Joel is incredible. 1 rack 2 floor toms 1 cowbell. When a drummers decides to use 1 rack and 2 floors u know you got to know your way around the kit. I love his phrasing and the pockets he creates for latin grooves...Yeah Joel..Love you bro...
Joel is so smooth; everything he does is effortless and I listen to him play and ask myself, “How did he do that?” then do my best to emulate his effortless flow- he’s the best drummer I’ve seen and I’ve seen a lot of damned good drummers.

Here we go again with these ridiculous comparisons, which are meaningless. I'm also a huge fan of Weckl, but honestly, in terms of ability Joel is right there, but gets about 1/100th of the recognition of Dave. He is a HUGELY underated drummer!!
As someone once posted over at magic island....I would love to see the music charts on THIS one.....what a tight band...the Led Zeppelin of jazz, in that any music is fair game insofar as influencing this bands' jazz! Paul Lasecki
Spyro Gyra NEVER gambles with a drummer. A drummer who is just so so makes everything just so so. Going all the way back Lionel c o r d e w for the last 10 years before him Lee Pearson both are just absolute monsters before him it was Bonnie B before him it was Ludwig Alfonso and then Joel Richie and then Eli Konikoff it would take a minute or two to get used to the new Drummer whenever one of the old numbers left but all of them eventually being incredible musicians eventually win you over.
Wow he just does it on these drums. Spyro Gyra came to Barbados (2nd visit) for The Barbados Jazz Festival 10th anniversary. When he started to solo people were stood in amazement. I had friends wondering how he got to play the cowbell in the solo.
It' funny and amazing the cuban influence in the piano played by Tom Schumann, who I think doesn't even speak spanish. The music is indeed the universal language. Thanks Spyrogyra for this great performance
Joel is one of my top 10 favorite drummers of all time! I always wondered why he left Spyro suddenly, about a year after this performance, while the band was recording The Deep End in 2004. Jay was clearly the leader and the business mind behind Spyro. I do know when guys fight, it's usually over one of two things: women or money. It's a pity they couldn't reconcile their differences. Fortunately, we can still enjoy all these great performances.
@korglove Joel And Dave are acutally good friends and studied together :-) They also developed their setup with the second floor tom together.. actually because they also studied "The New Breed" together with Gary Chester. As Joel told med " we would often jam in crazy time signatures, and at the end Dave always won" Bottom line: Dave is technically a better man, and is a lot more aware of what he is doing. BUT Joel is in my opinion a way better groover.. his swing and pocket is immense!
Listen to the original recorded version. The bass from Cartaya and Marc Quiñones percussion made a big difference. This version is good but simply there is now authentic Latin Grrove.

I took guitar lessons from Julio Fernandez when I was in the fifth grade. He taught at a music store in Hoboken NJ.
There are a lot of really great musicians out there that don't get recognized. Let us just appreciate those that do! Joel R is the truth!
