Idk, it would've been pretty rad for him to swoop in and dismantle one of the rival crime bosses operations. Unknowingly helping Penguin achieve his goals, and letting Vic experience Batman for the first time.
The decisions they made with the character and story direction were actually genius. He’s a villain but he’s someone you can empathize with and see some good in. And the world building/details + cinematography + score are all elite.
If there’s a shot of Batman in the background tiny on a building, just watching, I’d lose my shit. Like the Riddler shot in the movie early on in the top left corner.
1. Oz wasn't thinking of the women in his life, he was starting to think of a scapegoat. 2. Victor wasn't feeling empathy. He was showing he could analyze a situation, see the problems and find the solution. Qualities that will help him & Oz.

@@dialm4masala718nah, probably from birth, this series happens right after the 2022 movie and if the crash did that to his foot, he would be in a hospital and not walking for a while
Another great thing about this episode is that we get to see the people of Gotham's perspective about the events that happened in The Batman 2022 movie. Normally in other Batman media once Batman saves the day, everything goes back to normal, we are never shown the effects of the chaos that happened during Batman's encounters with the villains from Gotham citizens POV.
The Knights have been used as the named for Gotham's Baseball, Basketball, Hockey, and Footballs teams at different times in the comics. The football team was only called the Rogues in the Nolan films.
penguin hops in a volvo 240 because volvo 240s are actually indestructible, would be a safe car to get hit in and these old volvos are know for being surprisingly fast. plus its a perfect working class vehicle so it fits the vibe of that part of the episode/his origin
I liked how they used Danny Elfman's music from Tim Burton's Batman Returns as a leitmotif for Penguin, in the first part of the episode. Anyone else notice that unsettling violin note?
I also spotted that funnily enough, The Penguin gives Victor a cigar and he smokes it. It's funny because Penguin's actor Collin Farrel asked for his character to smoke on screen due to it being an iconic Penguin thing, but the producers didn't let him because Warner banned smoking from their own movies
Love the review! I have no problem with the name and totally agree the backlash is lame. Penguin has been the same for damn near 80 years in the comics. Change is good. I like that they did try to change the Joker in the Suicide Squad (although it wasn’t good) but change is good. I trust Matt Reeves.

The newspaper article mentioning Alberto Falcone coming out of a Chinatown nightclub could possibly be an Easter Egg reference to THE MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL, in which Michael Zegen’s character, Joel, owns… a Chinatown nightclub.
I also felt like in the Blame it on Mame scene, the underlying significance is that the word Mame is usually used to mean to disfigure etc, and penguin is disfigured in his face and foot so the meaning would be like" blame what you do on whatever traumatic events made you do it" even though it may just be an excuse to do bad things, which makes sense because when Vick asks who mame is, he said it doesn't matter because "MAME" is the same scapegoat for everyone just with a different face and this grounded iteration of the penguin may have been physically mamed by violence in the past resulting in his injuries/disposition.
When Alberto first mentioned revolutionizing the drug trade I immediately thought that it could be a version of Venom, which in the comics and one of the 90's movies, is the stuff that makes Bane super strong. Maybe it's a toned down version of that?
a good detail btw is that now you mention the fact Vic was thinking about the trachea/spine he is more like nurse/surgeon with how Penguin lied to his mother about Victor.
I'll eventually make my way back on to MAX after I finish my Stargate marathon. Definitely looking forward to this series. I like this version of the Penguin.
