This is amazing. He answered questions for nearly a hour, and probably had just played or had several stages to play on that day. Standing that long is hard on the body. I play in hour long sets. 3 or 4 in a day stress the legs and back. Not thinking of how hard it is to get food at venues sometimes. Kudos to Tony for taking this much time for questions.

Thank you for posting this video. I was at this workshop and I'm even recorded on the video asking a question at 2:55 about Tony's album, "Acoustics", which is my first experience with his music. What a thrill. I always have remembered this brief conversation I had with Tony Rice, 34 years ago. It's so cool to see that someone had it on tape.

This is the Tony I remember, and, I did know him. And that laugh. He knew he was good, but he was humble enough to give me inspiration to learn to play.

Right at the end he says "well somebody just told me I gotta go somewhere else, and it's been a pleasure talkin to ya" ... kinda gave me a chill. And just before that he said not a show goes by when his hands don't cramp and I was thinking recently how I probably couldn't perform because of that, but I guess you do what you do and darnitall. Inspiration. What a great guy.

THANKS! I was at this workshop. Thanks for showing it. It was quite the festival. Tony gave a "workshop" around this time at a bluegrass festival in Grass Valley with 15 of us sitting next to him. Someone asked about his guitar...and Tony said "Here" as he gave his guitar to the awestruck fan. Tony was very cool. He told me he admired Wes Montgomery a lot. Very nice guy.

This is a great look into the period of what was then, although unknown at the time, the Zenith of Tony’s career.
Not long after this, he had the ill-fated surgery to correct his deviated septum (and his trademark slightly crooked nose). Many who knew him believed the affects of the surgery’s aftermath began the downfall of his singing ability. That Columbia signing and the resulting record “Native American” was meant to be the start of several that would catapult Rice into the spotlight a bit more than he had ever been in his career, outside of Bluegrass and Dawg music that is.
Such a shame, and a great chest of memories this video unlocks from the minds and hearts of his fans viewing it.
    Great vid!!

I read his words about the aphasia, the loss of speech or quality thereof. He delineated between "stress" aphasia and another term I can't remember or find, stress being the one that had no fix. I guess that's what he had. I've known people who have had a surgery and whose cords were traumatized either by the intubation or extubation; they sound the same as he did during that period. Such a loss when he lost the ability to sing and such a loss on Christmas Day, 2020. Rest in Peace, Tony Rice. You impacted tens of thousands of lives.

Thanks for this I just found it. I'm an old friend. I haven't been able to keep with Toney s progress over the years. He and I lived together for a short time. He was 18 or 19 at the time. In Louisville KY. If you know how get in touch tell him I said hi and I still have my Martin and it sounds great and I really enjoyed picking in my living room.together. I still love the music. I just went a different direction.
