You make me realize I value the perfection of the factory painted models over realism. And I guess I am too lazy. But boy, I enjoyed watching you do it and listening to your clear, succinct commentary. Great, great job!
Very good work. That intro shot of the locomotive was nuts! So realistic. Really like AC6000s as well. A fan of the low number boards and ditch lights. Really nice video too!
The white on the letters looks like snow it should be the yellow factory color that wood actually be under the letters as they peeled. This is a step that most people forget altogether credit to you for knowing to do it but it almost never be white. Keep up the very good work
Hi from the UK, in the video you show a can of Krylon Matte Finish but later on you talk about using "the matte finish from Testors". Just wanted to check which you normally use. As always, thanks for the video.
I don't want to disapoint you but your UP AC 6000 is in fact an AC 6044 convertable with a 4400hp prime mover. You can tell this by the bath tub exhaust stack that all AC4400s have. AC6000s have two smaller square exhaust stacks. All the same you have done a fantastic weathering job on it.
Really nice work a pleasure to watch you really did a tremendous job very well explained and a pleasure to watch stay safe and well all the best from the UK 👍👍😀
It's known as a "truck light." Sometimes in the cab of a locomotive it can be difficult to tell if you are moving or not and crew will often look out of the window to the ground for reference. The light helps illuminate the ground so the crew can tell if / how fast they are moving at night. Thanks!
Very good weathering video. I wonder if a model paint manufacturer will offer a "fade the paint" in a spray can. Like a dull coat or matte clear with a hint of white or gray color.
Is it possible could you compile a list of your most used/most recommended paints for when it comes to weathering? Trying to get into weathering and I'm at a complete loss on what paints I should get first to get my brushes wet for general weathering. Love the videos mate. ^^
I also use Krylon Matte, but I use the spray tip from a Testors Dullcoat can, and warm the can of Krylon before using (a minute or two tucked between your thighs works - sounds weird, but….). It produces a finer and less blotchy finish…
Great video! I noticed that you patched out the SP unit, and I want to try some realistic patching on my trains. Both stuff like the cleaner UP patch work, and the more rough PRLX patch work. Do you think you could do a tutorial on that sometime in the future?
AWESOME NICE VIDEO VERY INTERESTING AND INFORMATIVE. 👍😁LOVE THESE VIDEOS ALWAYS HONEST AND HELPFUL. THANK YOU FOR YOUR VIDEO AND I APPRECIATE IT AND YOU.
Josh your spray booth looks very interesting. Would like to know how it was built. It appears to be a commander tote from Lowes. Does it have a blower attached to it?
I liked how you weathered your engine, could you use white weathering powder to fade the engine and get the same as your engine if I used weathering powders and enemal washes ? Due to I don't do airbrushing. I'm also from the UK and love the American locomotives.
Thank you. I believe you can, but light weathering powder is difficult, as most of it goes away after a clear coat. I will give it a shot and let you all know how it turns out.
I was actually researching dullcote products and heard him say Testors and see on the screen it's Krylon Matte Finish. I am sitting here wondering which one or should just buy the Krylon He's using. Looks like he trusts it.
Great video, got a Baldwin S12 to detail mask and paint in the pail blue and blue stripes Amador Central 70s scheme. Though I'd first like to watch your video on the paint both you've made. Please Josh, may I have the link to it? Highly appreciated. Awesome weathering job there's around the NS, BNSF, UP and former SP plus rolling stock 👏👏👏👏 Saludos = cheers Richard 🇦🇷 Argentina
Have you tried mineral spirits for wheel and track cleaning? There has been many posts lately saying that rubbing alcohol is not a good cleaner for electrical items.
Dang, now I wanna weather my locos. Guess I should find some cheap models/shells to practice on before I go and possibly mess up my expensive BLI or MTH models
I've never weathered a loco before (yet) but I feel like I would be nervous to be wiping the powders over the grates while the shell is still on the body. Am I worrying for no reason?
I used a hobby knife to carefully cut out the door. Since it was brass, I was able to create a bend in the door and then I glued it back onto the model!
It would be awesome if you would do a video on something like this without an airbrush. For a military guy in a small room, an airbrush isn’t an option for me. I try my best to do fading with powders and paints but I could definitely use some tips from you
Previously we used Floquil, but they discontinued their Model RR Color line (I believe they still produce standard colors though). Now we mostly use enamel paints by Model Master. For brushes, we dont have a particular brand, but we purchase them at a local Hobby Town store.
Well, there is really several sides to this coin. Some want realistic weather look and some the new engine is a work of art out of the box. I wonder if it was sold new out of the box weathered the feeling would be the same.
Nice weathering job ... great vid!!! Question for you ... did you make the pipe loads for your bulkhead flat cars or did you purchase them? If you built them, what material did you use for the pipes and what did you use for the banding??? Thanks in advance!!!
Hey Josh love your videos and tutorials. The airbrush I have just doesn’t cut it. Was wondering what your set up is as I am contemplating buying a regular air compressor to use for airbrushing. Thanks for any info.
I picked up each of them for about $325 on Ebay. Now they're probably worth quite a bit more with the sound, lights, modifications, and weathering. I'm honestly not sure!
You make me realize I value the perfection of the factory painted models over realism. And I guess I am too lazy. But boy, I enjoyed watching you do it and listening to your clear, succinct commentary. Great, great job!
Great, easy to understand tutorial!
One of the best weathering jobs I’ve seen. Impressive!
Love the weathering job and the details about how you did it. Looks great!

Very impressive work. Best regards from France
This was always one of my favorite parts about this hobby. Landscape was also fun as I enjoy the finer detail of these projects.
Nice weathering with the Ex SP and the UP!
loved the weathering clip, looking forward to your next one, Stay safe you and your family
excellent tutorial I just gotta get the confidence to make a start thanks for sharing
Always enjoy your videos. I have learned a lot. Thanks and keep them coming.
Thank you Josh for the informative video.
Very nice. Great explanation on process.
Gotta say this is one of the better weathering vids I've seen. Great results. The KISS principle applies again! 👍
Hi from the UK, in the video you show a can of Krylon Matte Finish but later on you talk about using "the matte finish from Testors". Just wanted to check which you normally use. As always, thanks for the video.
Nice job as always Josh! Really enjoy you and your dad's videos!

I just saw one of thoses in my area today and all I could think of was this video because like on your model it had the doors open thanks for sharing
Very nice work.

10:54 what is the name of that safety light near the axle piece on the bottom? I love that level detail it looks extremely realistic...
coffeecat450 it’s a step light, it’s so if the crew is at a crew change at night they can see the steps and the trucks/ wheels

Phenomenal video Josh! very very helpfull!
Love that powder stuff for weathering! Use that on most of my buildings
Outstanding!! Bob
Another great tutorial
Great layout!
Looks almost like the real thing good job
Does this work for o scale as well? Great video!!
As always I love it!
Same
Thanks! - Josh
The dang Bluegrass at the end claps
Awesome video thanks for the tips
Love that SP Unit
Very good weathering video. I wonder if a model paint manufacturer will offer a "fade the paint" in a spray can. Like a dull coat or matte clear with a hint of white or gray color.
I don't know of any, but always thought that was a great idea. If I ever come across anything like that, I'll let y'all know!

Great video! I noticed that you patched out the SP unit, and I want to try some realistic patching on my trains. Both stuff like the cleaner UP patch work, and the more rough PRLX patch work. Do you think you could do a tutorial on that sometime in the future?
I also have a SP locomotive I'd like to patch for UP and weather. I'd love to see how you did it!
I came here to ask the same thing. I have a couple sp units that this would look great on. A source for the decals would be great as well!
You might through his videos. I’m thinking he did a video on that?
I've included the "patching process" as part of the SP Weathering Video, which will be out soon!
@@nsmodeler24 Looking forward to it!
And, great job on the locomotive of course.
AWESOME NICE VIDEO VERY INTERESTING AND INFORMATIVE. 👍😁LOVE THESE VIDEOS ALWAYS HONEST AND HELPFUL. THANK YOU FOR YOUR VIDEO AND I APPRECIATE IT AND YOU.
Thanks for the kind words Jim! Means a lot!
Love the Horn!
What brush do you use? I can never get the weathering powder to stick or get that much powder on the locomotive.
Amazing job👍 great voice thx
Great video! Could you show how you did the open door? Not sure of the technique or where you purchase the motor parts for the effect.
Josh your spray booth looks very interesting. Would like to know how it was built. It appears to be a commander tote from Lowes. Does it have a blower attached to it?
Super tutorial. I like :)
What is your airbrush/compressor set up?
Very cool.

What type model is your air brush, just wanted to know before ordering one.
You mention in the video testers dulecote but you show and mention the krylon brand. What do you use?

@@Foo2u2001 I use dullcoate but I know the other is cheaper. I’ll have to try it but I thought it went on a lot thicker then testors dullcote.

Ptc antena please explain or point me to a video explaining the antennas as I take it maybe these finally works with railroad signals on the layout?
I noticed on Facebook you mentioned a new layout update was coming this weekend. Was it just this or something else?
Have you tried mineral spirits for wheel and track cleaning? There has been many posts lately saying that rubbing alcohol is not a good cleaner for electrical items.
Dang, now I wanna weather my locos. Guess I should find some cheap models/shells to practice on before I go and possibly mess up my expensive BLI or MTH models
what brand of ocomotive is this because im looking into starting a n scale layout just because it smaller and you can fit alot more things into it
How did you open the side doors on the locomotive
Where you get the ice box who makes it
Thanks! I honestly cant remember where we got those. It was probably 5-10 years ago. Sorry!
I've never weathered a loco before (yet) but I feel like I would be nervous to be wiping the powders over the grates while the shell is still on the body. Am I worrying for no reason?
How did you create the open door panel and engine?
I used a hobby knife to carefully cut out the door. Since it was brass, I was able to create a bend in the door and then I glued it back onto the model!

Hi, what roof detail kit did you use on the cab roof? Cheers.
I added a 3D printed PTC antenna array purchased off of ebay
Where u get your ash powder good job on your ac6000
Awesome job!!! What type of paint and brushes do you use or recommend?
Previously we used Floquil, but they discontinued their Model RR Color line (I believe they still produce standard colors though). Now we mostly use enamel paints by Model Master. For brushes, we dont have a particular brand, but we purchase them at a local Hobby Town store.
@@nsmodeler24 Thanks for the reply.
Great job on the weathering. How did you do the open panel with the engine interior?
Well, there is really several sides to this coin. Some want realistic weather look and some the new engine is a work of art out of the box. I wonder if it was sold new out of the box weathered the feeling would be the same.

Do you know any sp dash 9's that are brass?
Hey josh , I’m an Asheville local, how much would it be for you to weather a CSX locomotive of mine ?
Hey, I'm not taking on any other work right now, but thanks for asking!
@@nsmodeler24 Can you let me know when you can? Thanks.
Hey Josh love your videos and tutorials. The airbrush I have just doesn’t cut it. Was wondering what your set up is as I am contemplating buying a regular air compressor to use for airbrushing. Thanks for any info.
What did you end up with?
How much do you want for that model I'm willing to buy it I love the fact that it has the open door on the long Hood
Do you still have scale trains dash 9 9555
Can u link the models u used in the vid plz
Thanks Nice video
Great video I will use to my channel! In spanish
What price were those locos "not combined"
I picked up each of them for about $325 on Ebay. Now they're probably worth quite a bit more with the sound, lights, modifications, and weathering. I'm honestly not sure!
Wow! That's good for a brass model. Thanks!
Hi, I love all ur videos but could u do a layout video pls
ua-cam.com/video/abld68D-FRQ/v-deo.html
You should do a Livestream
I used huge miniatures powder. It doesn't adhere. Dunno how you get it to adhere to the plastic but it doesn't using a dry paint brush.
Dark, rough paint on the top of the nose also reduces glare for the crew.
I don't like the single smoke stacks on them I like the original dual exhaust smoke stacks better.
It seems weird how making it look look dirty makes it look better
Ps could you reply?
So whenever you don't want that patched SP AC4400 anymore just let me know! lol
You forgot to add the fuel leakage
Literally real life but HO scale lol
I weathered my life lol, jk but good job
I did tho
For o second I thought that was ur first locomotive cuz it was an onion pacific you see that in your locomotive roster 😔
Ok, FGS weather that plastic car sitting at the crossing!!
