FILM DESCRIPTION:
Disillusioned knight Bowen (Dennis Quaid) befriends Draco (Sean Connery), the last of the dragons, and the two begin scamming village folk as Bowen repeatedly "kills" Draco for money. Bowen soon learns that Draco is the same dragon who once saved his former student, now King Einon (David Thewlis), from death by giving him a piece of his heart. Einon is now a merciless tyrant, and Bowen is compelled to stop him -- but the bond between king and dragon means if one dies, the other does as well.

When I was a kid, I confused this movie for Braveheart. My friend and I put the Braveheart VHS tape into the player thinking we'd watch a cute fun dragon movie. As that beginning scene played out with the bodies hanging from the ceiling, I was like "Don't worry man I know that dragon'll show up real soon."
Sounds like a running gag

They've made 4 sequels apparently.

Dragon Heart 3: A Sorcerers Curse

24 years later and the cgi is still holding up well, they did an amazing job
it was extremely expensive back then! This movie pushed the boundaries to show off the new advanced "DVD" format :) The soundtrack is also impressively well recorded for surround sound.
Still wish they had done a practical-animatronic dragon.
@@Kurtsg10 It was a combination of both. They had an animatronic jaw with teeth and other parts of the dragon. When he holds the man down with the claw, that's also not CGI.
No it’s not! As much as I love this movie, it doesn’t hold up. It’s Disney Dinosaur level
@@Kurtsg10 A company specialised in making animatronic actually made a practical prototype in early production and even made various screen tests, but somewhat failed - Universal didn't like it and proposed to ILM (Industrial of Light&Magic, the same team that made the dinasours in Jurassic Park) to create for them a CGI dragon. Partly, I'm glad they redesigned the dragon digitally (although it didn't age splendidly) based on Connery's features, the early animatronic model felt a bit lame and generic, design speaking.

Dragonheart is my favourite childhood movie from him
I love the way draco is able to fold up his fangs and dislocate his jaw like a rattlesnake
I'm not sure I like the retractable fangs it seems too snake like I think he should've kept those fangs out
It seems to be something all dragons can do. Several times throughout the sequels, a dragon other than Draco dislocates its jaw.
There is a quadrate bone that allows the jaws to open at a wider angle. The jaws never dislocate, otherwise the snake has no limbs to force its jaws back into place
@@joshuarosen1862 You know how dragons were depicted before the medieval times?
@@RachDarastrix2 fllying fire breathing serpents?
As cheesy as this movie is, this movie has some major strong points that are definitely missing in a lot of modern movies:
- actually witty and humorous dialogue without going overboard, instead of people trying to outmeme each other
- A "realistic" hero (becomes so cynical that he tries to scam people for gold for more than half of the film and only become virtue and selfless at the 3rd act with the help of a mentor/dragon)
- Actual battle tactics (farmers utilize guerrilla warfare to win against calvary charge)
- Sean Connery (nuff said), Dina Meyer, Dennis Quaid and Peter William Postlethwaite
- No corny love story
- Fairly natural CGI for 1996
And don't forget: A beautiful and very original premise!
If you look very closely... you can see that Draco literally lured Bowen to that spot to give him a shot in the nuts. Every so often his eyes darted down to see if he lined up.
Draco waited until Bowen was right where he wanted him. He's a clever dragon.
OMG this is my childhood film and ie. Never noticed that 😂😱😩… Draco smart af bruh
Ho damn nice catch!
I knew he was setting him up, but I never noticed the eye movements before.

For a limited CGI budget, this one is better than a lot of modern day movies
Especially how old it is
@@amannamedred7932 exactly
It wasn't limited at the time. They were going to use go-motion but it looked too fake. This was state of the art.
There's this theory I've been hearing on movie-discussion youtube channels, that poor CGI and visual effects can be overlooked if the characters and story are well-written and performed by the actors. There is also the inverse, that bad CGI and visual-effects stick out more in peoples minds if the story and acting is poorly executed.
Look at the CGI and special effects in the first two Terminator movies: A plastic Arnold-head and a CGI-liquid effect that would look dated on the Sega Dreamcast. Yet those two movies are considered well-loved classics today.

How about Raya and the Last Dragon?
We have tons of stories with friendly dragons. Some of friendly dragons are pretty brutal in their appearence (for example, Eco)
@@kunik61 Eco? Ive never heard of that dragon, what's it from?
In my opinion, this movie does the idea of a dragon being good better than other dragon movies. Drago has no desire to kill Sir Bowen and he doesn’t want Sir Bowen to kill him, he forms a truce. Sir Bowen isn’t evil because he thought Drago corrupted Einon’s heart which lead to Sir Bowen slaying dragons. King Einon and his father who I believe raised him to be bad are the real villains. I’m glad this movie didn’t do the whole “knights are evil because they slay dragons” and “dragons are evil, no good dragons.” Drago kills in self defense not for pleasure like evil dragons. It’s just satisfying to see a knight and a dragon put their differences aside and work together instead of trying to kill each other. Dragoheart is my second favorite movie about a dragon that’s good. I think How To Train Your Dragon is a little overrated yet I don’t hate it.
On the subject of good and evil, I like that the costume designers put Sir Bowen in black, a color often worn by villains, and Einon in white, a color often reserved for heroes. It's a nice visual flip of expectations.
