    In this vlog, the River Thames goes on red boards after a week of stream increasing and eventually goes into flood. The flow is so strong that boat movement is not recommended, and as the water levels rise, the river breaks the bank.
    We deploy our flood defences and then hear the tragic news that a boat has sunk on our stretch of mooring. We realise that The Thames is a dangerous place to be when it floods.

    Hi Mark and Julie a couple of months ago you asked where you should moor for the winter canal or river , I said then to get your selves off the river and get on the G U canal up to Rickmansworth outside Waitrose but heyho that has not happened , The river has still two months left of flooding and you might not be able to move so I STONGLY RECCOMEND THAT YOU DIG A DEEP HOLE AND BURY YOUR ANCHOR before it is to late, and don't rely on pins or trees, Good Luck and I wish you Well .

    • @WeirontheMove
      @WeirontheMove  Рік тому

      You did tell us to go on the canals, but we wanted to experience a winter on the river, and we have loved it so far. The river flooding was always a risk we were willing to take.

    Ah but think of the fun of waking up in what was a meadow with cows licking the windows, a really new perspective for Julie to capture, I've never seen a cows tongue as art but I'm sure Julie would capture all the tiny details in a colourful way.I remember grounding on a sharp turn on the Palembang river in Indonesia.There was a village on stilts in the bend so the forecastle was adorned with rush mats and chickens scurrying all over the place.I feel really sorry for the boat owner who lost everything so thanks for the" Fund me link."
    Water water everywhere and not a drop to drink
    I'd look into that treatment system that Marina was mentioning.
    So stay safe snug and warm and take especial care because you guys are special.
    Cheers from Canada where we also are having a water problem of the solid kind, 30cms of snow in the last 24 hours.thank god someone invented snow blowers.

      Hi Ralph, we moan about the weather here but you guys get it a lot worse. The water filter systems are so expensive (3 to 6k) so that won't be an option. The guy with the sunken boat has managed to get it off the bottom of the river now and is in the process of stripping it out

    As an aspiring narrow/widebeam boater, I've been following many of you folks over there with the hopes of a taking a canal holiday in the latter half of this year.
    While I am an avid, experienced boater here on the east coast of the states (both power and sail), I know the canals are a totally different world. I've enjoyed learning from everyone over there.
    Regarding the flooding, and the challenges it presents...I wonder if you could use anchors to help keep her off the banks...? Two; one thrown off the starboard bow, the other off the stern, both thrown about 30 degrees off the beam with a generous amount of scope. Once settled on the bottom, secure tightly...but remaining watchful and ready to release more rode as the tide rises.

    • @WeirontheMove
      @WeirontheMove  Рік тому

      Someone else suggested using the anchor, but the water levels change so quickly that we fear it would create more issues than it solves. If the slack in the anchor lines and chains tightens, it could pull us under. A boat down from us sank in under 10 minutes because the lines were too tight. The canals are more benign and you don't have the issue of rising levels unless it's on a riverside section.

    Another great Seafaring Vlog ! Is this 3 years behind the mast ?
    By the way, we get packets of Salted broad beans, that you may like as opposed to kidley beans, (as I used to call them when I was younger !).
    That Baked Potato, looked Yummy ! Just how I like them. I bet the Chillie was nice. I used to make Chillie in a REALLY DEEP pot, enough to keep us going for days !
    Good job I live in Thailand, otherwise, I'd be around next week to sample yours !
    I used to work for Cookham RDC MANY years ago, when house prices were not a Crazy as they seem to be Nowadays !
    Loved the Advent Calendar ! It would be a nice idea, to mix in some Jolly pictures of your Boating friends, with their boats ! You could also make several different ones, then people could play "snap" as they opened them up !
    Assuming they got differing ones !
    Lots of Merry Japes to do next Christmas !
    Have a Great Year this year. May it be prosperous and peaceful !
    Stay safe, and un-waterlogged !

      We'll tell the lad who's boat sank in under 10 minutes that it's no big deal. Doug said so. I bet he laughed too

    Have you considered using a pole tied to your mooring lines at either end of the pole? The lines keeps you pulled in by the desired amount (as you have done - as springs is ideal), but then the poles render the lines solid, so the boat does not drift in any closer to the mooring points if the river actually floods. You just have to make sure the end of the pole at the boat end won't damage the boat. Easy to sort on a steel boat with welded in cleats.

      We used scaffolding poles to act as a barrier should we need them. Hopefully, that will be sufficient

      @@WeirontheMove I hope so. Just to note though that using them to form a solid mooring line means not having to knock them into the ground and of course not having to struggle to get them out again either. It's a bit like towing a vehicle on a solid bar because it has no brakes - so you are keep it at a constant distance at all times, in boating terms though this is boat to bank.
      We are watching for your next vlog - in the hope all is well with you, the boat and that the other issues are solved such as the postal services.

    Fast flowing tidal rivers are like the sea - looks beautiful and safe until adverse weather hits and then it's dangerous. But how else do we learn self-preservation and decide NEVER to over-winter on the Thames again! Stay safe.

      We're so glad that she loves the picture. Springs are designed to stop the boat from moving back and forth by pointing in the opposite direction to the front and back lines. Good luck with your course and boat hire.
