This tune Heliopolis is one of my favorites from Spyro Gyra. The band knows how to set a groove and swing. Just watch how they move to the beat of the music. Awesome live performance. Sorry I missed it back in 2009.
Saw them last Saturday (10/29/11) at the Yosemite Int'l Jazz Fest. Afterwards, Jay, Scott and Julio came out for the meet-n-greet and signed CDs. I told Jay that I've been listening to Spyro Gyra since "Morning Dance" which I bought at the record store clerk's suggestion back in June/July '79 when I was 18 ( I picked it up on cassette for my car).and that meeting him was a surreal moment for me. He immediately put out his hand to shake mine, smiled and said a heartfelt "Thank You." Nice guys!
I only saw SG once live in concert. They were the lead off act for a Basia concert. I think i had more fun watching and listening to them than i did Basia. It is obvious that they enjoy what they do. Thank you for the post!
This has to be one of my top 5 favorites! Look at what's going on among the players. The drummer is so tight on the beat and I love those quick cymbal grabs! Tom on keyboards looks like he's having a time of his life. This is what music is all about. The sax sounds fantastic and then the guitar solo wraps up a music score that you drool over! cool take on the classic. Tom certainly fills out the sonic spectrum even with such a small rig. I miss the 80's shows with the huge rhodes, CP80, moogs and OB's. Those were the days visually speaking. Everysound therein has to fit in 2 rentable keyboards after 9/11. Easier on the back, for sure. But man, I admit part of the fusion allure for me as a kid was all the gigantic gear, lol.
Jay is the best....Schuu is the best....Jules is the best. Jay flurries when it ias call for, and sit's back when it is called for. I don't know any virtuoeso who gives his band as much solo space as Jay does....almost as if he is challenging himself. Of course, he is always up for the challenge!! Page and Metheny have porn face too!!!
@TheAdultChild101 hey, the drummer is Bonnie Bonapart - .. we call him Bonnie B. .. a great drummer.. really.. and a real good guy.. check out my vids.. i only have one where we are talking to him.. but he is a gentleman and musician.. he has befriended my kids and i from all the times we saw them..they play around central pa. a lot in the summer.. ok, within 2 hours.. lol..
I liked this version too (esp the keyboards), but would you people having hissy fits because someone gives something you like a "thumbs down" get a life already - not everyone agrees with you about everything, waah, get over it

Yeah Tom! Wow he got tips from Jorge Dalto! I remember being enthralled by Dalto's keybboards on George Bensons Weekend in LA album, fantastic stuff!

I liked Spyro Gyra when I was 17, there's no reason to assume that young people are too ignorant to appreciate music like this.
