WILL THIS 100+ YEAR OLD Boat Motor Run After 30+ YEARS IN PIECES?

- Definitely something you don't see everyday in the Midwest. this behemoth of an engine was made to go inside the hull of a boat and was one of the largest inboard boat engines gray made at the time. in Iowa we don't see very many of these since we dont have much for water around us but this one made it here somehow!
Hope you enjoy!
Oil blowing by the rings causing the smoke?
it is a two stroke it burns oil with the gas for lubrication. this is the earliest era of doing so so they where designed to run 16:1 two stroke mix using 30wt oil. so they smoke just a wee bit.
@neo-UA-camStoleMyHandle no spring left to them so they don't press against the cylinder wall. I even ended up unrolling one until it was flat and it never broke that's how soft and hot they had gotten
.@neo-UA-camStoleMyHandle I thought this was on another video my bad. this engine is a two stroke and has almost perfect compression. no amount of seating or working will make it not smoke its just how two stroke engines work.
@neo-UA-camStoleMyHandle 24hp according to original advertising
if you here what has said at the begining of the video it is a two stroke motor
Doing what men enjoy most - getting old engines to run - Bliss !
Small note on drilling out broken bolts - use a lefthand drill bit and the bolt will usually screw out when you have gone a little way in.. L
I see it still uses the original Armstrong starter. What a BEAST of a motor!
Great video - thanks for posting!
thanks! nothing a little elbow grease cant start.
Looked like it was a few generations newer then the original armstrong starters. They do not age well.
I'm half a hundred, and I've never seen a two-stroke like that. Very cool.
I love to see 2 young men getting involved in good things. Nice job!
Yes, but using french adjustable wrench is example of disrespect to old engine and profession of engine repair man... Seeing this in otherwise nice video makes my eyes blue. Please next time try to use correct size nuts, every shop has it... ❤
As a collector of antique marine and stationary engines myself, this is the kind of content I live for 👏👌
Now that is a motor I would love to have. Huge, 2 stroke, loads of fun. Great work getting it running again.
brilliant old marine engine thumbs up from Australia
Another thumbs up from Tassie 👍
GIANT inline-2 with the right amount of strokes is a beautiful thing. You guys did a great job with this, and like another commenter said I'm amazed it was all there. Best-case basket-case scenario, really.
Luckily for the small amount of moving parts involved 😂
That engine is epic! You guys did a great job putting it back together. It's amazing that some parts weren't lost during the estate sale, as "relics" sold by the auction company.
Also, sorry I laughed when you got hit in the belly by the backfire!
I don't think they ever went into the shed. I never got to see the shed itself but if it was anything like the other sheds the guy had it probably had most of the roof on the ground.
@@cruddycornstalks That's sad when things fall down like that, but in this case you sure got a cool project out of it!
Really cool engine & well worth the effort to get it running. It seems funny to me that people watch this video & see it has no valves but still not realize it's a two stroke!
My old landlord hated all things two-stroke. He'd say they were junk, didn't last or that they had to rev really high to work at all. This video proves what I told him. I reminded him of all the old marine two strokes and outboards that lasted for decades and he declared that they were different somehow, hahaha. Most folks will probably never see a real two stroke idle this low so remember that they can. Diesel two-strokes don't count.
Deflector piston two stroke.
Old Johnson and Evinrudes were the same.
@@redtobertshateshandles 👍👍
Beautiful engine, amazed you could start it by hand!
✌️💚 🇬🇧
I almost made it to the video talking about the "death bar" it came with. A meter long lever that latches into the crank shaft. Scared me to think what it would do if it would backfire so we didn't use it.
@cruddycornstalks Sounds like a wise move, I had an old classic car with a cranking handle, used it a couple of times for fun, but decided it was just a matter of time before I got a broken arm or something and stuck with the electric start!
Wow, that is such an incredible state to find it in - fresh babbit, but no further. Frustratingly relatable for those of us with too many half finished projects.
Great job, Great, you fellas look like you're having fun!!! Awesome job.
Fun project. You guys did a great job.
Ive always loved mechanical devices and these engines really intrigue me .
Now THATS one outstanding environmentally friendly engine!!!!!!!
That's really cool look at the size of those domes that's crazy I love itHave a great day I'll keep watching
Thanks for the comment, I appreciate it!
Some people have all the fun 😊.....my kind of fun... Thanks for sharing the content of the video
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for resurrecting history, and showing us how much fun you have doing it! Excellent video and great work!
I love those old engines, good job guys 👍
Very cool. Ive seen alot of old motors but I never seen on of those . Ive worked on all kinds of stuff and made a good living fixing boats . Retired now. Enjoyed the video. Should put that in a museum.
Super cool!!! thanks for sharing such an awesome machine with all of us..seems like more of a Boat anchor than a boat motor...-John
Love it! Horsepower is not important. The smoke and the sound is!
What a beautiful terrifying engine youve got there, its just a bit big to fit in my 1930 motor launch.
I used to see a lot of boats powered by these cantankerous engines on the St. Lawrence River. They are much prized these days. A good find and a nice rebuild. If you are looking for more information you might try contacting The Clayton Shipyard Museum in Clayton New York. They have a pretty extensive collection and are very knowledgeable on old marine engines.
It’s never too early to start fumigating for mosquitoes. Nice work guys.
I forgot to say you guys did a terrific job but there was too much carbon monoxide in the garage you should have done it outside in the open air where it would be much safer out in the open air 😂
Beautiful old engine. Great work on saving it.
Very nice, glad to see younger people enjoy old iron !
I started watching your channel back when you were starting up hit n' miss engines in ripped camo pants. Your content has always been amazing, and it is neat to watch it evolve over time. Keep up the amazing work!
Very unique! Nice save of this old engine!
Great rebuild. From a pile of 100 year old parts to a sweet running 2 cylinder 2 stroke. Congrats😊
That will definitely put some smoke on the water! Good job guys! Also very nice job on making the gaskets, they actually look like they came out of a package like that!
it would leave and oil stain every where to went! thanks david did a great job on them. i was working on future projects when he cut them otherwise i would have filmed it!
Always cool to see these old marine enginws actuslly running! Lucky find you guys had there with that one!
Well done, I love seeing old machines come to life
Just a little advice when drilling out studs blind holes or through holes get yourself a set of left hand turn drills you’d be surprised how well they work when they go into a stud usually turn out what remains to
ive used them before but didn't have any on hand. i didn't show it but i did try bolt extractors on it before retapping.
Amazing you got it back together and running again.
Great job 👍🏻
thank you!
Beautiful work, on a beautiful engine, Bravo.
Un beau travail, sur un beau moteur, Bravo.
Man what a cool old piece of history. thanks for saving it.
That's just pretty dam cool, Thanks for sharing.
Grey Marine engines were used in landing craft in WW2 and fishing vessels. They were bought by Continental in 1944 and continued until 1967 when Continental closed them down.
What a great thing to be able to do and very clever.
That was wonderful! I saw one for sale on FB in Iowa last week exactly like this. Look it up it sounds incredible
Smoky two stroke. Still it runs. Amazing after all these years. Interesting ignition.
Awesome work on this old gem!
That's pretty amazing! I'm surprised you guys weren't asphyxiated with that old 16:1 (!) 2-stroke running!
it was pointed at an open garage door and was that foggy still.!
AWESOME WORK GUYS!
Wow spectacular job Brother thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise and for taking us on your adventures and hello from romulus Michigan
Job well done 👋 that’s restoring history for future generation’s
I actually remember a few grays in boats in Vancouver bc canada when i was a kid ,from what ive been told they wete very reliable and long lived. They sounded cool too.
Gota love 2 strokes!! Funny to think after all these years my 850cc snowmobile engine is 160 ish hp!! And 1/4 the size of this. Its bass ass. Im sure glad you guys put it back together and made it a runner.
That's an awesome engine!
thank you! it was really fun project!
Couple of comments:
Try using a left hand drill to remove the broken bolt. The drill grabs the remaining bolt and unscrews it
Do not sit with the carb pointing at you
Set up a fan to blow the smoke out of the garage
Overall a great job.
all good pointers. most we either knew and didn't have handy or were too ignorant to care about. and the company that made it put the controls in a terrible spot so the natural spot to stand or sit was right in front of the carb! your one of the few that didn't tell me that a crescent wrench is the wrong tool to tighten a bolt.
Nice job! Good looking motor.
Talk about cheap, I was just given a FEMCO gantry bandsaw for free. That’s a super cool engine! Thanks for saving it.
Love the way it sounds.
New favorite yt channel time to binge everything
Nice work guys.
I damn proud of you guys!
the Deep Purple smoke machine runs again....Good work chaps.
Found this and man that engine is smoking more than my cigar right now lol. Its awesome seeing people keeping this stuff going. Is it possible youre getting blowby? Could a CAT, Cummins, Detroit, or something have rings that fit? Im giving a sub be careful who else would i watch doing this?
It is a two stroke it burns oil with the gas for lubrication
@@cruddycornstalks Ah ok I haven't messed with engines that old. I've messed with older two strokes. Didn't burn as much as this. None the less an amazing time capsule
How sweet is that, good job guys
cool old engine 👍
thank you!
Awsome work 👏
Loves so much sounds of the enjin in running
Extreme Skeeter Killer! Ol Smokie!
man i would like to find a vintage engine like this to run my wood splitter or a big hit and miss engine thank you for sharing have a great day and God Bless
You find some really really cool things
I think it would smooth out and run consistently on both cylinders under load. Interesting old 2-stroke!
I was thinking the same. The heavy flywheel helps but a load will stop it from getting ahead of itself.
yes it would help a lot!
Very COoL. Thank you for the video! I will say there may be quite a few of us who don't actually know the "size of your head"... just saying
Awesome motor, imagine how great it would run on both cylinders 😮, I paid $400 a set for piston rings for one, making sure to use 30w oil for 2stroke mix at 16-1.
Super interesting.Thanks!
hey a question here! Great 2 stroke engine you have there. it runs so slow and peaceful, but how do you deal with the smoke when running it. I have a Sachs Stamo at home which also is 2 stroke and when i run it even for a short period my whole shed is covered in a smoke curtain.
Jeez! 5 3/4 x 6 two cylinder makes 311 cubic inches! neat find!
You ain't seen nothing , look up landz Bulldog dozer , one cylinder two-stroke 11 litres , 650 ci ! Reed valve two-stroke bull dozer , it starts with a shotgun shell !
Is this a two stroke motor ? Can you give some technical details?
Sounds good for a 2 pop. What is the displacement
5 3/4" bore by 6" stroke
5.1 litres or 311 ci
Great stuff, Queen of the Nile, bring lotsa oil
Mount that on a motorcycle, would be pretty kickass.
Subscribed.
Just curios, does it have a reverse?
two answers to that.
yes and yes. first off the engine is designed to run both directions. and secondly the clutch on the prop shaft has a planetary drive for reverse.
that thing is totally F#&king awesome. good job gentlemen
put a Holley on it.
cool engine, Jay would want it.
What gas/oil ratio did you use? Please find someone to put this in a boat. It should be used again. Thank you.
@@williamjames9515 it was 16-1 plus and it also had pilers for each cylinder externally I wanted plenty of lubricant
Old gold.. need some planks and a prop for a fishing adventure one will never forget..😂😂
That looks like fun!
Well done lads.
A really cool 2stroke engine! Perhaps a little bit to much 2 stroke oil!
Like the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz, so relieved after sitting, rusting for so long.
More like a clydesdale horse or twenty four of them pulling a ship up a river bank. Just awesome plus a giggle at your expense. Been there and done this kind of stuff a dang good many years ago. Just think of spending the night with a team of horses and pulling some barge up a river
Great video.
Is it running backwards?
Sounds like a good old girl 😂chuff chuff 😊
Cool old moter
How much torque does it produce? How bout a video of a dyno run 😊
SUPER cool!!
That is awesome....
No insects were harmed in the making of this.
Breaking bolts always sucks. Did you chase all the threads with taps and dies first?
we did but must have missed it or something.
I would like to have that to totally restore to period correct. I have an originalowners and parts/service manual for those motors. . I have a antique launch that would have used an engine like that when it was built.
we will be selling it at some point if your looking for one.
