    I bought the Russian Decapod a week or so ago and it really is a great locomotive. I never realized until you pointed out that the third version has a snow skirt. Overall, really great and informative video that really shows you the ends and outs of each engine.

    the other western Maryland steam locomotive that made it into preservation was a shay that operates to this day

    Colin, Thanks for taking the time to perform the tests. I have purchased a few locos from K&L as I model the PRR, Reading, And a local shortline from my home town in Lebanon, Pa. USA. It was called the Cornwall Railroad and ran from Lebanon to the iron ore mines in Cornwall, 8 miles away. I operate on several model layouts of friends and on several, we use helper engines. The "trick" to using helpers is to attempt to have the helpers, (often two other locos) to take up about 1/2 of the train's weight . While shoving, the helper crew checks the slack on the couplers and when they are shoving about 1/2 of the train, they maintain that slack through the shove. When the train reaches the top of the grade, the helpers uncouple, then drift downgrade to a helper "pocket" to wait for the next train. It is a very delicate process. Shove too hard, the train turns into an accordion and a derailment happens. Don't shove hard enough, and the train "string-lines" on curves and is puled off of the rails by the excess drag of the weight of the helpers. It can get very touchy, especially if the owner runs live coal loads. Cars must also be placed in a balanced manner. Light flat cars or short cars can become a problem as they tend to be affected by the physics of trackwork and the forces of the locomotives. I use a Raildriver now for controlling my Trainz and on more than one occasion , I have run out of steam as my experience is low at this point. Your video's help. Thanks again. Nick Kulp

      Thanks for that information . . .I did learn something . . . . . . and I continue to be open minded and keep learning . . . . . . while I have driven many diesels it is impossible to get experience with Steam . . . . . . . .       @colinstrains5885  5 років тому +1

      Hi Dom . . . .both the berkshires are older models and don't yet look quite right in TRS2019 . . .as well as in need of a script update . . I believe this will be done by K&L trainz as soon as time permits . . .they have a lot of work to do on the entire roster to take advantage of the new texture features in TRS2019. While they look OK in TRS2019 I prefer to wait until they are at their best. Thanks for the suggestion I will add them to my watch list.

      @@justinhicks4897 well a reskin of a diesel is somewhat simpler than a steamer . . .so you might be able to coax someone to do that for some of the smaller railroads . . . . .

      I have learnt a lot about steam control since I did this I had an excellent teacher Steve Lerro of K&L Trainz who regularly drives and/or fires real steam engines. However the Trainz version needed a total revision of the physics after this so I feel vindicated.

    Colin Where do you find the info on how to run multiple engines. Steam and Diesel Electric

    • @colinstrains5885
      @colinstrains5885  5 років тому

      Hi Allan . . . . that is a good question . . . . . . .. I certainly did not find anything very informative . . . . . . . I got my info from K&L trains when I queried steam needing a driver on each locomotive . . . .. . . which makes them exactly like the prototype .. . Multiple Diesels should run with one crew Ok . . they have MU equipment that handles the link to multiple equipment. However if you go to UA-cam and search "How to drive a train in TRAINZ" you will get heaps of videos to choose from . . I suggest try the newer dated ones. Hope that helps.

    So the 484 out pulled 2 of the 4 10 0s ? Or did I miss something? The Hudsons were a McPowerhouse and beautiful also the British built a few ďarling engines. But we Americans built the biguns and with style and magnificent lines. And the Americans matched the whistles to the engines. Just listen to those Big Boys and Niagras.

    • @colinstrains5885
      @colinstrains5885  2 роки тому

      The video was a demonstration of the performance of TRAINZ locomotives, and are not necessarily realistic compared to the prototype. This is because the builder of the locomotive models can either use a standard default configuration or can tailor the settings as desired. A couple of the better developers who are consistently getting these settings right are Jointed rail with the diesel models they produce, and K&L Trainz for steamers. K&L for instance has built his steam locomotive roster over a period of nearly 10 years Using TRAINS 12 and TANE ) which were not very realistic with power settings) . However the early settings module was rather crude, and Steve Lerro of K&L Trains has invested in fine tuning those settings over the years, so his newer models often do have power settings that are much closer to the prototype than models build in his early days. Hope that helps understand the limitations we must endure when it comes to performance

    Man those are pathetic. 10 loaded coal hoppers up a 1.63% grade should be a walk in the park for a 2-10-0
