow the cooker hose being ripped out of the cooker.

    • @tomkatgastraining
      @tomkatgastraining  3 роки тому

      mrcagas I think maybe you should release that you follow manufacturers instructions or even realise that the chain is never going to stop a cooker being pulled over thanks for watching the video and your comment

    • @mrcagas1158
      @mrcagas1158 3 роки тому

      @@tomkatgastraining 100 % nowhere in the manufactures instructions does it tell you to fit a bracket to the gas pipework on the cooker. (And if it did that would need to be reported.)
      And the whole reason for a stability chain is to help the prevention of it falling over.
      Your way is against BPEC training and anyone watching this video should not use a cooker chain in that manner.
      (You actually do some fantastic video's, for people who are training your actually second to none with your advice.)
      But you can't use your personal opinion as a way around the safety regulations.
      If you want I will dig out the regs,
      You must remember these video's are for the world to see.
      And ps looks like you have a thing about blowing the flames out for the test, but we are also supposed to as much as possible prevent gas being let into the room.
      Again you seem to be trying to stretch the reg to there boundaries.
