Realistic HO Scale Gondola Weathering | Model Railroading Tutorial
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 бер 2022
- In this video I'll show you have to weather a modern HO scale gondola using some very basic effects. We'll look at an acrylic fade, two-colour chipping and wear effects, and using an oil paint for dust effects. I'll also briefly cover application of graffiti and FRA reflective striping for the modern-day look.

DISCLAIMER: I am not paid to promote any specific products or brands; I just use the products I find work best for me through my experiences. There is no reason for me to promote a bad product, as then I would not enjoy using it, not like the result on my model, and not be proud of publicizing it in a video. There's also no point in me doing this to keep up relations with a company if the only benefit would be getting more of the same products that I didn't like. I have not used every product out there, but from what I have used, I keep using the products I like, and that's why I use them in my videos. You can use whatever other products you would like to and you can feel that they are better - that is your opinion, and is perfectly fine by me, thus I hope that feeling is reciprocated. - Навчання та стиль
It looks gorgeous. When my wife inevitably builds a layout in our basement I'm sure she will be annoyed that i expect this level of realism.
Lol thanks Adam!
Your wife??
Yeah Adam's a lucky guy
@@Panzermeister36 sure is lol
Can you do work for me? What's your contact information?
This would be one of the best weathering videos I've watched. It so refreshing to see you using artists techniques, that is, going from dark to light and using lighter tints to tone down the paint. Very well done
Good to see a young fella getting involved in model railroading and model building. Your doing a great job, keep it up!
This car definitely has stories to tell about its life in service!
Thank you for sharing with us!
From the video made like a pro director was behind you to the level of intelligence and vocabulary and thevisuals.....WOW.! PLEASE MAKE MORE OF THESE,instead of one a yearish. I wish these were 2 hours long,I have absorbed so much, you are a talent my friend, cheers Troy
Holy moly. The level of modeling accuracy on this gon is truly off the charts. While I confess to not liking graffiti, watching you delicately apply graffiti totally alters my perception. This is not just model railroading, it’s art. Brilliant work.
Thank you so much 😀
I model a time when there was no graffiti on any rail cars, so I don't do it. I use rust powder that I make by putting some 0000 steel wool (about 3 pieces) in a jar and fill it up with white vinegar. After about a month or two after it has turned to rust, I pour it out into a stainless steel 11x14 photo processing tray and wait until it all dries. Then using a single edge razor blade I pulverize it into a fine powder which I later use as rust. I use an Exacto (Aproxo) knife and make gouges in the plastic which i then fill up with my rust powder. After weathering, I use my airbrush and give a final coat of DullCoat. Looks real 'cause it is real. Cheers from eastern TN
Incredible work! The gondola looks exactly like the real thing! I can’t wait to see your layout when it’s done.
I use artists oils regularly, I use a piece of card to draw out the oil as this quickens the drying process on plastic and I've added real rust to the interior of a few gondolas from steel wool. Just leave it in a damp place for a few months! You'll get almost dust but it just has a little more substance than pure weathering powders. Superb work, I'm inspired.
Holy Sh!t. This is spectacular. Simple, do-able, and maybe I'll get close after a dozen or more attempts (that's reasonable!). Great production too.
to say you have mastered the process is an understatement.
Soooo helpful
Thank you!
I’ve never weathered and it’s one of my priorities to get everything beat up and weathered eventually.
Great techniques for even inexperienced modelers like me to try
Wow , super prototypical , there is always Haters of Graffiti , yes some is very much trash.
However there are some that are undoubtedly an Urban Art form in the modern era, rail cars the canvas.
Nice job , koodos.
Gondola's are some of the best types of freight cars and always provide interesting weathering and load options.
Definitely a great weathering job. I must of have watched this 20 times. I am collecting the materials to start this once I find the same car. No one seems to carry this Exact Rail car. Anyway there is a local train show coming to town in July. Hopefully, I find the car. Great job.
You knocked this out of the park. Thanks gor sharing.
The Gondola looks fantastic! Great weathering job! Soon you will grow tired of armor and cross over my friend . . . lol. Cheers ~ Boomer.
Thank you Boomer! I love your videos so I'm glad to see you checking out my content too :)
Best ever vid on how to make something look nastee !!!
Nice job. Graf looks great. Reality of modern railroading. Totally cements this gritty weathering.
Thank you!
Looks great. The color of the interior was very prototypical.
Thank you. Nice, straightforward techniques with amazing results.
very nice you are a master looks excellent
a masterful work of art ! best I've ever seen on !
Thank you!
One of the best for sure.. other favorites of mine are Boomer Dioramas, Dans Railroad, and Mellow Mike has some slideshows he uploaded of his own worK. Im more into Ho scale model railroading. As far as military stuff, PLASMO Plastic Models & Nignt Shift have some great stuff and along with Panzermeister they are my top 3 favourite Tank/Military modellers.
You and Dan Arnold do the best weathering I have ever seen!!!
Thank you so much Shane :)
What a result !
That was fun!! Nice work on the weathering and graffiti. Good to have you back at the bench. Take care.
Thank you Rick!
on of the simplest yet most effective how to's i have ever watched
Thank you!
@@Panzermeister36 i have several cnw coal hoppers left to weather eager to try this vs my usual methods!
An incredible “how to” video! Great explanations especially why oil & pastels.
I use brake rotor shavings which are very, very fine to sprinkle in my gons for that fine junk left behind from previous loads look. Go to your local auto parts store that turns brake rotors with an empty butter cup and ask if you can have a cup of shavings. It’s free and 1 buttercup will do a bunch of gons….
Really great video!
Please make more sharing your techniques!!
This would be a great technique on metal shipping containers too... No rail or military scene is complete without a 20ft container these days.
I can't imagine people having a problem with modelling tagging/graffiti... that's the most interesting part of modern rail cars! I've always wanted to walk a rail yard so I could get high quality photos of modern tags.
Typical Karen's lol
Man, I could totally see that gondola going down the tracks. Looks just like every one I’ve ever seen. The rust technique looks very realistic, especially around the rim of the box. I’m completely blown away, great video and tutorial.
Thank you!
WOW!!! The model really starts to come alive when you add the 2nd brown layer. (The thin brown lines) Thanks for the info..
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Very nice 👌 👍 love how the graffiti totally looked weathered
Car looks great. A really rusted out beat to hell piece of rolling stock
Just found you today, I have to say that this is some of the best weathering I have ever seen.
Great Work, Congratulations.
Very clearly explained, and a Beautiful result. The graffiti to paint by hand is already an art form. Thanks for the great inspiration
Glad it was helpful!
Great job!
Great work! Really love these techniques. Definitely will be trying it out on my own models.
Wow, very nice job... like you said some simple techniques and a few colors. You make it look so easy.
Very nice indeed. Thank you.

Thank you Gus!
Berry Goooood
Congrats on finishing uni and settling back down to the bench.
Thank you!
Excellent job and thanks for showing you techniques. Nice presentation. 👍
Glad it was helpful!
Those are wonderful weathering effects. I don't like graffiti but it certainly adds to the realism if you model our modern era.
Another great video and tutorial of the weathering on a Gondola! That thing turned out ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! I'm like you with the Tags and just looking at several from prototypes etc and w practicing a couple times it's very easy. They're not meant to read or even figure out what they mean. The Saddle Brown worked perfect on the inside. Props to you for knocking this outta the park! Thanks again for sharing your videos and look fwd to what type of rolling stock you'll be doing in September!
This is level 100 weathering. Top work 💪🏻💪🏻😁
Thank you!
This is a perfect example of why... I Don't model in anything smaller than S... Lol... Great video thanks for posting...
Exceptional!
Thank you!
You do such an amazing job, greetings from 🇲🇽 Guanajuato, Mexico.
Thank you! Cheers :)
Great job, I have not really weathered rolling stock very well, you showed me some good techniques.
Glad you enjoyed it :)
Cool! 👍
Phenomenal work and attention to detail as always. Nice job acknowledging Sumitomo Takahiro's immense
modelling talent. Thank you for sharing and inspiring us with your model tutorial.
nice work
Good Weathering
Graffiti is art. Not the Mona Lisa, but it's still art.
But Mona Lisa isn’t Graffiti. Graffiti IS art.
Love your videos. You get down to business and explain what materials you use and how to use them. No silly music or yammering about nonsense. The realism is stunning. You inspired me to try and hand paint some graffiti, and to my amazement, it wasn't that bad! LOL Thank you and please keep up the excellent work.
Thank you! I am glad your own model came out well 😊
Amazing what few colors can give you such great effects. VERY well done as usual!
Thank you Steve :)
@@Panzermeister36 Had a question about Tamiya Thinners. Tamiya X-20A thinner vs Tamiya Lacquer Thinner. Is there a reason or application to use/not use one over the other?
Lacquer thinner makes it spray better, X-20A makes it easier to do hairspray chipping.
This is an exceptionally helpful video. I really like how you explained how and why the acrylic and oil layers are used to achieve the tones you want. It’s also very helpful that you explained the alternative methods for applying the oil paint if you’re like me and can’t find the oil brushers at the local hobby supply.
Thanks again for the awesome video.
