Hi David there's almost a thousand years of history on the castle site little is left of the original but what you see is from the middle ages it was revamped and lived in from the 1800s until given to the National trust to preserve, if you venture down to the crypt and cellar's it's very much as you would expect,

Wonderful walk through the castle! Lots of modern conveniences. Nice to see the furnishings- I noticed the pretty rugs as well as the lovely furniture, wall paper and fabrics, and the hidden passage is very cool! :) 👍👍

@glyn829 yes it was but I had a great experience at Calke Abbey tunnels as we was invited down as vip for doing a trial for them and we had the whole place to ourselfs. We had a guide but wow some super creepy noises lol

We saw the secret passage from above when we took the roof off in 2006. I'm not sure the trust were aware of it before that? It certainly didn't look like it had been opened up for a while.
