Thanks for the honest and non-biased review, Kev. Following your feedback we have discussed with our US distributors and worked with them to lower the retail price by $50 to $429.99, and reduced the dealer price by $30 to maintain the same % margin for them. We are also changing the pedals to a grippier platform style model within the new lower price. Thank you also to everyone for your comments. This is meant to be an entry-level bike MTB to get people to start enjoying the world of mountain biking. We hope with this price decrease and pedal upgrades that we'll be able to offer you all a great bike for it's price while supporting your local bike shop and getting great local bike shop service. Reid I’m buying one ... ordered online and live in Port Macquarie.... after a few years I’ll buy all the kids one too thanks mate .... very very happy to give our business to an Australian company .
Nice bike. I have not heard of Reid bikes yet until today. I did live in Australia for 4 years back in the mid 90's. While there, I had bought a Shogun trailbreaker mtb. The bike left me impressed with the quality of the Australian made bikes.
I pick up discarded bikes from the hard rubbish collection and restore them for less fortunate people. Recently I picked up a Reid 27.5 mtb. It had a flat tyre and a broken rear axle. $18 for an axle and a superglue / old tube patch repair later and it was back on the road. It was so nice to ride I was tempted to keep it. Someone needed it more than me so off it went. Well worth a look.
Hey Kev! Just to let you know: 31.6 diameter is considered"oversized" because everything used to be 25.6. it's just a relic of changing times, a bit like calling cleated pedals "clipless". The name just stuck so people keep using it, even if it's no longer representative of the truth! Thank you for your awesome videos and have a great day!
I live in Australia and that model is only 240US here, so i suspect that it has something to do with handling. Personally i ride a Reid Vice 3.0 and aside from some mechanical setup issues, its a great bike
It’s 430AUD (280USD) when you buy it in Australia :) just expensive due to tariffs and shipping. Thanks for the review, I brought one right after watching this haha!
Man omg I just bought this bike last week with out knowing anything about it, I look for some reviews about it and didn’t found anything until now thanks to you, thank you
Hey I just got this bike in M too im 5'10 and I love it. Was going to trek but they ran out, obviously there's a bike shortage, I got it for 500 at ny LBS but man I don't regret it. Looks darn good and rides good enough for me. Fork does rattle...
For future reference 31.8mm handlebar is 'oversized' as bikes in this pricepoint usually have thinner. And that is not a remote lockout, that is a manual, you have to manually reach down and lock it. Remote lockouts are when there is a cable leading to a lever on the handlebar.
This review is super helpful. My LBS actually carries Reid (on their website, at least) as their very cheapest MTB option and I’ve been curious about what they’re like. Also nice to see some non-ebike riding footage again! 😂
Haha in Australia that bike is just $350 aud which is only $235 USD so paying a lot for the shipping. I had the next bike up, the Reid X trail 27.5, rode a bunch of black trails on it with no problems
I'm glad to see Reid is starting to get across to the US, they have been supplying many of us Aussies with some top notch beginner to intermediate bikes for a while!
From their website they look they are a LBS brand here in the USA---right now all their dealers are in Maine and Mass that seemed to be serviced by their one US distributor in New Hampshire. This product seems very suited for the LBS market, definitely a step up from "big box" which would have slipped in more no-name components and cheapened out on some key things that are initially noticed.
Good to see mechanical disc brakes rather than hydraulics, because these are easier to work with for beginners. Now, if we add plus sized tires and thru axle. This thing can stiff to take on 6 foot jumps. After all in mountain biking, all we want is a bike strong and light to hit anything.
That was an excellent presentation for that bike I like it. I recently been on the hunt for a mountain bike and was not finding Amy at the local bikes so I did find one what did in stock of a Reid sport disc I paid $409 for it. And it seems to be a pretty good fit for me I got the extra large frame and it seems to work out just fine for me the bars are great for me. But I was just happy to find a bike it's satin sky blue I love it.
The frame looks very much like a re painted diamondback peak which is what I ride. If so it should be a good platform for a beginner and upgrade as money/trail confidence allow which is exactly what I have done with mine. Still not gone 1x yet but either that or a dropper post will be next
Reid is known in Australia as sort of low end, decent value bikes. When they first set up shop they were selling bikes that would inevitably end up in bike shops needing major services real quick and upped their quality over the years. they still sell low end, decent value bikes but they're outshined by other brands that are online-only sold like polygon / marin
I used to ride Reids bike back in the 90s.. Until his parents shipped him off to live with his grandparents because they thought we were a bad influence.. We miss you Reid.. Wherever you are..
I think they did themselves a disservice by not sending you their X-trail which is a step up for about $150 more - Altus rear derailleur - Suntour XCT suspension and a really sharp looking Shimano triple crank set that at least by sight looks much better suited for trail bombing. Add the CST tires and Quando hubs and It fits in that niche that is sorely lacking - an entry level but actual trail bike that is perfect for the beginner and had solid enough equipment to keep the bike and the rider in one piece for around $600 - Their Gravel bike isn't horrible for around the same price - Their web site is slower than molasses - wonder if that's the KevCentral effect - a lot of their bikes that are available in the USA seem to be out of stock.... hmmm
Can you do a review of the carrrera vulcan i am looking to buy itithas great specs and 500 dollors.carrera is from u.k so idk if youcan get it shipped to you.
Reid makes some really interesting bikes. They're a lot of direct-to-consumer bikes, typically VERY low-end but their ride geometry is solid. See if you can get a Reid Harrier. It's $400 AUD, which $270 USD. It has a Shimano 3 Speed internal gear hub and is made of Chromoly steel. I've been wanting to see a proper review of one of those for AGES.
This bike has potential, I think they could’ve choose a better drivetrain and a non zoom branded fork. And is it me or does the stanchions look like more travel like 120mm over 100mm. It confuses me why they choose that.
I've been ridding a Reid MTB disk Pro for 2 years now and put around 5,000 miles on it and the only things I've had to replace is the chain and tires .
I had those very same stock petals on my Giant Escape last year, and I almost lost control my bike when my foot slip off especially when it's wet when your out in the rain. So ordered some Magnesium petals from Ebay. No more slippage.
I had a Reid road bike, as I live in Australia. Chinese frames with average or above average components. Great first bike and here the price is very competitive. The US generally has more options at this price point though
Please please please check out the GT Pantera! It's 27.5+ ht with tapered head tube, 2X9 crankset, for around $500 (I got mine on sale for $450) it's available at Dick's and Sun & Ski Sports, different color variations at each store. However Sun & Ski has more of a LBS service and that's where I got mine. The upgrade possibilities are endless! What do you think?
Heads up, park bike frame 26er with 210 rear shock for 530 bucks by the name of BOARSE on Alibaba. Has the buy sample sign next to it. Highly sought after by the Whistler crowd. Calling it here, and its straight steerer for about a 1,500 dollar PARK BIKE.

It's a nice bike but the components don't quite fit the price bracket. That being said, the decent weight might indicate some improvements elsewhere. Bottom bracket might be better, and the frame itself could be nice as well
It reminds me of my 29er, brand XDS, model T-9, I purchased at a LBS I was working at a few summers, the only other place I could find XDS for sale was in Australia. The only original components left on my XDS currently are the frame and rear wheel. It was a great bicycle to build and learn what I wanted and didn't need on a MTB bike. Kev, have you ever heard of XDS or know any info about the brand? As they say down under "Cheers".

To get 25.4mm stanchions on a Suntour fork you'd need to go to the base level M3010 and those are designed for light use only. For the money here I would expect at least Suntour XCT or better like XCM or XCR non air. It really seems poor value. I've seen Reid bikes before 'durianrider' reviewed a basic Reid road bike a while back and it was fine for its price in Australia but based on this bike's spec I would of thought $300 was stretching it for price as its such a rubbish fork and the components are merely ok. I realise the fork has 100mm travel which is good but 25.4mm stanchions are not strong enough for serious use. I bought some zoom forks of Amazon warehouse when they were selling them for £8 here in the UK. I guess a fork that had been returned a few times. I'm still unsure what to use it for as the 25.4mm stanchion size is only really good enough for a hybrid bike or maybe CX road bike certainly not a true mountain bike.
While you were describing the components, I had made up my mind about what would I change right out of the box: Grips and pedals! Other than that I think that with slightly better grips and pedal the price would be ok.
Everytime I watch one of your videos I wonder how many bikes you must have stored in your garage/shed, and I'm also entertained by the videos of course.
