This video is probably the single best free video ever produced for face control. All your videos are great Eric, same with Mike's but the two of you together get the info out in such a great way... Saving this one to keep this fresh in my mind for seasons to come.. Great work gentlemen.
Thanks so much Nick!!
Mike has picked the brains of the best players of golf. Including Jack. He also has the approach of keeping it natural, and not manipulating. Which is why golf is one of the most frustrating sports for people. Everyone out on the course thinks they know "the right way". You will NEVER... and I mean NEVER... learn how to golf from watching someone or learning from someone. You'll learn how to play golf, and play great golf, depending on the amount of smart effort you put into it. If you spend 3 days a week on it, 3 hours/day, good luck. It just won't happen. That's why most people on average don't get good. The real athletic folk can on that schedule, but not the average Joe. If anyone is reading this far... do not take advice from anyone in person. Watch videos of pros hitting during warmups. Then go out and apply it. Record yourself. If you can't do that, don't play golf.
Malaska is a legend.
Haha agreed!!!
I started to do this about two years ago. It took me until this year to get it down. I went from a 12 handicap to shooting scratch golf. Those of you out there that have the OLD open to closed club face swing, TRY THIS! Of course, only if you want to play better golf that is. GREAT video, keep them coming...
Love it Chris! Thank you!
Oh Eric, man sollte wirklich nur noch Deine Videos mit Malaska veröffentlichen. Die letzten waren das beste, was je veröffentlicht wurde.
Your videos been spot on lately. Exactly what I need. Thank you.
Love to hear this! Thanks for watching!
As always thanks guys for the great information!
Our pleasure John!
Excellent yet again, thank you both!
Thanks so much! Our pleasure!
Eric and Mike 3 part series is the best I have ever seen. Mike makes so much sense and Eric is able to expand on the details and summarizes perfectly! Thanks
Thank you Michael!!
Great video, you have a way of brining the best out of Mike. Great 3 part series.
Thank you!!
You guys are an awesome pair/team for teaching.
Thank you!!👊
From watching previous vids of yours I understood the position of the club face during takeaway but now physically having it explained that way with this lesson is very helpful! Thx Mike
Love it Charlie! Appreciate you watching!
This has been the best video series I’ve seen for ease of explanation and understanding. Thank you so much.
You got it Steve!
Mike and the Mechanics. Good vid Eric.
Thank you Roger!
This video is exactly what I needed as a reminder and what I am currently struggling with. Thank you for putting this out.
You got it EJ!
This could well be the eureka moment in my life. Can’t wait to try this. We have been taught wrong our whole lives. ‘Toe up’ has ruined my golf game. Awesome stuff.
Thanks Eric . Thanks Mike. Learnt lots
You got it Dan!
This video is AWESOME!! Exactly what I need...thank you gentlemen. Can't wait to go out there tmw to try it.
You got it!
Great visual with the stick!
Thanks, Derek! Great stuff from Mike!
The best & simplest explanation of the wrist movements in the downswing/release. Fantastic!
Thank you Michael!
My 2 Favorite Instructors. Love Mike’s explanation of right hand and external shoulder rotation..
Thanks,, Rick!
Awesome instruction. Mike Malaska is a great teacher.
The best! Thank you!
Two of my top five guys. Thanks 🔥
Thanks, Brandon!
Seems like nobody really talked about this stuff untill Jim Hardy came along. Kudos Jim Hardy!
Great coach
Liquid gold, pure masterclass of golf instruction, what i love about Mike's instructions are not simply about the swing, but also about joints, alignment, pressure points, all important to avoid injury, very important to a mid 60s golfer like myself, fantastic series Eric, thanks for sharing, I've saved them all for future reference
Thank you Richy! Hope they serve you well!
@9:26 the next half minute is such a “beautiful” explanation of the roles of your arms in the swing! Great video!
Thank you!!
Love the Mike and Eric combo. Mike is my fav video coach online. Guy truly gives the most simplest and realistic ways that are easy for any golfer whether beginner or weekly golfer. 💪
Thanks man! Mike is great!
Superb instruction with simple to follow tips. I will give myself a check up on the right hand and clubface position today on the range before my round! Mahalo!
Thank you Patrick!
Loved the easy explanations
Thanks, Mike! Malaska is great!
Thank you so much for this video. I've been working really hard on my ball striking the last month and this change of moving to a back and forth from rotating instantly improved my ball striking consistency leaps and bounds!
Love it!!
Clubface being at a 90° angle to your swing arc, Johnson &Koepka do this, good enough for me. Will try this! Mike has quite a handshake 😳
:)
Great video. Can’t wait to get to range
Thank you! Hope it helps!
I’m really glad you’ve made a return visit to Mike. I mention a couple years ago that his videos were never as clear to me as when he was working with you. It’s just as true this time around. Your willingness to engage some of America’s best teachers have become a compendium of the best golf videos on UA-cam.
Thanks, Greg! Mike is great!
No cap but these Mike Malaska serirs has been THE BEST instruction to date. Mike is a golf savant!!!
Agreed John---Mike is awesome!!
After 16 years of struggling with the right hand, as right hand player. This information has turned everything into a better, consistent and more stable impact. This summer will be great.
Love to hear this!
wowwowwow, this video is so helpful for me,finally made me found the solution for unstable hit, thank you guys
Love it!
Really great video
Thanks!
I can listen to Mike Malaska talk about the swing all day long
100%!
At almost 70 and physically fit, I have for years gone toe up , toe up, and have done just ok. High 30s, low 40s. Admit, too many toe shots.
I've tried Mikes method twice, and twice hit low short shots.
Wiil add, I started bowing left wrist after one of Eric's videos to keep face closed/square on backswing.
That definitely helped.
Still, I like what Mike has here and maybe I have to give it more a chance.
Thanks for watching Randell!
Can't wait to try this out at the range. I've always struggled with face control, especially with the driver, leaving it wide open on the downswing and getting a massive push slice. After a few swings trying this out at home, I found that this is a completely different feel and that I was rolling the forearms in the backswing, and not returning them to neutral coming through. I think this will be a complete game changer going forward.
Hope it serves you well, Ross!
This is the best video to explain face control of you are having issues. I just started playing this year and couldn’t get the club face square at impact. I tried the wrist rolling and I would get way too much inconsistency. Get the club face shut coming down as made a world of difference. Mike is an amazing online coach. I hope to one day get an in person lesson from him.
Love it, Matt! Agreed---Mike is one of the best!
This video is absolutely amazing I tried what Mike said it absolutely works it actually feels like the ball sticks to the face longer very buttery sticky feel 💯
Thank you Anthony!
Must say I thought Eric was the best online golf coach
But I have to bow down to Mike Malaska
This guy is awesome
:)
Thanks Eric for having Mike Malaska. Love from Indonesia.
Lets appreciate Mike with subrcibe to his channel
Thanks so much for watching!👊
This is excellent. I wasted a lot of years (and shots!) rolling through impact. The inconsistency of strike and direction drove me mad as I'm not good enough to be a pro... Working on this now and is much easier to process but will need time. Thanks chaps, great stuff as always.
Thank you Chris!! Our pleasure!
I’ve gone back and forth from the traditional “rolling” of the wrists and the way in this video and for me, rolling puts less stress on my wrists at impact than the other way. Yes, it requires more timing, in delivering the face closed at impact but I still prefer it.
Thanks for the vids with Mike Malaska!!! Next stop Mike Bender???
Thanks for watching! That'd be fun👊
Genius!!!
Appreciate it Tim!!
Relatively new to golf, but been playing seriously and been trying to get better for about a year now. I ran into so many videos about shallowing the golf club, which has then made me run into the exact issue you guys talk about at the 6:50 mark. When I try and shallow it opens my club face like crazy.
Hey Zach!
Couple of pieces involved with this....check this one you should help you
ua-cam.com/video/w9WhdAGwv6c/v-deo.html
Great video as always Eric. I have a question of when and how in the downswing do you ‘release’ that right hand. we are always told not to flip the club as this will decrease dynamic loft, so are there any drills which help with timing the release.
Hey! I answered that here:
ua-cam.com/video/bnNsbWgUjFw/v-deo.html
ua-cam.com/video/mRvj2-MKG4k/v-deo.html
ua-cam.com/video/Nwz6Yrr9SrI/v-deo.html
ua-cam.com/video/hJ5scchaRPQ/v-deo.html
The simple version is most of it happens from shaft last parallel in downswing (when hands get just below hip high through impact until like 2ft past impact)
Great video! I too feel like I need to roll my forearms to close the face for a free flowing swing, but I also know it's extremely timing based for quality shots. Trying my darndest to be more like what's shown in the video. Curious, I never heard anyone say before the lead arm grip needs to match your joint alignment. What does that mean and look like? Always heard the lead arm grip needs to match your release pattern.
Hey David! We will need to get Mike to do a video for us on it!!
gem after gem after gem...thanks guys!! Tired of pronate supinate wrist. This is way better
Thank you Paul!👊
Awesome series of videos with Mike. What course were you recording that at? Looks like Phoenix outskirts to me. Thanks again Eric!!!
Thank you! Superstition Mountain👍
I would like to hear Mike talk more about making sure the left hand grip lines up with the joints of the left arm.
Me too!
thanks so much broke my age the next day what a difference that made
Fantastic Peter!! So happy to hear this one helped!
Great
Appreciate it!
I really liked this video. One of the things I am working on right now vs. the roll that was taught. To try and get a more reliable ball consistent flight and swing. Quick question... When in the swing would the right hand hinge? At the beginning, the middle? I see many say hinge early, some say at parallel, and some say hinge late at the top. What is correct? Or does it just depend on the player and what feels best?
Hey Trevy!
It is happening really the ENTIRE backswing....mostly from the time your hands get to your right thigh to the top and then a bit more early in transition to start down
ua-cam.com/video/mRvj2-MKG4k/v-deo.html
@@CogornoGolf thank you for that clarification. I really appreciate it!
I am a very good ball striker 5 H/C but consistency was my big problem like a lot of people, I also toed up and down as described in this video because that was what I was taught over the years, I have started to work on what feels like a closed clubface take away moving my wrists as explained here and the improvement has shocked me, I have also added in the recent correct hip movement video posted by Eric and Mike and the combination of both have lead to remarkable improvement in my game with meaningful practice, I can now look forward to golf with a clear understanding. A big Thanks to both Mike and Eric very much appreciated.
Glad to hear that, Thomas! Appreciate the kind words!
Bingo.
Though I like to see it go closed to square from top, this is an excellent option.
👊Thank you for watching!
As someone who gets all out of sync and 'flippy' with he hands this is a godsend! Do the same principles apply to the driver swing aswell?
Hope it serves you well, Jordan! Same general idea for all clubs!
Eric, I was wondering are you still advocating the "face watch the camera behind you" in the backswing? That was always a great feel for me on the backswing and the downswing.
Hey Rick
YES----for those who are usually too open with face
Not everyone needs to do that but players who have face too open need to FEEL that just to get to neutral (thats the point of those videos)
Brilliant… rotating has been the cause of many players pros & ams totally becoming inconsistent or totally losing their swing… strong top hand “closed “ face the only way to go.
:)
Hey Eric, I am currently a member of Cogorno golf and this month I am working on loading the right elbow early and providing more wrist hinge to add club lag. After watching this video, it seems hinging the wrists could cause more timing issues with squaring the club. Is there a way to load the right elbow early, keeping the wrists in a similar motion described in this video, and still increase club lag??
Hey Michael!
Certainly! Its great to have private coaching to guide you (and all players) through these things. The issue is that we are all coming from different places, doing different motions an at different times. So FOR YOU .....and YOUR current swing you need more of what you mentioned.
Have no fear my friend we got ya covered in the group :)
Man, I’m really struggling with this concept. Tried on the range today and the first few strikes were pretty good. After, that I struggled with consistency. Dug the toe in the ground several times and couldn’t hit my desired distances consistently. May have to revert back to a neutral grip.
Whatever works best for ya! I would need to see your swing on video to say for sure whats going on
For ANY new motion, partial swings are best to get started. Full speed is a poor way to learn a new motion. If the partial swing isn't working, make it smaller and slower. Once you can perform it there, you can grow the swings larger and increase speed gradually. If you sense a failure, go the other way, smaller and slower. This is for any motion change.
If you have minimal right shoulder rotation( physical issue or age) is there an adjustment- grip or stance to aid good position at top- and downswing?
Hey Jack! Too many other variables to say for sure....would need to see the swing on video to say for sure. Find a good coach to work with in person to help or online at www.cogornogolf.com so I can see your swing and give you a more specific answer
How do you get more shaft lean and more dynamic loft with this throw release? GG swing tips does alot of suppination by working to get the hands over the lead foot at impact. Thanks
Im not sure what you are asking here max can you re word?
@@CogornoGolf Sorry, voice text errors. Question should have been....How do you get more shaft lean and more dynamic loft with this throw release without flipping? GG swing tips does alot of suppination by working to get the hands over the lead foot at impact. Thanks
Great video. I can see this would work well with driver, but not sure how it would help compress an iron shot. Can you enlighten me?
Thanks, Stanley! Sure--what in particular makes you think that?
@@CogornoGolf well if I wanted someone to scoop their irons deliberately, I would advise them to do exactly that kind of underarm flip with the right hand.
What about if they do it but the shaft is already forward at impact?
The TIMING is the main key ....I explain that here: ua-cam.com/video/Nwz6Yrr9SrI/v-deo.html
@@CogornoGolf Ah. That helps! Thanks
Too bad you guys don't stay near each other. If you did the combination would be unbeatable. Totally understand why you decided to give this series a re-run cause it's a few of the best videos ever made of golf instruction.
Thanks so much for the support and kind words!
I’ll be dog gone. I’m gonna have to fly out and go take lessons with this guy
👊👊
Where did Mike get that giant club head? Not available on Momentus website
Not sure!
Would this be the opposite of what Milo Lines recommends in his videos? He worked as a instructor with Mike. Milo says to have to feeling of rotating your right wrist clockwise during the downswing.
Hey max! Not sure---I think 98% of the time all of the coaches I have visited we are all looking for the same things (even though we may say it different or get there different)
Ok. I’m a little confused. A few days ago ago I stumbled upon your superb video on building a swing station with buckets ‘n sticks. It emphasizes lead arm supination. The lights went on for me, other than a concern that my timing can change day to day. But now this video with Mike M seems to entirely negate such severe rotation. Love all of your videos, Eric… but is supination something to be discouraged now???
Lol completely understand where you're coming from Don! Can be confusing watching those two. The short answer I that both ways can work.
They are different.
neither is RIGHT or WRONG but different ways---check this one out may help clear it up:
ua-cam.com/video/kvMijVAf9FI/v-deo.html
Doesn't the hand/wrist release like that promote scooping? Almost like trying to hit a flop shot? I am having this in my full swing and it's making the ball balloon. I'm not casting but releasing as talked about in this video. I do this naturally. How can I do this while keeping the ball flight lower? So the ball doesn't balloon.
Hey! The timing is key---watch this one where I explain:
ua-cam.com/video/Nwz6Yrr9SrI/v-deo.html
I think you guys could spend an hour on discussing how you approach the ball with the club during address. That alone is a killer for most people.
Hi Johnny!
Check these videos out:

ua-cam.com/video/hv_G8aG2lI8/v-deo.html
ua-cam.com/video/SwiZj4M__Lo/v-deo.html
Hope they help!👊
Mike's method of release is easier to control the clubface, of course. For mediocre athletes like me, that's the way to go. My motto for golf swing mechanics has become, "Never demand that the athlete show up to save the shot!" (Because in my case he probably won't) Thanks Mike and Eric for a great explanation!
You got it!
Resonates - weaken the grip to mitigate a left miss that was actually caused by body stalling and flipping.
:)
What's the difference between a throw release and a flip? Is it just that a flip is a throw that happens too early?
Hey John! Here are some we did to explain that:
ua-cam.com/video/kvMijVAf9FI/v-deo.html
ua-cam.com/video/Nwz6Yrr9SrI/v-deo.html
@@CogornoGolf Thanks Eric. I don't think I saw this originally. Very useful. Will watch it another couple of times over the next week or so.
Is this for driver as well?
Yes, all clubs!
Question: doesn’t this promote a fade? What if you’re a player that prefers to draw the ball or needs to?
Hey Saulo!
I would say you could hit any flight from here.
Depends some on your grip and downswing swing path
But I agree---all else equal you would expect to hit it fairly STRAIGHT from here
Doesn't this arm and wrist motion discussed in this video conflict with what is required to execute Mike's L to L drill...it seems that the L to L drill requires alot of forearm and or wrist rotation???
Absolutely not Albert. That's the point of the need for toe-down at last parallel...which should be the starting point in the LtoL. The forearms then needn't rotate at all, and the wrists just go from extension (knuckles to wrist on right hand) to (slight) flexion (I think I've got those terms right way round!)
Hi Eric I’m a keen subscriber to your channel and have enjoyed s lot of your content over the years. Recently I see you have been working with some UA-cam instructors but I am now getting s bit confused as some of these methods are flip flopping. First you show and endorse the cantered stack and tilt ie Saguto and Jesse Frank as well as another instructor Steve something can’t remember his last name. Now you working with mike Malaska whom I find is really knowledgeable but very confusing at times implementing his ideas. He advocates arms starting the swing being a Jim Flick deciple , where the stack and tilt guys are saying the body is the engine. Golf is confusing as it is so aren’t you worried you are confusing your subscribers as well? Just my thoughts thanks Leon
Hey!
Thanks for the feedback!
Nope, I'm not worried about that.
Love to have great coaches on the channel to share their thoughts and best practices.
The golfer can always decide what they want to take and leave.
Lots of ways to do it
Have a great day
@@CogornoGolf Thanks I hear you, can you tell me your thoughts on S&Tilt?
In other words, you should be able to reverse direction at any point in the swing and hit the ball.
👊Appreciate you watching, John!
Dan Shauger/Mike Austin release. This type of release is so much easier.
Excellent!
Hi Eric, do you agree with what Mike is promoting in this video? I don't see any proficient golf swings with this action that he's talking about. Maybe I'm interpreting it wrong.
Hey Nicholas! Which part in particular?
That throwaway motion he's demonstrating with his trail wrist going from extension to flexion.
The TIMING is the key
ua-cam.com/video/Nwz6Yrr9SrI/v-deo.html
Thanks for sharing.....soooo there are two "release methods" being taught.....why is that...why can't the golf teaching community agree on one method?
Hey! What community in any field all agree on something? Lol
@@CogornoGolf Lol..very true Eric...so does one just pick which they prefer or is it based upon your swing "style"?
Great lesson, however pitchers don't do extension-flexion when throwing a baseball. They absolutely use pronation. Wrong example of other sports.
Appreciate your feedback!
I like everything except can you make it relevant to current players not your personal past playing golf. Share how current players are winning using this kind of swing. Let’s see the data club speed distance etc
Thanks for the feedback Jason!
If you bowl like that, you’re most definitely bowling a 50
:)
Eric, why didn't you rebut Mr Malaska? You used to say that we never roll our forearms enough - you can't have it both ways! What about simple Physics ala AJ Boner (the club head is the bat). If flipping the right hand is correct then all clubs should be made like putters (more or less a rectangle from heel to toe), with the shaft going through the centre of gravity - which makes hitting the sweet spot 1000% easier. But that's not how the club head is DESIGNED. Please let Mr Malaska answer that. In any case, most of the pro's roll their forearms to some degree - even Mr Malaska himself, just watch it in slow motion.
Maybe for another video
Best
???....
And i want u guys to know this. They never talk about exactly which hand u have to use. just right hand? Or left hand or both?? They only talk about do not rotate ur hand. Same shit over n over again...
Thanks for your perspective!
That doesnt work at all!!!!!! If u use right wrist like that U guys will hit fat shot and no compression shot!
Bingo!! Exactly the problem I had today at the range trying this technique!
I agree. You watch any good swing in slow motion and the right wrist doesn't do what MM is talking about.
Thanks for your feedback!
