Happy Saturday to all. Making AFTERQUILTS is one of my favourite quilting things. I like the freedom to explore and play. It's hard not to second guess your choices but try to just let go of perfection and explore colour combinations and patterns. The results will surprise you and delight your recipient...they might even prefer the back. I flip my quilts over every time I change the sheets and it helps add energy to the room. Enjoy! oh and PLEASE SUBSCRIBE

The last quilt I made for hubby and myself ended up completely reversible. I did not use all the precious scraps, this time, as I wanted to save them for another project. Rather, I used some pleasingly compatible fabric.
The front of this quilt, I named, “Wild Child”, because the colors are BOLD. The back is calmer.
It’s nice to be able to rotate it to give the eyes a rest. 😋

I just realized that the quilt I’m working on has a built in after quilt.😃
I’m doing it quilt-as-you-go with sashing. I used the same fabricsl front and back, but with different patterns. I did throw in just a few extra fabrics to stretch it out. It is turning out wonderfully! I’ll post a pic on your facebook page when I’m done. (I still have some borders to add.)

Thank you Karen from a Scottish quilting beginner in lockdown! Just finished my first quilting effort. I’m a perfectionist and like to do everything efficiently so I was all set to give up quilting forever after making
mistake after mistake. THEN I discovered you. Best advice ever - don’t fret about mistakes; don’t unpick, unless vital, cos you won’t notice in the end; don’t hurry; take breaks. Every mistake is another notch up the learning curve. So yesterday I tried to relax and enjoy. So a huge thanks Karen. Just LOVE your channel. Keep these tutorials coming.

Karen Brown, you've done it again. You seem to draw us in and present new info in each video. I was at the fabric store and found the perfect fabric for a backing. When the measurement came in, it was too short for the backing. I realized "I'll just do a Karen Brown and make an afterquilt." lol. I had a package of 10" squares that I only used a few squares of in another quilt, so I bought the fabric and added those 10" squares to my background fabric. Thank you for all your wonderful creations, advice and knowledge.

I love that you addressed fabric fatigue. Sometimes I get so sick of a fabric I begin to doubt myself. This happened with a quilt I was working on for my nephew. I put it away, thinking I had to start all over again with different fabrics that worked better together. When I came back to it after a month, I was struck by the colors and fabric and how great it looked. It took only 2 hours to fully complete and he and his mom loved it! Can't believe I was only 2 hours from completion and I just gave up. Fabric Fatigue - it is REAL!!

My aunt helped me make my first quilt. It's an illusion t-shirt quilt in memory of my mom, she passed in 2019 from breast cancer. I started learning to quilt by crumb quilting. My aunt had me incorporate a long strip of my crumbs with 2 different kinds of fabric on each side on the back. I'm pretty proud of it.

The first time I did thus many years ago, it was because I had a few blocks left over. So I used those on the back in a random placement and used some larger pieces to surround them. Really had no plan. Sometimes it's a few blocks that just don't look right on the front.

Hi there! Your hair looks so pretty! 😀 I love your videos. Always friendly and warm and full of very good ideas. As for me, I might not be cut out for scraps and improv. I've gotten rid of leftovers and scraps because it's tough for me to throw them together. I learned sewing for making garments and then home dec. Sooo..my quilt backings were created with piecing one single yardage to make it look like a giant seamless thing. (I've only made 4 quilts.) I never wanted the backs to compete with the quilt tops that I'd worked so hard on. Maybe that's a newbie thing: "I gave BLOOD for this thing--and you want to see the BACK?!!" 😂

What a fantastic idea! I love this. I'm a 5th generation patch quilter/seamstress, I learned from my Grammy. Her dad made patch quilts to keep her and her 3 sisters warm after my great grandmother passed at an early age. They used every scrap for pillows, shoe bags and more!
I am carrying on the family tradition by using scraps for matching quilt pillows or tote bags. I have never considered using them like this for a backing, and the way you show everything here helps me realize I can do this. I'm so glad I found your channel!! It's hard to imagine what to do as I stare at her quilts wondering how she planned them out. Thank you for sharing this!!

I had to do so once because when I bougth my Black fabric, the Lady at the shop didn't cut it very well and I had to square it up because it was not straigth. So as I had leftover blocks, I user them on my back and I liked it; so now, I have enough leftover, I do the same. And I encourage my friend to do so and it works with them too. They like it.

I did this on the last quilt that I gave to Project Linus. Just had a lot of material left over and I didn’t want to spend any more money on it so took leftover pieces and started putting them together for my back. I didn’t quite get my lines straight when I quilted it but don’t think anyone will notice. I also took my left over batting pieces and sewed them together so I would have a large enough piece of batting to use without buying more! It was definitely a saver quilt. Figure I saved $50 to $100 by not buying backing and batting and that right there will allow me to make another charity quilt. Your ideas were awesome and because of them I’ll be able to do better next time.

In 2020, the school I work at made masks for each student (about 550). I helped sew some, and asked for the scraps, and made some 18", crazy quilt throw pillows; 2 for the faculty lounge, and one each for the principal and vice principal. I also made 3 more 14" scrap pillows for me and my two direct coworkers. It was fun and therapeutic, though by the time I was trimming the pillows with piping I was Done! I did include my initials and the year on the tops.

That's not being cheap or weird. It's being artistic & going the extra mile. I personally feel the back should be as interesting as the front. It's easy to do a one piece backing, its harder to design a back, even if it's more simplified. Its like designing a whole other quilt. Then you have to make sure any lines are straight w/ the front when basting. I love the looks of people's faces when they see the back. 😄

I did have to add some solid white, leftover from the borders, but I ended up with a beautiful reversible quilt. Thanks for showing me how to make a lovely, fun, colorful and scrappy Afterquilt. I will be thinking of this when i have to find my next quilt backing....I'll just make a scrappy one,

I ALWAYS check the 100% cotton bargain bin in the fabric store. There is often something reasonably neutral for about 1/3 the usual cost that I pick up for future backings. (Then I dress them up by with a border or large sashing). But I'm definitely going make an afterquilt 'pillow case/quilt bag' for my next quilt.

I love your energy Karen & your great ideas! I came up with a fun idea, I wanted to share. I am taking my scraps & putting them together to make 30” - 40” sq blankets for our local animal shelter. Nothing measured, nothing matches, no seams lined up. I bought some used sheets at the thrift store to use for backing. (No batting) it’s fun, it’s quick, and will help our shelter take care of so many cats and dogs. Thank you !

I loved your afterquilt. I thought it was good enough to stand alone as a quilt top, so there!
Don't worry about leaving out the coffee pouring, walking up steps, etc. I really don't care for those shots anyway. I'd much rather have the 'meat & potatoes' information than all the extras that some people care to include. There are only so many hours in a day, you know, and all those extra shots just take away from the info I need to glean so that I can go put all these good ideas into practice. Thanks for all your BIG ideas.

Great video and ideas. I usually try to make double sided quilts but I definitely want to try some after quilts. Other leftover projects: I use some of my scraps from kids' quilts to make a matching teddy bear. I also keep the small batting scraps from all kinds of projects in a separate bag, nothing is too small and it doesn't have to match. The smaller the better. Then I pull the batting apart, shredding it to make stuff for the teddy bears.

Karen you opened my eyes to how much fun the backing can be. I used to run out and buy a coordinated backing that “matched” the front. No more! If I don’t make an after quilt I look thru the stash and use whatever piece is big enough. And now when I make wall hangings they’re almost always two sided. My latest quilt backing has a panel in the middle I had no idea what to do with. 🤷‍♀️💕

Love the idea of 'wast not - want not ' ... a rule I try to use constantly ... Thank-you. It is amazing what can be made with what was going to be trashed or forgotten. In generations gone by ... scraps, even clothing, were sewn together to make 'scrap quilts' or a 'quilt of many colors' or even a 'memory quilt'. Fancy names for using what you have ... to be able to do more the next time. I am looking forward to more of your tutorials.

@@DH-qz2so Yes, that's what I did. The paper foundation for those blocks sells for around $10 for 250 papers. Out of my budget. Squaring up the sandwich wrappers would have been better, but I left them at the size they came. It started as a test and ended up being 6 blocks.

When you sew together fabric and one piece is slightly the wrong shape(ie instead of a square you have a trapezoid bc one side is slightly off) it makes it so that there is a peak in the fabric where there shouldn't be. It's like if you're trying to tape 2 pieces of paper together, but the edges of the paper are uneven so you get some puckering or waviness. This is why she emphasizes squaring your fabric and cutting off the edges, so that each block is as precise as possible and fits well.

I just made my first afterquilt. You're right, it's exhausting, but the result is very satisfying. The left over fabric is gone, there's no extra cost, and the backside looks like a second quilt. Thanks a lot for all the recommandations, I follwed them as closely as my left-overs allowed it. What a great teacher you are!

So I made matching pillows, cosmetic cases for the girls, shaving cases for the boys, matching storage totes or cubes, shoe bags andthen a card using the leftover fabrics from the leftover fabric. I don’t have much stash in my stash container cause I use the whole I love making the quilt and backing and any accessories I can create and that soothes my creative brain

Thank you for this video. I want to make more backings. I have large pieces of fabric to use, and fabric from the quilt top to use, but it’s tricky to draft the quilt back you need before the fact and then try and meet the required fabric sizes to make it. I guess your method of no pre-planning is better.

Karen, I love your videos! You make quilting easy and accessible - I'm a beginning quilter, and only do quilting now and then, mostly for Project Linus, between other projects. The afterquilt is a new concept to me, and I love it! You've also given me ideas for the seasonal pillow covers that I make for my white denim sectional. For baby gifts, I make simple flannel receiving blankets (the pattern with a self-binding edge). After watching your videos, I find some quilting techniques creeping in to dress them up beyond their basic two pieces of flannel. Oh, and by the way, I love the scarf you're wearing in this video.

I finally made an after quilt wasn’t as beautiful as yours was ( and I was stressed from thinking too much!) but it almost looks like the front because I had a lot of orphan blocks that I cut the wrong way and didn’t measure up to the right size so I use that for the back and some fabric in between the rows and on the sides. I am going to quilt it the same way you did with soft wavy lines going through a Quilt
