/ dreamsounds
In Germany, Donald Duck is more popular than any other Disney character and the comics have introduced generations of people to Duckburg and its inhabitants. However, one of Donald’s relatives in particular is not only well known, but at one point was at the center of a criminal investigation. Let’s talk about Scrooge McDuck!

This video could not have been done without my friend Katrin, who let me interview her about growing up during the Dagobert craze. Thank you!
Here are also two sources that were incredibly helpful for both understanding the timeline - if you want more of an in-depth look, please check these out:

Correction: In this video I accidentally said Carl Banks instead of Carl Barks when talking about the Donald Duck comics. Sorry about that, not sure what happened!
I am genuinely amazed that this happened. I figured when I saw the title in the poll that it was going to be about the DagobertDucktacks, a tax law in Denmark made to specifically target the 1%, like Scrooge McDuck.
I love learning about the ubiquity of Disney in European countries. In some places in Greece, they just call all cartoons “Μικκι Μαυς”, or “Mickey Mouse”
this is a thing in Turkey too! my parents definitely grew up calling cartoons “Miki” films even if Mickey wasn’t involved
Duckberg and its lore is very sordid and interesting. One of the artists that drew the duck characters for Disney became so obsessed with the characters in his art style, that it was literally all he drew. He famously even drew raunchy duck women in states of toplessness and undress, unofficially. Duck tits WOO-OO!
I can't afford to be a patreon supporter, but I'm here as much as I can be!
Thank you for being here and watching!
@@DreamsoundsVideo as a recently out trans man and lifetime Disney fan, you are 100% one of my icons.
Carl Barks is most likely the reason Donald Duck & Uncle Scrooges popularity has stayed so strong in Germany and Northern Europe.
The Donaldist term exists in my homecountry of Sweden as well, though we call ourselves Ankister (Duckists, Anka being the Swedish word for Duck. Donalds swedish name being Kalle Anka) .
Hell, Carl Barks even has a street named after him over here. I am not making this up.
I did not know about the criminal Dagobert however, so this was an interesting story.
Have to go check out the Da Da Dagobert song now.
🎵Duck Crimes, woo-oo!🎶
Seriously though, this is absolutely wild.
da da dagobert has the same earwormy quality that ra ra rasputin has, very interesting how that works
those 2 songs are both stuck in my brain at the same time. it's a fight to the death up there and it seems as though my sanity might end up being the sole casualty...
No! Absolutely Not! The Scrooge McDuck police badge SENT ME!
And German is such a delicious language, it sounds so fantastic coming from you!
fun fact: "dagobert" went on and became a contestent of the German version of "I am a celebrity..." a few years ago. I genuinely liked him. :D
Is it any good? I know about the Uk version because of my Ant and Dec special interest
Fun fact : Dagobert is also the name of a French king who was parodied in a song during French Revolution. I wonder if the Disney translators knew it and chose the name on purpose.
I didn't know he was parodied in a song during the French Revolution! A while back when I first became familiar with the German comics I assumed Dagobert had a history in Germany or something and was surprised when a friend of mine said she never heard of that name before outside of the character. After doing some Googling we agreed that it probably came from the French king, but I didn't know exactly why. I can't find any official quotes about the naming, but it's interesting - thanks for the added context!

Holy crap, you made a video about Disney AND Berlin history, including uniquely German music referencing both those things?! I can't believe you made a video ~~~specifically for me~~~ 😂😂😂
this was a fascinating watch marlene!! i definitely consider myself to be a donaldist ! if you do end up going to that Donaldismus convention you absolutely gotta share what you see !!
OH WOW! THANK YOU for actually covering this story! I can't believe this is not as well known in the USA!
Yes please! If you have the time and cash and energy, I’ll watch all the footage you can get of a German Donald Duck Convention!
Wow! I knew Donald Duck comics were very popular in Germany, but I’d never heard of this before. Thank you for sharing this fascinating history with us!
Life really be like a hurricane here in Berlin
This instantly reminded me of a song called sarjakuva rock, which is i guess about class hierarchy in Duckburg and lost of innocence, in the song CIA bribes Goofy and it ends with singer singing "When I grow up, I'll hang Scrooge!" :'D
...also, if I had a nickel when german man tries to become an artist but ends up being violent, I would have two nickels..
Kind of ironic when you think about it. He's basically a real life Glomgold, except that his scheme actually worked, yet he's named after Scrooge who's whole thing is that he earned his money square.
Such an iconic person. Was just about to watch a documentary about him.
Also, love seeing so many patreon names in the credits!
It´s the same in Norway. We also have Donaldisme and we love the comics and the stories by Don Rosa and Barks.
Take us to DuckCon!!!!
Wow as a huge Donald Duck & Scrooge McDuck fan who currently lives in Germany and lived in Germany around the time this happened, I am so surprised I never heard of this. So interesting
That was a truly fascinating story!! Thank you for sharing :) I'm so glad that you're able to continue making videos on this channel
Please go to the DONALD convention!
finally got the time to watch this video and I loved it!! so interesting to see disney history that isn't directly directly related to walt or the parks.. I'm moving to germany in a few years and hope to be able to enjoy the donald festival!!
honestly, didn't think id see German hiphop referenced on dreamsounds.
What a wild story, thank you for sharing it! 🦆
This video made me smile so much. What a wild story!
this video absolutely made my day and I went on a huge research spree about this - thank you so much for sharing this!! this is absolutely WILD
I'd love to see the Donald Duck Convention!
I'm so glad you made this! Very interesting
Man -- pop culture is wild.
In sweden there is also the Donald duck political party haha :) they dont ever get enough votes to actually get in tho but i still love it
Scrooge McDuck on an official government worker's badge? Ehhh... I met a guy working at the DMV who had Ducktales tattoos all over his arm once. Does that count?
I can’t believe I’ve never heard about any of this 😮
I was waiting for my name in the credits and the fact thats censored made me go >:) sorry shdjgkhl great vid this was fun
this is so fucking delicious and crunchy, thank you SO much for the infodump and fingers crossed u can make it to the meetup!!
Fascinating look into this story.
This was so dope
wowza that's actually wild
Man it is true, we surely love the good Donald here in Northern Europe... but not to the point where we get inspiration for bank robberies. I really do wonder what the Donald-comics back then where like in Germany, if they just did their best to ignore all this and just handle their business, or if they tried to be proactive.
Crime where no one d*es? *gasps in American*
Amazing 😂
So interesting!
It would be amazing if you went to the D.O.N.A.L.D. convention
What’s the song during the end credits? It’s catchy!
oh wow
Please please go to the Donald Duck fandom event, I need to know more
I guess dem Erpressör war es zu schwör in the end. Maybe he should have studied Maschinenbau instead.
Omg please go!!
Go!
wow
💜💜💜💜
damn what did scrooge do this time
Damn maybe I should go into extortion
