What Happens When You Get Arrested?

The process of getting arrested can be scary 😥 if you don’t know what will happen after you’re placed in handcuffs. If you are ever in this situation, knowing what to expect can at least ease the anxiety.
In this video, I provide a general overview of the entire arrest process from the moment you are arrested 👮‍♀️up until your first court appearance 🧑‍⚖️.
These are the steps that you’ll usually experience if you are ever arrested:
1) First, the police must have probable cause to place you under arrest. If you are arrested, you will usually be placed in handcuffs by a law enforcement officer 👮‍♀️.
2) The officer will search you after the arrest to see if you have any weapons 🔪 or property that they may have to collect from you.
3) Your property will be removed, labeled, and placed separately for safekeeping until you are released.
4) Next, you will usually be transported 🚔 to a police station.
5) At the police station you will get processed and booked. This usually requires the officer to take your fingerprint and mugshot.
6) The police may try to interview you at the police station. This is where you need to know your rights so that you don’t say anything incriminating 🤐 or anything that can be used against you.
7) You will next have to go in front of a judge 🧑‍⚖️ to see if you can be released, have bail, or be held in jail while your charges are pending. You could also get released by citation.
8) An attorney is appointed to represent you at the time a judge 🧑‍⚖️ decides whether or not you will be released. You can also hire your own attorney at any time.
9) If you are released, you will have to follow pretrial release conditions ✅.
