  • This is a re-edited version of the previously posted episode 17. There were some issues regarding the video sound and contents brought to my attention in the comments and in response I unlisted the video to the public. This version has addressed those issues. In this episode I demonstrate how I varnished the mahogany dashboard located at the flybridge helm. I also work on the flybridge railing layout, remove the old cover boards in the cockpit and replace the plywood and some framing under them. Lastly I fabricate and install the last pieces of epe' to complete the wood rubrail. This video is part of a continuing series documenting the full Renovation of a Classic 1973 Egg Harbor Sportfish boat by working nights and weekends.

Hi Bob, that was a blast from the past. Having watched all your episodes you have a lot to be proud of, what a transformation. I look forward to your update next week. When finished this boat will be a collectors item. Keep up the good work. Best wishes from N. Wales UK.

Hi David, “Blast from the past” I was thinking the same thing when I was re-editing this video. I should look back at these videos more often because I forget how far I have come with this boat sometimes. Hope all is well. - Bob

Hey Bob, Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I've noticed you seem to paint and varnish much faster when you have music playing in the background so...just kidding! The woodwork still looks great in more recent videos so you were doing it right! Take care and I look forward to the next episode. You deserve many more subscribers. Jerry

Hi Jerry, It was interesting to mess with one of my older videos and see the progress since I did it. And yes the faster the music the faster I work. At least in the videos. The varnish seams to be holding up well. We will see how it fares in the sunlight/UV. Next episode in a few days. I need to be working on it now but I’m having fun with some friends at the lake at the moment. There’s always tomorrow. Take care. - Bob

Thanks for the solid overview of the Awlwood system. How long did you allow for the primer to cure before sanding and applying the first coat of clear gloss, and in roughly what temperature/humidity?

I would suggest downloading the instructions from the Awlgrip website as it has all the info you would need to apply their products. That said I would let the primer dry overnight before topcoating. You may not need to wait that long per the instructions. I can’t remember. I have applied it in various conditions with decent results but find that it flows best in the 70’s degree F range. The instructions say that some humidity is required. Where I live in Connecticut summers are usually humid so being to dry is not a concern usually for me. I haven’t applied it in direct sunlight. Thanks for watching and commenting. Sorry for the delayed reply. - Bob

I downloaded from the official web page at the time I was using this product. I have no affiliation with this company. They may have updated their product information since I downloaded it and created this video.
