I love AMC! My first car was a 1977 AMX that I bought in high school in 78. I fitted it with 225-60-15 tires on all four corners( I know that sounds sad by today's standards but I was running Pirelli P7 tires when everyone else was running fat rear and skinny front.) I miss that car and am going to build another one similar to yours!
Dude, PAH-LEZE more - much more on this car! As an AMC enthusiast this is one bad-ass tasty build! My first car was a factory ordered '76 Hornet X hatchback like this one. It had a 304 V8 and although for the day was an adequate runner - NOTHING like what you've got under hood!! Wow! Would love to know details! Congrats man. Long live AMC muscle! 💪
I plan to have a ton of content on this car now that we have it back from the rebuild. EFI should be going on when we get home from Power Tour, suspension is next!

I always referred the look of it as the "dog snout." And that 390...good lord. The Hornet Hatchback lines still to this day hold up and look fresh. My philosophy on engine break-in as told to me by my engine builder in 1971 was to drive it like I intend to drive it every day. That meant a hundred miles an hour, powershifts everywhere. I've been doing that ever since. Never had a problem with an engine. Drive it like you stole it. Make sure there are no helicopters in the area.
I like it. Stands out from the hordes of Mustangs and Camaros. Me, I think I'd for something different. Instead of the V-8 I'd go with a very worked over 4.0 liter. New head built out of two Infinity V-8 heads. Or maybe Ford Windsors or LS. Punched out .060 over. 232 crank. Aftermarket rods. Oil squirters to help keep piston temps down. Pistons with floating pins. Electric water pump. Hooked up to a late model trans. Set-up with IRS. More modern front suspension. Rack and Pinion. Four wheel discs. Too bad they never did a deep skirted cross bolt aluminum block for the 4.0.

I haven't done much to my own Yellow Hornet in a decade. BUT, I do have everything now to swap in the 21-gallon gas tank, a friend has a complete axle with 3.73 gears that's been promised to me, and I have a V8 Mustang 5-speed that I want to figure out how to swap my AMC T5's top and tailshaft onto so I get a stronger trans with better ratios. After that, I'm considering fuel injection as well and maybe get my A/C working again!
@@drianashton It's surprisingly easy but every has gotten so expensive lately. I saw a pedal set on eBay for $300. Heck, I paid that 20 years ago, but I got the pedals, linkage, steering column, transmission, bellhousing.... etc. etc..
Except for the hood and wheels, ever part of the car is from stock Hornet. The flares (which I’ve now removed) are from a 77 Hornet AMX, as is the grille.
@@drianashton the one Im looking at has the 6 cylinder. Is it hard to find parts to rebuild the drivetrain? It's a really cool looking car that I don't see many up and I found one out here in CA.
Younger brother's girlfriend, had a 77 Hornet AMX in the early 80's. She and her dad pulled the tired 304 engine and auto, replaced it with a 343 and auto from a 1968 Javelin. The 343 was rebuilt with stock 10.2 pistons and the 1970 type 2, 401 cam. Cyclone exhaust headers with full 2.5 exhaust, along with Walker full flow mufflers. Edlebrock R4B and a larger Carter carburator. Rear gears were changed to 3.73 to 1. The auto trans was rebuilt with the insides from the Bog Warner model 12 that came with the 390 engine. That Hornet AMX was an absolute sleeper, excpet for the exhaust tone. Just way too much horse power for that little Hornet and the 14 in. tires. That was the way that Hornet AMX should have come from the factory, only with the 360 engine instead.
... Although perhaps not quite as cool as your car... I was fortunate enough to buy a 1973 Hornet Sportabout X Gucci edition in January of '24, this year... Running, driving, rust and dent free ! 258- I6, automatic, tilt steering, sport steering wheel, mag like wheels, roof rack, no flaws in the Gucci headliner, although it has minor separation on the drivers seat which has independent reclining front seats, oh, and power brakes with disk in front ... AMC 🇺🇸 ... I enjoyed watching your clip ... Best regards ...

Sorry, I like the looks of a stock Hornet. Your car doesn't even look like a Hornet until you see the grill.
