As on second thought.. I am a self taught pianist. I play by ear… from My loved Jazz.. “Moonglow” which I played by ear! My second best is to play my favourites, the famous “In the Mood” then BossaNova my next best tempo…the Balads With my articulate adLibs, coming from my heart. Followed bu Tango, etc etc all my piano performances are just my own style. My audience are my satisfaction so I could play any tune by Heart. Truly, I can’t read musical notes. It was hard work for me… in my own kind of practice. I believed I practised a lot to until I found became a skilled pianist. I was hired on the spot while playing the piano.
Groove for Girl From Ipanema in recent John's short became one of my favorite exercises for rythm. And this lesson is a great gift to dive into. Thank you John! Your style of playing and teaching is incredible.
John, not only are you a great pianist and teacher, but this one lesson is a wealth of material for getting started with the Bossa Nova style. Thank you for all of your lessons, but this one is out of the park!! Thanks!
great instruction, great vid, I've been watching over and over and now I can play 90% of it! Just trying to learn the fun progressions he adds like the descending dominants, etc... I'm an orchestral percussionist and have been learning jazz piano as a hobby. thanks for the vid!
Find explaining harmonization and solo over a well known tune very useful- have played this tune for decades but never really got the solo part working. Willl def. try what you did- sounded beautiful. Well explained as well
Very interesting and the right level of explanation. I can follow all of this although I can't exactly play it too confidently, it is really helpful to see that I am on the right track. For me it's not the theory so much but more the left hand right hand textural elements that are of interest. It really helps give me an idea of how to move forward. Cheers
Thanks so much John! Simple, classy and beautiful. My jazz piano teacher used (up 5th melodic) instead of Lydian Dominant which I found easier to internalize during soling/ comping, etc. However we get there is probably unique to the individual.
Fabulous arrangement, sounds great but when I started to learn it, I couldn't catch up because it was too fast 😅. I also couldn't combine the rhythm with chords which was very frustrating 😢. I would really appreciate if you can give another lesson to explain the chords and a rhythm. Thank you very much. ❤❤❤ Tatiana
Great job! I play a much simpler version and this helped to solidify my understanding of the song. Would you consider recording a UA-cam short on the piano voicing of the original piano solo immediately following Stan Getz?
"Exactly which 'chords' should 'Jobim' remove? Just joking. I was thinking of that scene in Amadeus where the king says, "There's... just... too many notes". To which Mozart responds, "Well, exactly which notes do you suggest I remove?". Yeah, this isn't super easy music, but often the best sounding compositions owe their beauty to some complexity. I've heard people try to simplify songs like this and it just loses it's beauty. I hope you dive in and master this one, Laura. 50 years in, I have learned that taking whatever time is necessary to really own a tune often pays off in understanding and learning other tunes a bit faster. I don't think you'll regret it. (piano teacher for over 35 years). Blessings!
i meant like, there are so many good songs from this genre and yet we only find a few selected songs that really nobod cares about because they are overplayed being thrown out, it´s like only using minor penta for everything, might not be the comment you want but I still watched it all just to pass time but I learnt I´d say almost nothing, nice repeated basslines tho@@ayo_k32

Lovely and tasteful performance and clear instruction; talented teacher (glad one can slow it down to 0.5 speed!)
This is one of the best fun song instruction videos I've ever seen. Simple arrangement, great explanation. A true masterclass.

I like these videos you are doing showing us the ideas we can use.
Amazing performance, tutorial and just wonderful how you build up the solo. It still baffles me how you copied and broke it down. ❤
John a good pianist! Congrats
Great lesson! Learned a lot 🙏 Thank you

What scales do you use to solo over B section?
👍
Great tutorial on "Girl from Impanema.? But the song truly has too many changes.

I donʻt lie
Need lern bossanova rythm first
È spiegato troppo difficile.
Ha utilizzato molte sostituzioni di accordi. È per un pubblico con conoscenza intermedia. Forse dovrebbero scriverlo.
i wish it would have been another song
What kind of comment is this?? Go to a different video if you want a different song. Obviously.
