    I always take my black and white images into Silver Efex Pro 2 (still on the free version) I am thinking of purchasing V.7 so a tutorial on the possibilities within that module would be much appreciated. I admire the clarity of your channel content.

    I'd like to know how to best prepare/adjust any RAW file before bringing it into a Nik application for further processing. I'm thinking about this more for working on an image on Silver Efex, but I suppose this goes equally for the other apps/colour. Surely there's some kind of best practice to prep a RAW file before converting to TIFF for working in a Nik app?

    hello Anthony and thanks for the great tutorial on Nik 7. I am a new to Nik collection, so it's possibly something I am doing wrong. I have opened up Color Efex and added the Viveza filters. When I adjust White Balance, nothing happens until I tiggle it off and on with the check box. This seems strange to me. Do you have any ideas, please. many thanks

    I agree about Silver Efx being outstanding for B&W. Every dSLR image I edit as B&W is done in Silver Efx. Given improvements in LR over the past couple of years, I'm less impressed with the other Nik modules. I am not certain they add functionality beyond what is now built into LR.
    I've never really figured out how to best use the Sharpener modules in Nik effectively. Perhaps an exploration of that would be helpful to others, as well?

    Thanks for taking a new look at NIK! I also used it many years ago when there were few alternatives. I remember doing some pretty awesome edits, both with Silver Efex (agree it’s the best) and Color Efex. Eventually was seduced by newer plugins, even though I kept NIK/DXO up-to-date. Looking forward to your Silver Efex video. Maybe some start-to-finish edits on a few different genres-portraits, landscapes, night, street, your call!

    As someone that is technically challenged.. I would love to see someone produce a comprehensive video on how to import/export and save files between Photolab8 and Nik Collection. While there are videos on how to use Nik for altering photos… you cannot do that until you can successfully get your photos into and out of the program!

  • @Heiko_K

    One thing I noticed is that the width of the control-sliders is extremely narrow, something that really bugs me. I actually reached out to customer service but they said the UI cannot be altered and I would have to globally change the display size in my computers' settings. This is one of the main reasons why I refrain from using the software. The ability to make accurate changes is greatly reduced by this I think.

    I’ve been an enthusiastic user of Silver Effex for many years now, and will gladly watch anything you make about that. As for the others; Analog Effex some, for the film looks, and also some of the individual color filters, but I don’t think I’ve even opened the others - the sharpeners in particular. Perhaps an in depth review and analysis of those would be helpful. Thank you for all your efforts shining a light on all this complex, but exciting, software for us. 😎👍

  • @ASMPHOTO
    @ASMPHOTO 6 місяців тому

    Yes! I need to learn control points, because I miss the original control points in viveza for controling a certain area. I don’t see this in Nik 7

    • @alangauld6079
      @alangauld6079 6 місяців тому

      The Nik 7 control points(and lines and polygons and luminosity masks) allow more sophisticated selections than we have ever had before. They are truly immense and Nik 7 is the biggest update since DxO took over the product. But ironically it almost certainly spells the death of Viveza since, as Anthony shows, everything from Viveza (plus a whole lot more) is now inside ColorEfex.

    I have the original Nik that you paid $149 for. Do I have to purchase Nik Collection 7?

  • @GB-AK
    @GB-AK 6 місяців тому +2

    It looks like not much different than Lightroom. I can't see purchasing this if I already have Lightroom especially because it does not work with raw files.

    • @alangauld6079
      @alangauld6079 6 місяців тому

      Viveza is a bad example since it is similar to Lightroom. It is basically a super sophisticated dodge and burn tool. The other plugins are where you get added value. Silver Efex, Color Efex, HDR Efex, each do their own thing and especially for localised edits. Now that LR has advanced masking the difference is much less but I still find I can bring things out with Nik that LR or DxO Photolab simply can't.

    I see no point in wasting time on color editing in Nik when you already use latest Lightroom Classic which can already do all of that . Especially given that Nik cannot work on a raw .

    • @SteveAmesbury1
      @SteveAmesbury1 6 місяців тому

      I'm also scratching my head. I'm trying to work out the value of a Lightroom plugin that basically does the same thing as Lightroom, but not on RAW?

    • @alangauld6079
      @alangauld6079 6 місяців тому +1

      Lightroom is great for basic raw conversion and overall tonal and colour control. But it has nothing like the creative potential of the Nik tools. Unfortunately, this video doesn't show that. Viveza is very similar to Lightroom in what it can do, it's only when you start looking at its local adjustment masking tools that it starts to add extra value (and LR is closing the gap with its new AI selection tools now) But once you go beyond basic tonal control and start looking at the creative filters, that is where Nik shines.

    • @graham_T
      @graham_T 6 місяців тому

      Completely disagree Alan . Which version of LR Classic are you using . LR Classic local adjustments etc etc etc….no need to waste time in another app

    • @alangauld6079
      @alangauld6079 6 місяців тому +1

      @@graham_T I'm not sure which bit you disagree about? But basically, the LR selections/masks are area based so you apply the adjustment to everything within the selected area. You can feather a little and I think there is a form of luminosity masking (but I can't be sure I haven't used the latest LR, I'm mainly a DxO PL user). But Nik U-Points work on selecting by colour/tone./texture which gives an entirely different kind of mask, much more natural in its scope. It is a very primitive form of AI compared to the modern deep-learning type stuff but still valid because the modern AI is ultimately still looking for an edge, ie an area. Sometimes that's what you want (and Nik can usually do that if you want to but usually you're better in LR/PL for that kind of thing) But Nik isn't about the kind of edits you normally do in LR it's much more appropriate to compare it to Photoshop (you can do anything Nik does in Photoshop it would just take much longer). Not that Nik competes with Photoshop, it's a plugin for PS after all, there's a lot that Nik doesn't do that PS does(cropping and cloning and compositing etc). Nik just creates certain effects more easily thus saving time (and for a pro that means money).

    And there you have it. '2:09' in. '"Nik Collections does not work on RAW files"
    I have a been a NIk user from the start and they continue to ask for Upgrade payments even when one has bought the product and they state that one has a 'Lifetime Membership' (effectively)
    Currently using the last v6 version but refuse to pay the £79 for the upgrade to v 7. Even now.... NO RAW file ability!!! Come on DxO!!

    • @alangauld6079
      @alangauld6079 6 місяців тому

      You don't have to buy the upgrades. You get a lifetime license for the version you buy plus any point releases. I usually only buy every second update. But Nik 7 is a huge upgrade, the biggest Nik has done since DxO took it over. But I doubt you'll get raw processing, that's what DxO Photolab is for. Nik is about creative control, you don't need raw for that and it would have a huge impact on both the complexity and speed of the product.

      Have no idea where he got that idea. I have an older version of the NIK collection and it works perfectly on raw files. If you open your raw file as a smart object, the NIK changes are embedded in that raw smart object.
