I love love love the look Dream gives Hob in the 1689 (I think?) flashback, where he *still* wants to live after 80 years of hell. I don't care what he says 200 years later, it's sooo clear how much he cares about him from that point forth

Yeah he just seems so amazed that hob still wants to live it’s suddenly like ‘oh, this person is amazing’. Plus I think he was secretly very scared hob might choose to stop living because he was already so attached to him. I just adore their dynamic it’s so so sweet

LOVE this video essay. I found this because i found the art in a google search, and saw it was a video, and I am thrilled to have sat down to play it. Not only do i love seeing the process, but the art is amazing AND you gave a SPOT ON character break down. Hob is my favorite character and I agree with everything you said about him and Dream. Well put. I have A Type too. Hob fills that for me. I'm also a huge Phil Coulson fan as well (which would be a nice video haha) but that Simple man type surrounded by Supers is always love. And I loved Hob from the comics, but they did amazing in the show. SO glad to run into this, thank you! Instant follow and time to go dive into more videos.

Hob doesn't even outlive his son *because* he is immortal. He outlives his son because his son dies young. You don't need to be immortal to outlive someone or to experience grief, and whether immortal or not, everyone must learn to deal with grief eventually. That's an even more powerful message.
Hob is (literally) close to Death. He was a soldier. His first line is "I've seen Death. Death is stupid" While he chooses not to die, he doesn't ignore death in the world, he sees it. And loves life despite it. Perhaps even *because* of death. Hob loves to see things come, change and go, which is most necessary for an immortal to keep himself up with the times. If Hob could not deal with change or death, he would not enjoy immortality. (Also remember Death is one of the most lively and cheerful characters in The Sandman. She wants everyone to enjoy their life while it lasts.)

Serious question. I was thinking of watching the sandman but I watched the first episode and half of the second episode and it didn't seem particularly interesting to me. Does it get better? And also what do people like about it? Basically I just need someone to convince me to watch it lol.

I think it does get better! The first episode is pretty slow given dream spends his entire time in a cage, and the plot then picks up from there. However it is very dark, especially around ep 4/5, do if you’re not into horror/gore it can be a little off putting although it’s very much a case where the horror works with the plot to make a better story, rather than having just been put in for the sake of it. The reason I like the show is the way all the world building and characters start to come together. The first five episodes are mostly dream, Matthew and Lucienne alone (although I love Lucienne so that’s not necessarily a criticism) and then after that it opens out more to address the wider world, the other Endless and more characters. Personally I just love the scope of this world and the way the characters exist in it.
If you need convincing and you’re not afraid of some minor spoilers, my advice would be to skip ahead to episode six and watch that, because it’s pretty stand alone, the least dark and unsettling, and introduces two of my favourite characters. It’s sort of the breather between the two halves of the season, and if you like it you can always go back and rewatch the first five after that.
That said dark fantasy is not for everyone (myself included) and sometimes a show can be really good, but just not in a genre that suits you, which parts of this show definitely are for me. You’re perfectly entitled to not like it if you don’t want to
