High resolution (to get rid of jagged stair-stepping and sparkling aliasing), bilinear filtering (to smooth out textures), and perspective-corrected texturing (to stabilize textures and get rid of that popping / swimming texture effect), along with solid 60 or 120 fps performance, would do a lot for PS1 games.
Also, most emulators let you "overclock" the emulated PS1, this helps A LOT with games with uncapped frame rates. Jumping Flash 1&2 are a good example. Combined with the enhancements you mentioned and widescreen mode, they turn into a completely new experience, a soft remaster I guess.

Meh. I used to run PS1 in high res. Super sampling with scan lines in retroarch looks better. Also... It's 2023. I've been running PS1 in high res since the late 2000's.
Lol I remember emulating ps1 on my PC around 2010 and fixing the limitations of the wobbly graphics. Glad you’re discovering a new way to play old games. Maybe you’ll build your own mini itx pc with an rtx 3060 or something extremely high end for emulation of even ps3 and switch games.
Yeah I use that alot I have started using it on my Xbox series s it works amazing upsampling to 4K is great making classic PS1 games look so much better I do the same for PS2
PCSX2 nightly build is the same thing for PS2. And if your PC is strong enough you can emulate PS3 at 4k 60fps with RPCS3, but the interface on that is very different to Duckstation and PCSX2's interface
DuckStation may have the most options for improving the graphics, but pretty much any emulator can upscale the game's resolution and make the image look cleaner.
I still preffer the original look of the games, with low resolution textures and polygon warping. Remember those games weren't made with high resolution TVs in mind, so the best way to play them is on a good CRT TV or using scanlines shaders on the emulators. Specially noticeable when playing JRPGs with pre-rendered backgrounds. If the background has a resolution limit (240p) when you put characters in 4K resolution over the low ress background it just feels off. But hey, who am I to judge players if they want to play retro games this way? It's good to have the option.
Ace Combat 3 looks absolutely gorgeous on duckstation. My computer isn't able to run it past 8x, that game is heavy. Some other games get to 16x no problems, but that one is a nope.
DuckStation is an amazing emulator. It's far better than any other open source emulator that came before. There has been proprietary in the past that had good performance, but I'm sure if I compared them against DuckStation I would discover DuckStation is both more accurate and faster.
Although I will say about the thumbnail, I prefer the lower resolution image as it hides the imperfections better, and the lines and the shading looks nicely blended and smooth in the transition an' all that stuff. I find that a lot: Where games were specifically designed with CRTs in mind, they tend to look better ON a CRT, and at a resolution befitting a typical CRT. That doesn't stop Duckstation being awesome (or it's Retroarch core, Swanstation). Another reason it's so good part from the upscaling is it's remarkably low lag-time. Other emulators such as ePSXe for example, you really feel the time delay between you pressing a button and that action being carried out on-screen. In Duck/Swanstation, that lag is minimized to the point that I can't tell the difference between it and playing any modern game natively. There are also corrective options for the bad geometry so emblematic of that gaming generation, options to overclock the 'CPU' to try to get better framerates, texture replacement where available, widescreen, the list goes on... There is, therefore, no better way to play PS1 via software emulation, that includes whatever software emulation solutions Sony themselves have offered down the years. For anyone who doesn't know software emulation very well but gets the bug from Duckstation, may I recommend the following emulators/frontends to try: Retroarch: Temperamental and will take a lifetime to fully get to grips with, but simply put is the best multicore (multi-system) emulator available, with cores for most of the popular systems (and a heck of a lot of not-so-popular systems like the 16-Bit powerhouse Sharp X68000 with it's arcade perfect versions of games like Final Fight and Streetfighter 2, and games like it's remake of Castlevania 1 which is only available elsewhere on PS1 and, I beleive, PSP) so that you don't have to get different installed apps for each system. For the systems Retroarch doesn't cover, or is not the better option for, see below. MAME: For emulating many systems, but mainly you'll be running thousands of arcade games extremely accurately. Cemu: For Wii U goodness. You can run the best version of Breath of the Wild it's possible to run, include the Native Switch version, using this emulator and various upgrades made by the community. Wanna play it in 8k, 120fps? Provided you have the hardware to pull it off, go right ahead. Dolphin: For Gamecube and Wii goodness. Excellent emulator, allows for use of Wii controller and 3D systems such as 3DTV or VR. There is a retroarch core that can be got, but you really want the standalone. Has the same kind of upscaling stuff that Duckstation has. FS-UAE: For Amiga goodness! PPSSPP: For PSP goodness, with all the same sorts of upscaling and other options available to it that Duckstation has. Wanna run God of War at 10k resolution? Go ahead, bro. Also has a retroarch core, but you may prefer the actual app (or retroarch may be fine) PCSX2: For PS2 goodness, and I believe they recently made 100% of PS2 games playable on the emulator. A heck of a milestone for such a complex console. Has a RetroArch core, but the standalone app is definitely the way to go for now. Has upscaling just like Duckstation. Some games like Gran Turismo look utterly rejuvanated at 1080p or 1440p. RPCS3: For PS3 goodness. Most of the smaller download only games work perfectly. A growing number of mainline 'disc-based' games work, most still don't. A young emulator which will improve over time as PCs get more capable. The improvement just this last 3 or 4 years has been impressive. As an exclusively PC gamer, I'm delighted that it can run me a damn-near perfect game of Fight Night Champion and NHL Legacy Edition, since neither of those titles are available to the Master Race natively. Upscaling and higher fps is possible but you gonna be needing a beefy system to run this emulator like it wants to run. You can get away with lower end hardware for sure, but this app will come into it's own in a generation or two when the hardware available is hundreds of times more powerful than the PS3. Performance is improved significantly with the latest Intel or AMD CPUs. BigPEmu: Atari Jaguar emulation has always been an issue, especially Jaguar CD with it's extensive library of like 6 games. Not anymore! ReDream: Very good Dreamcast emulation of a certain portion of Dreamcast titles, damn near perfect actually (I think it's the ones with the Windows logo that work well) but to unlock certain aspects of it such as Duckstation-style upscaling you have to pay them a one-off fee. It's not a large fee but it kinda goes against the spirit of emulation. Because of the way it runs specific games better than others, I suspect this is not based on open-source code, which may explain why the fee. Other emulator programmers ask for money too, but in the form of donations for a job well done, so this one stands out as a bit of a black sheep. Since it's not the only Dreamcast emulator available, I guess who cares, but it does seem to be the one you can best rely on to 'just do the job'. DOSBox: Runs DOS PC games like they're native, with extensive options for running as different combinations of vintage PC hardware. Run Doom on the kind of 486 you would have NEVER been able to afford back in the day! Xenia and Xemu: These run Xbox and X360 games. Xbox emulation lags behind playstation emulation considerably for whatever reason. The emulators are beginning to redress the balance but have a long road to hoe. Still, some specific games run better on Xbox emulators. I personally can get a far more stable, smoother game out of Red Dead Redemption on Xenia than I can on RPCS3, for example. Yuzu: For Nintendo Switch goodness! That's right, you can emulate Switch games on PC just about as soon as they are released in the market! To be fair, most of the really big games take a while for the emulator to run well, but they get there in the end, and quicker than anything I've ever seen. It's almost as if Nintendo themselves are running the emulator. Citra: I almost forgot. As Yuzu takes care of the Switch, so Citra takes care of the 3DS. With 3D options for those with 3DTVs or VR units, this is functionally almost identical to Yuzu, as if the same developer is running both, and is extremely accurate for such a young emulator, with very few games not working at this point, and the vast majority being at least playable enough for a satifactory gaming experience. Note that I'm speaking in terms of PC emulation. Not all the above will be available on other systems such as Xbox or Android, some will, RetroArch certainly is, others won't, others will be available but called other names, like PSCS2, I can't remember what it's called on other systems but it's right there, with it's PC-based parent's guts inside it.
@@thegreathadoken6808 I like the lower res image too, using real hardware with a retrotink using the smooth filter and an mclassic is probably what gets it to look really nice, that or a CRT, as the PS1's jagged edges were never meant to be super obvious, they were meant to be smoothed by how the CRT shows images.
There are tons of enhancements available that elevate PS1 (and almost any platform for that matter) to the next level. I've been following the emulation scene for 2 decades and it has never been more exciting. It's such a great alternative, with how insane the retro market has gotten in the past few years. It seems that these "collectors" get crazier and crazier by the day.
i think for any flat panel display you are better off with the internal upscaling that emulators can provide. i've never seen the point in spending hundreds of dollars to try to hook an NES up to a 4k tv. if you're going to play on original hardware just play on a crt. they look way better on one of those than any configuration on a flat panel with maybe the exception of a 4k oled that actually has motion sorted out (so basically none on the market right now).
Dude have you tried the widescreen hack setting? It so often works perfectly. Its magic. I have it set to a hot key to easily pop it off and on if it looks off on a particular game. Also hot key live rewind
PS1 looks totally wrong in HD, plus you can see how higher res makes the polygon edges stick out more in the thumbnail comparison, making models look like Roblox.
...Sigh. Upscaling has been possible for about 20 years now, instead, focus on the geometry correction that sorts out the lack of a Z-Buffer on the PSX and makes it feel like a Nintendo 64 (which had perspective-corrected textures and polys).
Ayoooo, I had X-men Mutant Academy 2 as a kid! Though to be fair, I don't remember much about it lol. But yeah, emulators are great. I'mma have to try DuckStation out since the last time I played PS1 games was like... with ePSXe back in maybe 2010 or something.

So the Duckstation makes your PS1 games look like they were released on a Dreamcast console with cleaner graphics.
Even better
I used to use bleem back in the day and they looked great
Thanks for being my favorite Nintendo UA-camr.
Yeah I use that alot I have started using it on my Xbox series s it works amazing upsampling to 4K is great making classic PS1 games look so much better I do the same for PS2
Oh my God! It's Stevie Richards!
MGS in thumbnail..... no MGS to be found in video.
Looks like Dreamcast games now
Oh my God, It’s Steven Richards!!!!!
thats pretty cool. whats the spec for your mini pc system for emulation?
Love the new emulation content!
This should be a series.
PCSX2 nightly build is the same thing for PS2. And if your PC is strong enough you can emulate PS3 at 4k 60fps with RPCS3, but the interface on that is very different to Duckstation and PCSX2's interface
Might need to try this on the Series X.
YOU DO!
1:45 ‘oh my gawd it’s Stevie richards!’ If you know, you know.
Please do more emulation videos! I've been doing a emulation renaissance lately!
I sold every retro console I had and focused on emulation. It's the best thing ever!
He did the same 👍🏻
On the tumb nail, I think the original looks better 😅
thats actually a great graphical upgrade compared to other emulators
DuckStation may have the most options for improving the graphics, but pretty much any emulator can upscale the game's resolution and make the image look cleaner.
Shoot thats awesome and also I remember those games hehe good times bro!
Everyones Favorite Playstation UA-camr
I still preffer the original look of the games, with low resolution textures and polygon warping. Remember those games weren't made with high resolution TVs in mind, so the best way to play them is on a good CRT TV or using scanlines shaders on the emulators.
Specially noticeable when playing JRPGs with pre-rendered backgrounds. If the background has a resolution limit (240p) when you put characters in 4K resolution over the low ress background it just feels off.
But hey, who am I to judge players if they want to play retro games this way? It's good to have the option.
Duckstation for ps1, pcsx2 for ps2 and rpcs3 for ps3 are great. Love my pc for this reason
I'm curious, where did you get the mini PC packed with emulators and such?
This is not only informative but also a good comparison. How is the inputlag? Please make more videos like this
I get what your saying. The Duckstation Enhancement option makes the game look like what you REMEMBER the game to be like.
Ace Combat 3 looks absolutely gorgeous on duckstation.
My computer isn't able to run it past 8x, that game is heavy.
Some other games get to 16x no problems, but that one is a nope.
Love duckstation running on my pc
You haven’t fixed a $hit, you just enabled an available option but advertised video as you created this feature.
DuckStation is an amazing emulator. It's far better than any other open source emulator that came before. There has been proprietary in the past that had good performance, but I'm sure if I compared them against DuckStation I would discover DuckStation is both more accurate and faster.
Would have loved to see what Soul Reaver 1 looks like when enhanced to the max
Uh-oh. The regular gamers discovered one of our great emulators. Welp, anything could happen now.
For anyone who doesn't know software emulation very well but gets the bug from Duckstation, may I recommend the following emulators/frontends to try:
Retroarch: Temperamental and will take a lifetime to fully get to grips with, but simply put is the best multicore (multi-system) emulator available, with cores for most of the popular systems (and a heck of a lot of not-so-popular systems like the 16-Bit powerhouse Sharp X68000 with it's arcade perfect versions of games like Final Fight and Streetfighter 2, and games like it's remake of Castlevania 1 which is only available elsewhere on PS1 and, I beleive, PSP) so that you don't have to get different installed apps for each system.
Also has a retroarch core, but you may prefer the actual app (or retroarch may be fine)
PCSX2: For PS2 goodness, and I believe they recently made 100% of PS2 games playable on the emulator.

I loved the fact my favorite sports looked so good. My favorite console
Someone should create a PGXP filter board to put in the PS1. Playing without "texture warping" is wonderful.
Can you make a video on your mini pc?
I’d love to know what mini pc that is did it already have all the emulators and roms??
i think for any flat panel display you are better off with the internal upscaling that emulators can provide. i've never seen the point in spending hundreds of dollars to try to hook an NES up to a 4k tv. if you're going to play on original hardware just play on a crt. they look way better on one of those than any configuration on a flat panel with maybe the exception of a 4k oled that actually has motion sorted out (so basically none on the market right now).
Can you please drop a link to the mini PC you bought? I’m definitely interested, just curious on the price point. Thanks.
Yes interested too
I'm trying this today. Thanks man 🙏🏾
Dude have you tried the widescreen hack setting? It so often works perfectly. Its magic. I have it set to a hot key to easily pop it off and on if it looks off on a particular game. Also hot key live rewind
You can get the same graphics upgrades for ps1 in the retrostation emus.
This was a very good showing of what Duckstation can do. Personally, I'm very impressed with it.
Rgt85 can you send the link of the mini pc you bought. Would like to get one myself
Duckstation can make PS1 games look so good they look like early PS2 games.
For years epsxe was the gold standard. Duckstation has surpassed it in every way possible. Amazing Emulator.
Antialiasing does help but textures are still pixelated af and the only thing that can make it looks closer to the original is the right shaders
DuckStation + steam deck = perfection
PS1 looks totally wrong in HD, plus you can see how higher res makes the polygon edges stick out more in the thumbnail comparison, making models look like Roblox.
Shoutout to Right To Censor… a wrestling stable ahead of it’s time
...Sigh. Upscaling has been possible for about 20 years now, instead, focus on the geometry correction that sorts out the lack of a Z-Buffer on the PSX and makes it feel like a Nintendo 64 (which had perspective-corrected textures and polys).
So where did you get this device at? I'd like to order one. Do you have a link?
Ayoooo, I had X-men Mutant Academy 2 as a kid! Though to be fair, I don't remember much about it lol. But yeah, emulators are great. I'mma have to try DuckStation out since the last time I played PS1 games was like... with ePSXe back in maybe 2010 or something.
Rogue Trip.....Urban Chaos....Jade Cocoon........Critical Depth.......Tunnel B1. Fight me.
It looks good on the steam deck too portable ps1 upscaled
