Thin, lightweight solar panel on wings. Small, light electric motor. As a bonus, spinning prop creates electricity, charging battery for when clouds come in. Just a layman's thoughts.

There was a version entered in a contest to fly a defined course around pylons. The school contestants used a bicyclist racer who could put a sustained energy into the flight. Every gram had to be accounted for hence no complete bicycle would have been included. I'm going by memory but I think a sustained output of 250 watts was required. Another effort was mounted to cross the English Channel.

I spent my childhood in China. The English textbook for middle school there in early 90s has a story which says a science weirdo "Uncle Wang" inventing a combo of bicycle and plane and calling it "bi-plane". This video can really make me smile.

Did they think about a gearing system? That would make things so much easier. Just step up the gearing ratio between the pedals and the propeller and you'll be able to stay airborne for as long as you want.

Bravo for this team. That is one tiny HPA.
Something as small as a 200 Watt electric motor and a 1 pound battery could get this thing up in the air for a few minutes and let the pilot learn t fly the thing. Simple pitch stabilization would save the pilot lots of energy.

Too much work for flight. A Rotax 912 and a carbon fiber propeller will get you airborne.

The longest distance ever covered by a human-powered aircraft is actually 115 km, between Crete in Santorini. The channel between France and Britain has also been crossed on a human-powered aircraft.

I want to be clear, I am not saying that what the people in this video did is insignificant - what they are doing is fantastic, and I hope their next flight is even more successful! Just because people at MIT and aerospace companies built incredible bicycle-powered aircraft doesn't mean that trying to build your own isn't worth it. Even just trying to do it sets these folks on the path to being great engineers, and they are actually getting it off the ground. Could you or I easily do that? It takes research and dedication, and they can make their inventions way better. I started learning science by tinkering in my garage, and it led me to publishing papers at major institutions. I wish them the best of luck.
