Highly informative and educative discussion. We are lucky that Dr.G N Devy has started public teaching in our time. This will help India become united as it is imagined in democracy in the true sense
A very deep and sincere man with a beautiful sense of humour and wonder. The introduction is profound asking the question do we exist or not. As an uneducated Farmers son from Ireland and having followed his footsteps also with an enquiring mind find myself in India. Thank God fate had it that I only went to intermediate level in School and was kept at home on the farm to help "educate" my 4 siblings. What a blessing to escape some of the Colonial indoctrination propounded by the English education system which dominates the World today. India must stand up high over the prison on the English language. Of course India thinks the opposite that its a route to "Freedom". Its not its the prison of " I ". "Me". "Mine" . To cut a long story short I dis covered Sanskritam in my own Country in my own Heart. This is the language of our birthright which holds the very Route back to our knowledge of whether we exist or not and the inert knowledge that's in us all. India must stand high among Nations and rise them from the quagmire of Confusion though the unifying force of Sanskritam Om Shanti Shanti Shanti
Sir very nice and i m very happy and felling proud that our university that is university of jammu make core syllabus chapter on development in our syllabus that v read the importance of languages
While I wholeheartedly support continuation of languages, traditions and cultures and the great work he is doing in this regard, I find most of the assertions outside his core area to be arbitrary and contradictory. To be fair the hostess does allude to this many times by saying something like there is no expert here to verify this.
Though the idea of turning to our own knowledge system and contributing to the global knowledge system is brilliant, the fact remains that an English literature curriculum cannot do away with English texts and a professor of English has to be well versed in English first and then Bhasha literature. English studies in India has been plagued by mediocre teachers and scholars who resort to Rasa theory, Sanskrit texts or any bhasha literature because they are not able to read English texts. Exploring and interpreting our ancient texts in Sanskrit and other languages is meaningful only when they are not soft targets for those for whom English is an alien language. I agree that everything found in English texts may not be knowledge. However, the same principle should apply when we approach texts in indian languages.
Interesting but a dominant llanguage is not necesary a homogeneic thing there is diversity on it. The diferent dialects of english the british, the caribean, the indian. Even some slangs and way of world o view are enhace. Nontheless a wide range of languages, I agree, can give diferent world's view but to benefit humanity of absorb them a lot of people has to learn them not just preserve them is has to be promoted.
Those who oppose hindi should also acknowledge china also has many languages but we know china by mandarin not english But indians live in self created english heaven By supressing their Identity of native language +hindi
