5:38 - 6:05 Even though Prufrock is well educated, wealthy, and smart, he believes that others are talking behind his back and could never understand the way he feels. So he hides his emotions never to be shown. Emotions are a lot more complicated than meets the eye. Psychological revolution with Sigmund Freud. *Note to self*
4:55 Prufrock uses lots of stream of consciousness, from a stray cat being made from the fog, to worrying about his balding hair, it shows he is worried and is not put together unlike someone portrayed in the victorian era. *Note to self*
Thanks for this lecture. Your lectures are always very clear and informative and makes me go deeper into my studies. I am very grateful for your efforts and endeavors to reach the students of literature.
This is just a theory: But did Prufrock have a reason to go to the party to do something he was afraid to do and end up not doing it because he became distracted by the woman. ; Explanation: He stopped saying "Do I dare" and also said that she made him digress.
@@michaelj.7212 stay with it! It makes more sense the more you think about it. It's hard because he adds in all these allusions and writes in a sort if stream of consciousness...he's basically describing his thought process.
Gee whizz. What a performance! Almost blew me out of my seat. Thought I was watching a yogi bear and boo boo video. If ya close your eyes that's exactly what happens. I don't think that this style of presentation does justice to the poem. This is not what Eliot meant at all, this is not what he meant, at all! I also think that your analysis is not "in depth". How can you talk of symbols without making it plausible that and why Eliot used sysmbols at all and what they were supposed to symbolize? What's the difference between symbols and metaphors or even motifs? And does Prufrock wish he ha a magic lantern? does he not rather fear to be dissected (as expressed earlier in the poem, "pinned and wriggling on the wall")? And does he really address one specific woman? Arms and shawls and skirts and whatnot: it's Woman, with a capital W, not one woman in particular. And so on. Sorry.
I just had to continue because this instructor this high pitched manic literal translation of a great poem this guy this instructor has no clue of what the hell he is talking about or what's going on with TS Eliot through the character of the crew frock it's really a standing it's also embarrassing it's Which is part of proof rock problem living in a world where people don't get it they live meaningless empty lives
I disagree with the interpretation of the mermaids. They "lure" men to envision fantasies-there is nothing positive about that [10:24]. The mermaids embody love's seductive call and its cruel inaccessibility to Prufrock, whose self-conscious male gaze reduces women to dangerous creatures or ethereal fantasies, revealing his inability to see them as human rather than projections of his desires and fears.
I love this poem and find it grossly misunderstood by everyone but whoever this guy is with his high pitched voice and he's mantic quick rendering of the poem he's so grating I had to turn him off sorry buddy I know your intentions are good like good lord man

Nice explanation. This is one of my favorites from Eliot.

But why is he named J. Alfred Prufrock? Why not John Smith?
