This man is so damn humble. He doesn't mention at all that the reason he got injured by the grenade is because he jumped on top of it like in a fucking movie to save his teammates and won the Medal of Honor for it.
@@magneticmagnet4501 his body armor absorbed some of the fragments which saved his life but he was still seriously injured. The teammates that he saved then saved his life.
The Four Horsemen South Korea and the US have closer relations then you think, the South Koreans will never forget on how we saved their existence of the commies from the North.
“America is at the mall” is more than a cliché, it’s a valid indictment of our citizenry’s state-of-mind and their understanding. Only about .005 - a half of one percent - of all Xers and Millennials will ever serve in our armed forces, and that’s a tragedy because they can never appreciate the real sacrifices incurred to ensure our freedoms and opportunities. My twenty years’ active duty began during the height of Vietnam; therefore, I gratefully acknowledge how much better it is to have a “thank you for your service” than a “baby killer” society. HOWEVER, when folks graciously say “thank you for your service” (even to retirees and other veterans), my “gut” tells me they’re really saying: “ . . . and thank God it was you and not me or mine.” The overwhelming majority of our countrymen have no - absolutely zero - idea what “service” factually entails. Sadly, movies, video games, novels, media reports, and broadcast dramas provide wildly - and tremendously - distorted views of what service (and its concomitant sacrifices) are all about. Obviously, this will lead to decision makers/influences - and I’m specifically focusing on most senior elected and appointed Federal officials - who understand pitifully little about military service in general and about combatant service in particular. That’s scary, due to: 1. They are often abysmally ignorant, yet they make/influence decisions that have the potential to send MANY Americans into “harms way,” to entangle us in protracted - and unresolvable - overseas commitments, and to squander enormous and precious resources. 2. They have “very little skin in the game” (have any of Trump’s, Obama’s, Pelosi’s, McConnell’s and their peers’ children or relatives ever served?). 3. They, in fact, don’t even have any/many colleagues, friends or neighbors who have military experiences (how many individuals who hail from “elite” socio/economic/educational background even know a few people have served in the last approximately 50 years, no less since 9/11?). This is a potentially great tragedy in the making for our nation. When Trump’s, or Obama’s, or Bush 43’s. or Clinton’s (as well as their elitist peers) children and/or grandchildren serve - and I mean in “real” military jobs, and not as “figureheads in uniform” - then just maybe our so-called “leaders” will value the lives and the futures of ALL Americans somewhat more zealously.
These type of marines are what keeps our tradition and values strong within our Corps and country. Semper Fi. my brother. Wish I could have been there to protect you.
The thing that sucks about movies or portrayals etc is that even if folks can appreciate those few hours of immersion into that military culture of serving a country, they don't experience the full 4+ years of commiting your life to that service. I have not served and I always feel extreme humility that I have not, and I always wonder if I would be able to perform that duty. I fear not having what it takes to defend my family and countrymans' values at the potential cost of my life
Who the hell disliked this we have to remember the sacrifice of our nation's defenders. A Nation that forgets it's defender loses its defence and falls to the hands of it's enemies.
I remember the morning this happened. Green gear battalion net was buzzing and company net was chaotic, too. Across the entire AO, tali had conducted a coordinated attack on all patrol bases and COPs in Marjah. Our PB, before all the shooting began, had a few “civilians” walking on the dirt road along the western hesco barriers. We had three posts along that wall with post 2 empty at the time. A grenade had been tossed into it and post 2 realized the “civilians” that had just walked by were the ones that threw it as they ran away from the PB seconds before the explosion. I was taking to my squad leader in our mortar bunker about our meeting earlier in the morning, after a night patrol, about the ANA going on daily patrols with us. Then all hell broke loose. When the shooting rang out we put Marines in all the posts to help defend as on battalion and company net confirmed, all of Marjah was under a coordinated assault. Patrol base Kherse along route hedgehog or hotel. Been such a long time.
