      @@OneStrangeJourney So I have the 2 lb tanks to hook up on each side. If I only run it for an hour and then I want to remove the tanks. Can I store them someplace and then a couple days later re connect them and use them again?? Or do I need to use the entire 2lb tank until it's empty and install a new one. Thanks!!

      @@angelamc3532 I think you mean 20lb tank and yes you can disconnect anytime you like and reconnect again. Startup sometimes takes a handful of tries because the line will be empty but other then that no issues!

    We live in a rural area and our house is setup for propane heating, but it uses so much propane that it is just too expensive to run. We setup a Big Buddy heater in the livingroom, connected to a 30lb propane tank, and a regular sized one in the back hall connected to a 20lb propane tank. These two heaters keep the house quite warm at a fraction of the cost of the built-in heater. We have carbon monoxide monitors in both locations (ones which actually show the carbon monoxide levels), and in ten years of doing this, we have never had a problem or seen any CO readings.

    • @OneStrangeJourney
      @OneStrangeJourney  7 місяців тому +4

      Exactly, I have never seen a reading on my alarm either. No one worried about using a propane stove but these little heaters seem to cause debate. They can be such a money saver and even a life saver. Thank you for the comment!

    • @carbonunit6573

      When a heater burns fossil fuels it gives of carbon dioxide. When the carbon dioxide gets pulled into the heater the flame strips off another molecule of oxygen and you get CO. These heaters don’t work on that principle as air does not get pulled through it the same way the large industrial heaters. But the CO2 levels can get extremely high causing fatigue and headaches. And the smell can be annoying. But you claim 100 percent of the heat so it’s really efficient. Add some fresh air to the mix once in a while.

    • @OneStrangeJourney
      @OneStrangeJourney  7 місяців тому +2

      @@carbonunit6573 interesting! Thank you for that info. I agree 100% to make sure you get some fresh air but your explanation really paints a picture why you should!

      If its using to much propane? Might need to look at the 10 BTU propane heaters. Them 20 and 30 BTU and up drinks the heck out of propane and need a 250 lbs. bottle > the 10 BTU can run off of a 25, to 40 lbs. tanks 👉👉 I love them! After years of using one of these indoors I was surprised to open the door and be hit with strong propane smell. The heater's regulator failed due to that residue you mentioned (I think). Now I use the filter. Another thing I learned is that if you open the 20LB tank valve to fast it can trip the regulator and you won't get much gas. It won't stay lit. Then you have to unhook everything and start over.

    • @OneStrangeJourney
      @OneStrangeJourney  7 місяців тому +11

      Really? The regulator leaked? Maybe the filter is a good idea. And you are 100% correct about opening the valve to quick. I learned that also. You have to let all the pressure out and re hook it up. Thanks for mentioning that!

      Btw, you can get combination CO & explosive gas (natural gas, propane, etc.) detectors that would warn you if something like that happened. I just replaced an old CO detector in the basement with a combo detector. That way if the gas pipes or furnaces or water heaters (it’s a 2 family house) leak, I’ll get a warning.

    I bought one of the larger units that can do up to 18,000 BTU incase my power goes out this winters.
    Just using the 1lb tanks though, bought enough to do about 30 hours of run-time on low.
    If I end up needing to use it I'll check my home air quality sensor to see how it affects the carbon / VOCs in my house, but if it isn't emitting any carbon monoxide I don't think it is going to have much of an issue.
    Planning on running it in the middle of my house next to my bathroom and I'd sleep in the tub if it got cold enough lol, my house is pretty well insulated though so probably won't have much of an issue. It's been around 25 degrees the past couple days and my HVAC heat has only been running about 5 hours in total each day running at 70 degrees. I also leave a few windows cracked just because my house is pretty tight and that is the only way to ventilate it right now.

    These can't be relied upon at high elevation (above 7,000 feet). Last I checked their "CO" sensor is really just an "O2" sensor, and when the air gets thin enough, the O2 sensor will close the propane valve. Coldest place I ever slept, -20 F in the back of a pickup under an uninsulated canopy. I put my insulated bibs between the layers and had no problems making coffee in those and a goose-down parka, with pac boots and gloves. Coleman stoves are immune to low temperatures as far as I've ever taken them.
    I brought enough bedding to be warm enough at -20 F, making a sort of snorkel out of the top of an unzipped mummy bag laid on top of me. I had multiple synthetic comforters and sleeping bags, plus that old 0-degree down-filled mummy bag and another 0-degree Slumberjack. But that heater was useless. I didn't intend to run it while asleep, but I really wanted to knock the chill off before bedding down, and I couldn't with that setup. Very disappointing.
    Just remember that if you're planning on camping in alpine areas above about 7,000 feet, from late fall to early spring.

    You're absolutely correct there's NO EVIDENCE the Buddy heaters are unsafe! I used a Big Buddy heater over 5 years while tent camping and then in my cargo trailer camper. It did however create condensation in the camper and that is my only complaint about the heater. I have since installed a diesel heater so no more condensation. I would suggest using a filter at the heater when using a #20 tank or anything bigger than a #1 tank. The Buddy heater manufacturer does suggest using a filter also.

      Did you have trouble with the little buddy since it has a regulator and your propane tank has a regulator too? I read the big buddy has 2 ports, one for high pressure and one for low pressure. But the little buddy doesn't so you have to remove its regulator to run off a large tank.

      Hmmm. I just asked this question 5 minutes ago. I’ve never used anything propane and I bought a Buddy for emergency heat. I tested it an hour with a 1 lb tank. After watching this video, I bought a 20 lb tank and the Buddy hose that doesn’t need a filter. The hose arrives today. So I started wondering how I would disconnect between using it since I won’t be running it continuously and I don’t want to leave it connected. Tks. 😊

    Good video. I have had several of them. I ended up using the filter because I was in subzero temps and the oil from the 1# can would clog the jet. I ended up destroying it when I was constantly taking it apart to clean the jet. I have the newer version in storage, havn't used it yet. Bought it a couple years ago. But you are right, you save propane using these. You can also use it to cook a meal (BTDT).

    • @OneStrangeJourney
      @OneStrangeJourney  6 місяців тому +2

      Yep I have ran into the oil issue recently and think I will use a filter also, they just never explained what you need it for. Also I have seen people flip the grate out and cook with it too. They should mod the heater and sell with that added feature.

    • @CarlKem
      @CarlKem 6 місяців тому +1

      @@OneStrangeJourneyIt is not their hose that is to blame, as has been suggested in another video. Propane is a dry gas. And when it can it will absorb the liquid hydrocarbons it is in contact with (on a molecular level), thus damaging hoses and seals. So they add a type of oil to it so it is not as prone to damage the hoses & seals. And THAT is the oil that will be a problem. You won't have this problem with most other propane appliances because of the external temperature, i.e. outside of the appliance, and the cold will make the oil gel, which is what clogs the jet. So you add a filter & it removes the oil.

    It's true that there is a built in oxygen sensor, but it does not detect CO2, which is carbon dioxide. It doesn't detect CO either, which is carbon monoxide (a deadly gas without a smell). The sensor is meant to shut off the heater when the oxygen level gets too low. Anything that burns inefficiently may produce CO or carbon monoxide.
    Without enough oxygen, it will have an incomplete burn, which could cause the build up of CO or carbon monoxide, which is deadly. That is why it has an oxygen shut off. That is why you should also ventilate the room and have a carbon monoxide alarm. Ventilating is mainly about feeding the heater enough oxygen to burn efficiently. That being said, I think its a great heater!
