It holds a prominent position as one of the strongest fortresses on the Deccan Plateau and was historically referred to as Rairee or Rairy fort .

Ajay, the reason why Maharashtrians adore Shivaji like a God is because he protected Maharashtra from the invading Mughals. The Tamil Chola king did not match Shivaji in this aspect. The entire Maharashtrian community is ONE in this feeling, but in Tamilnadu the Brahmins are the downtrodden community among Tamils, the non Brahmin groups suppress the harijans and similar sections. Shivaji and his clans built several forts. In Pune city we have the Shanivar wada fort and outside the city we have Sinhagad and Purandhar forts, and in Sindhudurg and Konkan areas we have a few forts like Pratapgarh and Shivneri. In Mumbai city when traveling from Sion to Chembur on the highway on your right side you can see the remnants of an old fort. Shivaji and his faithful men knew the mountainous landscape thoroughly and so they outwitted the invading Muslims. Shivaji, Sambhaji, Shahu, and the dynastic people did not allow Muslims and Christians to indulge in conversion of Hindus.
