Really appreciate your explaining this! You never make us feel dumb! Explained every step and why! Perfect! Again… gave confidence and did not make me feel dumb. So many explain like “I should Know that”…
TiP: I tried to hook one of these up to a 20lb tank (using the hose made by Mr Heater) the first time I needed to use it. No matter what I did i couldn't get that SOB to light!! Turns out with the bigger tank comes higher pressure and there's a safety valve in the heater end of the hose that closes if the pressure is too high. Reset it by tapping that end of the hose on the tank, or ground a few times. Then open the tank in 1/4 turns to keep the pressure down. After I learned this trick, no problems with the big tank.

Will also work on a 30 lb tank. Just make sure to get the proper regulator. I have my setup to change out between a little Buddy heater to a Coleman Titan gas stove. Really simple setup once you learn how.
Use our Mr Buddy Heater slot during the winter. Your tip on the filter is great information. I just heard about it a couple of weeks ago. Will be buying a filter. Thanks!!
Good to visually see hooking up to a tank, thanks. I bought the Mr Buddy Heater after seeing your video on them and love it! Had to use it during our ice storm here in Texas when electricity went out! I was toasty in my apartment👍.

Thank you! I was wondering why it worked without the filter but not when the filter was installed.....I didn't know about or see the clear rubber sleeve on the connector side of the filter to the heater. All fixed!!!
We used a spray bottle with dish soap with a bit more soap than you use because you can spray it directly into the threads because it's easier to do underneath a house when you gotta check several connections overhead 👍
You can detect micro leaks this way because it doesn't spray bubbles all over the pipe you're trying to inspect just a liquid. I wouldn't use your method personally because i was the guy that approved or denied a hp/lp plumbing jobs. The soap test works good imo but the industry requires a pressure gage and we filled the lines with compressed air to do leak tests just incase we did find a leak.
Did this setup this past weekend. Started sleeping in a tarp to try it out. Anyway it got down to just above freezing. First night went through 2 one pound tanks. Initially tried the 20lb but could not get it too light. Tried it again the next day and was able to get it to light. Did not wait long enough for the gas to get to the pilot light. The second night was much more comfortable as I did not have to get up to swap tanks. When tearing down the third day it seemed like it took forever for the gas to leave the hose between the tank and filter. Also had a stove fan that works with heat from the heater to turn a fan with no batteries.

Hey guy, love your walk through. I purchased a Colman stove I offered to do this conversion to the wife’s stove she ask for a second option so I went to a refillable 1# tank👍🏼
I have a Mr. Heater Big Buddy. Been going through a lot of issue. The Mr. Heater 10-foot hose is made of special material that does not leech oil so a filter is not needed. I use a filter just to be extra safe for bad propane. The issue is that with a 10-foot hose and filter not enough gas can get through to run the heater on medium and high. Had to take the filter off to get full function from the heater.
You're so awesome Cohen! Feel like you made this video just for me 😊 especially since I don't have a lot strength. Since the 20 lb tanks are heavy, is it safe to store it my living room? @ Riverside Homestead Greetings from the land of ice and snow (middle of Alaska) 😎☕️🥶 You may to cover the importance of when shopping yard sales, to explain the dates on the propane tanks! If the date is out of compliance, it will not be filled by a propane distributor unless they have the ability to re-certify the tank.
You can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that if you take the tank to one of those exchanges like at a gas station or Walmart or Home Depot, they will take any tank that you bring them as long as it's not damaged and they will put in a new brass fittings and valve and they will repaint it and make it like new. I understand that refilling the tank is cheaper than doing an exchange, but that is one way to get rid of a out-of-date tank I would believe.
Yes...this is the best way...I keep a cheap paint brush and mason jar of water/dish soap near the tank to check it for leaks when we hook up. If you just gently mix them, no shaking...then put the clear liquid on the connections...if you have a leak it will bubble but you can see exactly where the leak is because it will be the only bubbles. If you foam it up it seams like it would be harder to pin point the leak?
Thank you! I have a Mr. Buddy, but haven't tested it out yet. I will be pulling it out today and testing it. Thus far, I only have the small Coleman containers, but I'll be looking into getting what is needed for the 20 lb. container. We live in the mountains of E TN and lose power often. I need to KNOW I am prepared for several days without heat.
You should use a regulator when using a bulk tank. The pressure coming off the tank and into the hose causes oils to leach out of the hose, which clogs the filter and destroys the ceramic burners. There are some hoses that won't leach oils, but they are very costly. If you keep the hose capped between use and have a trusted supplier, you don't need a filter at all. The oil that gets into propane systems is always a result of over pressurization, sometimes, that happens at the fill station. For refilling 1 lb bottles, there are refillable bottles available, most of the single use bottles will leak within a couple of refills.
If you're just starting to see oil, there's probably no need for any serious cleaning, just vacuum the burners and pilot light, then clean the pilot light with a q-tip and rubbing alcohol. It took my oldest Big Buddy over 20 years of heavy use with a bulk tank before the oil buildup got into the burners badly enough to effect performance. I had to take the burners out and put them in my ultrasonic cleaner to get the working properly again. Usually, when a Buddy heater starts acting up, it's the pilot light. The instructions for the Big Buddy specifically states a filter is not needed if using a regulator at the bulk tank or one of the special hoses.
The hose is currently at most Walmarts look near the camping area look for the refueling adapter next to it should be the hose. 22 dollars here in Texas just the hose
I'm interested in that big buddy with the 20 pound tank. I turn down my downstairs thermostat way down at night to save energy. In the morning it takes a long time to for the furnace to bring downstairs up to temperature. The big buddy seems to have the power to heat things up quickly. Then I can shut it off and let the furnace maintain the temperature.
They make low pressure hoses for this purpose. They also make low pressure hoses to hook a tank up to those ventless propane heaters as well. They come with a built in regulator for the specific type of heater.
Yep I guess I’m a life time prepper because I plan for the worst and how to deal with it Yep I have a lot of small bottles and large ones on trailers to save transportation cost
Something to watch when replacing 20# tank. Most 20 pounders for sale in the cages at stores are only filled to 15 pounds. At least in this area I'm at. If you find a propane dealer, they usually swap or will fill yours to the full 20 pounds. That 33% more, or 25% of the capacity of the tank.
The pilot light hole gets clogged in a short time. Then it shuts off in the middle of the night. I have had the dual and 3 of the single version of these and they all clog up with a little dust if you have any pets. I bought a different version at Home Depot and it has been running every single winter night for 8 years straight. Used in the exact same way, and I clean it once a year with a compressor blower. This was both in Washington and Arizona. Good luck with this one...
Great vid man. Anyone that purchases the mr buddy 10 ft hose will not need the oil filter, it is an oiless hose. Even the stainless braided hoses on amazon have a rubber insert inside the stainless hose that contain oil. Learned the hard way and my buddy pilot got clogged with oil.
so i get about 40 hours off my 20 lb. tank on the low setting. i dont have an average for the high setting yet but it looks like i will average around 16 hours on high.

I understand that refilling the tank is cheaper than doing an exchange, but that is one way to get rid of a out-of-date tank I would believe.
@@NEW_INSITE maybe, depends on where you live. Some places are brutal on the regulations lol.
@@RiversideHomesteadLife here to help Brother.
You are my new best friend & i greatly appreciate the knowledge & tips. I have subscribed and thank you
Yes...this is the best way...I keep a cheap paint brush and mason jar of water/dish soap near the tank to check it for leaks when we hook up. If you just gently mix them, no shaking...then put the clear liquid on the connections...if you have a leak it will bubble but you can see exactly where the leak is because it will be the only bubbles. If you foam it up it seams like it would be harder to pin point the leak?
I have been thinking about getting a Mr Buddy Heater and this info is very informative:)
Glad it was helpful!
Great tricks never knew that grill did that
You can get a fitting to fill the one pound cans to, great video man.
How can I fix one I've already seen having oil in it?
They're about $20 on Amazon vs. $30 for the regular hose with disposable filter.
Perfect timing. Mine arrived today!
Perfect!
Thank you very good information
Welcome
Thank you for sharing!!
👍
I did this about 15 years ago worked great . Only mine had the fixed fitting that would not move.. The 20 pound tank runs about 36 hours
Thank you.
The hose is currently at most Walmarts look near the camping area look for the refueling adapter next to it should be the hose. 22 dollars here in Texas just the hose
Thanks Scott
@@RiversideHomesteadLife np oh yeah reg threads.. 👍
I lovd it, I'm nice warm and toasty 😊
👍
Great video, thanks.
You are welcome!
One of the best videos I havever seen
Great video.. my pellet stove went out and this will help a lot. We are going to get more bad weather. Thanks so much
They make low pressure hoses for this purpose. They also make low pressure hoses to hook a tank up to those ventless propane heaters as well.
They come with a built in regulator for the specific type of heater.
Yeah thanks for the real good info !
A lot of help here and thanks!
Good to see your hand works ok now !👍
Thanks 👍It is definitely getting stronger
Yep I guess I’m a life time prepper because I plan for the worst and how to deal with it
Yep I have a lot of small bottles and large ones on trailers to save transportation cost
Check Home Depot , you can get the propane filter for under $10
Will do!
I have a mr buddy and use the green canisters, probably cuz one is a bigger boom than the other. Paying attention.
I appreciate this video very much!!
Glad to hear!
Thanks for sharing
Thanks brother. I was spinning forever. Saved me from insanity. Earned my sub.
Great tips thanks
You're welcome!
Stress do NOT use teflon tape, or pipe dope.
so i get about 40 hours off my 20 lb. tank on the low setting. i dont have an average for the high setting yet but it looks like i will average around 16 hours on high.
I live in the UK am definitely getting one of these and am a prepper so.i watch channel so was wondering can the UK run bigger bottles of it, pleased I watched this video as never new about filter
This video really helps me out, thanks brother
No problem 👍
Excellent details.
Yezzzz, I missed out on the Costco deal 😢, but with this video I have the knowledge and confidence to lite this buddy up. TY
