Seeing Adachi stick up for Dojima in the beginning like that gets to me, man. He does it in the way that matches his character, but to know that they both still care about each other is pretty rad.

  • @mrharvy100

The point of this story is not for you to treat Adachi like a hero or even feel sympathetic to Adachi [he did indirectly kill people, indirectly kidnapped minors, and wanted the world to be shadows], but understand that he is willing to pay the price [which would either be serving time in prison or die by defending that price] for his actions aka "my rules" which was his promise at the climax of P4. He even started helping out the IT before this if you remember his letter in P4 climax which he had no obligation to do so.
He could have easily escaped anytime [he just needs a TV as Minazuki said "you should still have the power"] after Minazuki got him out, have his "revenge" against the IT, or just let the world be destroyed, but that would interfere with his new personal philosophy of paying for his crimes no matter what since he has to respect this reality he hates. He also went out of his way to make sure nobody else died [literally talking Sho/Minazuki out of it whenever possible] because otherwise it's gonna be the fog murders all over again which would complicate the Inaba murder cases that was barely still alive [that Adachi had to confess 100% to keep alive and was truthful about any false leads/evidence the detectives had on him] due to the supernatural nature surrounding it. Adachi doesn't care for any of them, but he can't ignore them either.
Adachi was shown to be annoyed at the delay for not prosecuting him at the beginning and shown relief when the process was happening at the end. It was his new reality/new purpose for life that he needs to follow. Adachi as a character is an interesting foil to Narukami who literally are polar opposites in many ways.
The P4G anime even shown some interesting backstory of Adachi back when he was still in school, early days in the police, etc. It really showed that Adachi had a distorted view of the world seeing the "bonds" as more of a hinderance then what Narukami saw as something to embrace.
At the end you have to at least respect the level of conviction the guy has to pay for his sins [he literally went against a supernatural being to do so while making sure nobody else died]. Nothing more nothing less he deserves. Better then criminals that constantly try to run away/hide/deny what they did. Dojima even mentions in the P4G epilogue that he ended up being a "model prisoner".
Don't be mistaken though Adachi still hates bonds and such, but he is annoyed at himself for getting caught up in the moment where it looks like he has bonds like with his interactions with Narukami or Dojima. He is annoyed that they both see what they consider the "good" part of him, but lets them be because they are "stubborn".
I guess the whole point of the character that the developers want to show that some prisoners may have a shred of goodness or at least a moral compass/life philosophy deep inside themselves even if it isn't apparent for themselves. Not to mention that even if your not a prisoner you could still be considered a bad person like that abusive police officer interrogating Adachi. Not everything is black/white.

+mrharvy100 A side note: Adachi thinks that Minazuki did not cross the point of redemption (A.k.a killing people) like he did. By his own "rules/moral code";, Adachi saving the day with Narukami does not redeem himself for his crimes. He could escape at the end of the game, it was the PERFECT opportunity, but he choose to go back to prision. By his on choice.

    • @Jestrath
      @Jestrath 10 років тому +557

I always thought adachi was a character with depth even in the original persona 4 game. He was an antagonist that felt very human and you couldn't but feel at least a little sympathetic towards him. I really like the fact that made him even more developed as a character in this game. He ends up realizing how wrong he was and seriously does the best he can to make amends for what he has done. Even though it will likely never truly be forgiven.

It's always strangely satisfying to engage in or watch evil-vs-evil combat, isn't it?
That's why I enjoyed the Monsoon fight from Metal Gear Rising, a boss who aggravated many players. It's Sociopathic Child Soldier versus Nihilistic Philosopher. The idiot tries to break you before the fight, and in doing so, winds up bringing out your inner evil. Yes, it's an overused trope, but still awesome.

As for Dojima: He is very kind, but also very naive. He always believes in the good in people's hearts and that's why he forgave Adachi and Namatame at the end...

I mean, Adachi or Yu and the Mystery Gang could just show it to someone if they had a TV around. Especially when Yu was being held in the detainment center during P4 being interrogated when all he had to do is stick his hand into the TV behind him to show Dojima he was innocent.

David Menez They don't do that because of the panic it could cause.
They've all come to realise that if humanity learns of the existence of a world where your thoughts become reality, that your dark secrets are roaming around in the form of shadows and personas it could cause mass hysteria.
Society in Inaba almost collapsed because of the midnight channel, the window into that world.
And don't say they can show it to Dojima only because even if they did, that wouldn't change anything.
Dojima alone doesn't have the power to decide the outcome of the case, remember that he's only a detective. The only people that would affect the case's outcome is the superintendent and the judge.
Why am I the only person who gets this?

Yu and friends say "No, you're wrong. People do care about the truth. Ignorance is not bliss" Yu repels Izanami with the bonds he's made, and she backs off. Yet the masses stay ignorant, and nothing changes.

Through all of this, I'm more impressed about Dojima.
Adachi was a real pain in the ass for him in so many ways - the would-be-murder of his daughter, the lousy detective work Adachi did out of laziness that made him upset, the actual murders that happened within Inaba... and yet he still visits him. It's as if Dojima also grew as a person. He really wanted to kill Namatame for what he allegedly did to his daughter, but Adachi was the real culprit all along and he does nothing to try and kill Adachi for it.
I think Dojima's a pretty big hero through all of this, too. He doesn't see Adachi as a worthless criminal, he sees him as a colleague who went down the wrong path - like an evil version of Yu, same Persona as well. He cares about Adachi despite everything that happened and I think that that's the most unusual thing about the story for me. Dojima freaks out SO OFTEN in Persona 4 over the smallest things, yet in Ultimax he really became Zen.

Fun Fact: The person who gave birth to Hi-No-Kagutsuchi was none other than miss Izanami-no-Mikoto. When she gave birth to it, the flames devoured her and killed her. That started the whole debacle with Izanagi-no-Mikoto (her husband) looking at her after she came back from the dead as an ugly living corpse, her getting angry because she told him not to look, and then the entire shebang with the two happened. So basically, everything is Hi-no-Kagutsuchi's fault for killing Izanami.

"You know... I seriously hate this world. Don't put me in the same shoes as a half-ass brat like you !"
It took me a while to figure out why this sentence hit as right as it did.
Adachi during his dungeon in p4 spent his entire time rambling about how everyone deep down is just as rotten as he is. He hates the world, just like you do, deep down, you're too scared to admit it. Which is why it's okay he kill those people or tries to end the entire world. He was projecting his own shitty worldview unto everyone else.
But here, while he still stands by his mishantropy, he cites it as something that sets him apart from other Sho (and by extension, from everyone else). He hates this world, UNLIKE you.
Adachi hasn't changed his opinion of the world, but he has accepted that not everyone is secretely just like him. That some people geniunely believe in that bonds crap and find fullfilment in it. Which means his justifications were as empty as the investigation team called them. Even more, he has developed the same disgust for those false justifications, to the point he steals one of the punchlines Yukiko threw at him to throw it at Sho.
I love it. It's such a cool development to give to what was originally such a unidimensionnal villain and it makes him both far more human and far more terrifying than before.

    • @Yumil_fab
      @Yumil_fab 3 роки тому +12

@@TheRagnarose yeah, unidimensionnal isn't quite the right word, but Adachi in the original p4 was very much built as a narrative and thematic device first and a character second, imo, until golden came along and started fleshing him out more.
He was meant to be a dark contrast to Yu and be a competent twist on who the murderer was, which are both good ideas to make your villain around, but that was as far as it went.
For that matter, while I don't disagree Adachi was always a pretty realistic character, I don't think it necessarily invalidates the idea he was unidimensionnal. Real life has provided enough examples of real people acting like cartoonish villains over history.

  • @JoshuaDMarti

Definitely what makes Adachi such a
... great negative figure in Persona is how mundane and flexible they made his character.
He is not grandiose, he isn't omniscient nor a complete mastermind. Most of his successful attempts on manipulating people comes from doing batman gambling rather than ACTUALLY foreseeing and anticipating how things will play out. He isn't even a cronic liar, he doesn't try to bullshit his way out of trouble and the few times he did he sucked at it.
He simply is flawed and misguided. His reasonings and justifications behind his philosophy and ideals come simply from his personal experience being projected as a "general fact" and he firmly believed it. And the surprising fact is that he MAY have a point, not that in believing that people suck or that gifted people have less problems than "normal" people is right (cus, really, it's a very shallow way to see life) but that, even if these beliefs are ridiculous, they are also VERY common. And it's easy for people to fall into this. His ideals and beliefs aren't dangerous because they are true, but because they are common. Does he have some sort of justification? Yeah! But he isn't the only person ever that had shitty strict parents! His experience is NOT universal, and therefore, his conclusions aren't neither and WE know he is wrong. He was simply a foolish loser that gained power. But he isn't some kind of evil genius, he is simply /some dude/. An egocentric nobody.
And that's why it makes sense he would become more of an Anti-Heroe in later installments than a real villain. Cus his thinking is not inherently villainic, he is simply flawed, and too egocentric to change his mind, despite being proven that he is wrong. He is stubborn, and that's a common quality in people.
And because he is mundane, that's why he doesn't hold onto the resentment of not being able to reach his goal in p4. He knows he lost, and he won't keep pursuing a lost battle. Did he change his way? Nope, but he is smart enough to understand that he is the loser, so his only other option is to help the winners. He is bored, and knows that it's boring to keep pursuing his ideals, so he just sort of gives up and ends up becoming an ally more than anything.
He is probably the most mundane character in Persona. He is just a bad guy and that's it. A bad guy that has killed people (or plotted their death) on purpose. But still not a devil nor non-human. It's the hard truth of a cold-killer and shitty living being still being... a human.

I’m pretty confident that Sho knew about Adachi as well, and even heard what he said before the Ameno-Sagiri fight. He was probably convinced by him that the world was a really terrible place, that everyone deep down is just like Ikutsuki, but they try hiding it with these “bonds”. He felt as though Adachi was the only one who understood him. But Adachi has grown since the case ended and has realized that what the Investigation Team told him was true. He’s different now. That’s why Sho feels so betrayed. He thought he might’ve had someone other than Minazuki that could relate to him. Sure, Sho was mainly using Adachi for his plan, but the fact he and Minazuki trusted him to the point of telling him most details of the plan just shows a lot. To clarify, I don’t think Minazuki sees him as anything but a tool. It’s Sho who’s getting upset here. Sure, Sho says he was just using him, but the anger I’m getting from him says something more.

Yeah, same, it's kinda disturbing. I'm just minding my own damn business, watching this video and then I'm thinking to myself, analysing his character and suddenly I say this to myself: "Well it isn't weird for him to be kinda surprised that Dojima came back even after he cut him out because he obviously didn't believe in bonds and friendships, so he probably doesn't understand how friendship works."
And suddenly bam! And I'm all: "Hold up...I do not like this." because I don't believe in bonds and friendship, even though logically I know it exists and stuff.
And it's kinda...uncomfortable? Cause this game's kinda shouting at me like: "( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) hey kid, pssst, do you wanna buy some...self-reflection?" And I go "Nah dude, I'm good" but the game goes: "I do not think you understand me. I said do yoU WANNA BUY
      SOME

      *( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)"*

See this is why Adachi continues to be one of my favorite characters in the Persona series as a whole!
Atlas did an amazing job of maintaining his character! He’s still that uber-pessimistic, yet calculated and cunning personality that we all know and love. I love how much of a smart ass he can be especially in the initial scenes with the detective! And then of course, despite being in jail for awhile, he hasn’t lost an ounce of his physical prowess.
P4 Arena Ultimax has evolved Adachi into the ultimate anti-hero. In a way he’s the Vergil to Narukami’s Dante, where the “power” he seeks is through understanding the importance of bonds, where he gets a faint idea of it at the very end which was a really nice touch! 🙏
