I really like this GBA version, especially the new additions to the game, but still I think I prefer more the original SNES version, since the graphic looks much better than the gba one. good playtrough.
Smash 456 depends. The GBA actually had much more powerful hardware. It was even able to play games in full 3D, which the SNES wasn't able to do. The SNES had a higher resolution and better sound hardware though.
GBA is FAR more powerful than the SNES in every way, graphics included. No contest. As Levobertus said, it's capable of some rather impressive polygonal games even without a dedicated 3D processing chip (it was all done in software via the main CPU). Doom on GBA has FAR better graphics and performance than the SNES version, and doesn't require an additional processor built into the cartridge to pull it off (SNES needed help to do it). Other 3D games like Vrally 3, Asterix & Obelix XXL and Driv3r are even more impressive than Doom. Even 2D games like Gunstar Super Heroes and the Iridion games show impressive quantities of extremely well animated sprites and scaling/rotation effects that blow SNES away. There would have been nothing to prevent them from porting DKC to GBA intact if they wanted, even visually improved (more colors, more better animated sprites, etc).
I blame Nintendo for a light-less screen, it was a dumb move. But the DKC ports were excessively brightened even compared to other SNES ports. To such a degree that they looked washed out and ugly even on non-backlit GBAs. And by 2003, a growing number of GBA games were starting to implement ingame brightness options to opt for the original SNES colors if you wanted. Many of Capcom's ports started doing this, such Magical Quest 2 and Aladdin etc. But even when other developers began offering brightness settings in their games, Rare continued not to do so.
Even resolution didn't stop vast amounts of SNES games from being ported to the GBA largely intact. It was generally dealt with by cropping the sides a bit, narrowing the view. It usually wasn't a problem. DKC did it differently by resizing most of the assets down 25% smaller. I wish they had gone with the cropping method instead, resizing made the visuals ugly and small. DKC already had a dynamic camera that could shift the view around to show players secrets, so it was kind of unnecessary. The GBC port had a heavily zoomed in image but didn't affect my ability to beat it. Sound wise the GBA basically had no dedicated hardware, except for the 8bit channels carried over from its back compatibility with previous Gameboys. You would generally use the 16mhz ARM7 CPU to process sound. For competent programmers, this was NOT a problem and could even be a blessing of flexibility due to the CPU being so powerful. SNES sound has been accurately replicated on GBA. There are hacks that fully restore the sound quality of the Final Fantasy and Breath of Fire ports. Golden Sun takes SNES-caliber sound and elevates it a level beyond. But i've also heard sound mimicked from other systems as well, Iridion reproduces Genesis/Amiga style synth. A few games used streaming samples with real instruments and vocals.
They even made it part of the main story - and you die all the time - and still you don't just open any of the damn barrels... Damn, it's easy to hate you right away.
I remember this game when I was young the nostalgia behind the music lmao And I remember how hard this game was cuz I never finished it. Shit was annoying lmao
The mines towards the end of the game was the last world section shit i ever played during my elementary days .. But low and behold.. I finally managed to complete the whole game😊 I think i got all the cameras too..
Gee Lord! Nostalgia! I remember finishing this game on GBA a lot, and also played on SNES. The only major difference between SNES and GBA version as in a normal gameplay, besides that GBA has Photographs & Funky’s Fishing & Candy’s Dance Studio, except (just by a minor difference) Master Necky from Necky’s Nuts, all of the bosses pattern and the way to battle are different compared between SNES & GBA
Yes remakes are awesome.but idk there is just something about growing up with it when it is first to be introduced.super Mario bros was my first game I've ever beaten then super Mario world.and then donkey Kong country.ahhhh!memories.
I love DKC1 one, tho i don't see a lot of people talk about this: Aside from a pair of other stuff, the only complaint i ever had about the game is how there are so many underground levels. World 1 has 1, world 2 has 4, world 3 has none, world 4 has 2, world 5 has 3 and world 6 is ONLY cave levels levels. It's a whopping 15 CAVE LEVELS! It's almost half of the entire game!
I keep dying at 21:39 I launch out of the barrel and try to make it to the vultures but I keep falling down the pit. is there any specific button to press when I get to that last barrel before the vultures?
I like the added sprites moving in the background, the shading seems better as well. However, the sound is not as crisp, and the limited resolution of the GBA makes it look super pixelly. I wish these graphics were on the SNES version. I think we can all agree that the GBC version is horrible. :-P
My DKC don’t look like this, the levels are the same but will the hiding passage be the same and the extra bananas? I seen some that I have done that didn’t have rewards like this one does.
Yes it is, with key differences. One, overworld saving. Two, Candy and Funky run a minigame at each of their facilities (Along with Funky world-warping), the photo album, and a stats page that showed if you found all the Bonus Barrels in a level and gotten all the KONG Letters. I grew up with the GBA version of this game.

While a SNES enthusiast might say this game looks like crap, when viewed on a tiny, darker screen this game looks good.
