    Thanks a lot for this excellent tutorial. I have been using Silver Efex for a while, but so far more by trial and error. This tutorial will help to reduce the errors a lot in the future.

    Great tutorial. I like to start with a image using the green, red and blue filters because each will give different characteristics. Then I bring each of those back into PS and brush them into together taking the parts of a image I like most. I flatten that image and bring that back into NIk and tweak the structure, highlights, etc.

    Excellent work and an excellent tutorial. I had the original Silver Efex before DxO bought it. I never upgraded, but this version is far more comprehensive. I'm now considering purchasing it along with PhotoLab 7.

    Excellent - I enjoy using Silver Efex Pro for my black and whites.....Using the neutral as a starting point looks a good idea instead of trawling through the presets to get a base - great Vid Dave

    Hello Dave, Wonderful video... as always. I currently have Nik Collection 5, could you tell me if Nik 6 is a big enough upgrade to put that extra $80 into? Appreciate it. Cheers mate!

    My usual starting point is neutral and then a color filter to give me the overall starting point. Sometimes I will play with the film types. I do this before I start tweaking with the sliders.

    Hi Dave, how would you compare Silver Efex with the black and white films in FilmPack6?

    • @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly
      @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly  11 місяців тому

      Film Pack 6 is great and really does a great job giving your images an authentic Film look. If you really want to craft a Black and White image, I think Silver Efex is better. Film Pack 6 now 7 is also really nice for color treatments and color Film looks. I do enjoy both products for what they can do.

    Hey Dave, did you have a promo code for this program so we can save some money on it?

  • @aaz148a
    @aaz148a 6 місяців тому

    Nik Silver Efex is a great tool, however, doing all these adjustments globally to the entire image is something I would not do. I would make certain adjustment, go back to PS and with a black mask apply the adjustment where I want them to apply. Then, on a new layer, open Silver Efex again, make other adjustment and apply where needed and finally, blend the layers.

    Hi Dave. Very good vid. I liked how you went through your steps with just the right amount of detail. My head didn't spin once. I used NIK stuff for a bit about 2010 ish when Real HDR was king. Color Efex Pro with Glamor Glow were great then. @ $149 for the collection, that gives me pause if just using silver Efex. Do you use anything else in that package? Or anyone else reading this want o chime in? Thanks - Tim

      @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly  11 місяців тому +2

      I do like Analog Efex Pro, you can get some pretty creative edits by using it. I also use Color Efex for Glamour Glow, Film emulations (they're great), I also like the Detail Extractor and the contrast filters are also great in Color Efex.

      HIDave downloaded the trial version through your link yesterday. I knew i wanted this when you said you used glamor glow. Then I watched a class on aviation photography. The instructor uses pro contrast as one of his finishing moves. He was kind enough to make and share a preset to use. It’s not a huge difference but very noticable in the details like seams and rivets . Sold I’ll but it in Jan. So much to play with and so little time. Thanks. - Tim

    The point of black and white is that you have the entire range from 0-10 so by removing the clipping on the nose you don't have a full black to white range surely?

      @TigerPaw193 5 місяців тому +1

      So if I understand you correctly, your aesthetic sense requires that all 11 luminance levels must be present in every B&W image. Dave's aesthetic sense does not. Simple difference of aesthetic preferences. There is certainly room for both aesthetic sensibilities in the world of photography, and neither can be objectively proven to be the one and only universally correct aesthetic position.
