Sociologists used "gender" to describe things that are associated with biological sex but aren't biological sex - such as gender roles, stereotypes, and other behaviors. In some cultures, it is "manly" to have a nose ring, in others wearing jewelry is considered "womanly" - these are clearly not biological, despite them being called "manly" or "womanly". Genders don't have to be binary, and clearly there are more genders than just "man" and "woman", because people literally see themselves as something other than a man or a woman! That is, by definition, a new gender.

A woman in Oregon was blocked from adopting recently bc when questioned if the child grew up & came out as trans if she would support their transition she said no. 2- There needs to be a solid way to examine or verify someone's Gender aside from self-identifying. If for example an unknown dead body is found floating in the sea, the corner can determine the person's Sex, age, ethnicity, height, weight, body shape but how is he/she going to determine Gender? Also we can't become something just because we choose to identify as such if I identified as 6'6" tall I will not become 6'6" and people will tell me no you're not, if I identified as having blue eyes it's the same thing even personality traits it's not up to us to determine! I can try to be brave but I may never be and like other things Gender needs to have a solid fool-proof criteria for determining it beyond any doubt. Until then it means nothing, and there's nothing legal or otherwise that can be based on it!

Though I'll attempt to give a clearer answer. There are people that claim they experience positive, negative and other feelings they associate with a certain gender and that those feelings can be opposite to the gender associated with one's sex. Some of those people seek surgery, a certain aesthetic etc. Some don't.
One may call that whatever they wish, though typically people call those people "trans" (if they want to be labelled as such) I'm not going to claim others don't experience those feelings, to claim so would be as irrational as claiming any other feelings don't exist. I'm also not going to disrespect their prefferences on the basis of those feelings.

I really don't understand the confusion here. Sex is biological, gender is mostly not biological. Sociologists used "gender" to describe things that are associated with biological sex but aren't biological sex - such as gender roles, stereotypes, and other behaviors.
In some cultures, it is "manly" to have a nose ring, in others wearing jewelry is considered "womanly" - these are clearly not biological, despite them being called "manly" or "womanly".
Genders don't have to be binary, and clearly there are more genders than just "man" and "woman", because people literally see themselves as something other than a man or a woman! That is, by definition, a new gender.
