He literally IS in fact in the comic. In the Sandman volume "brief lives" , [*Spoiler ahead*] theres a scene where dream and delirium are on a quest to find their older brother destruction, right, so dream doesn't know how to drive. But delirium does. But delirium is ...like really young and well ...delirious. so she drunk (delirious?)drives a vintage car owned by a god who now runs a travelling agency. And Matthew the raven accompanies them because hes the only one who ACTUALLY knows how to drive. And hes screaming and yelling because they're 5 minutes away from crashing the car. On a completely unrelated note, when Matthew was a human , he died by drunk driving.
“Dreams don’t *fucking* die” was delivered so gd well.

I love how he was animated like how an actual raven would move. Corvids and parrots are able to mimic human voices with their syrynx, to the point they don’t even need to open their beak all that much. I’m guessing the beak opening and closing is a force of habit/for viewer convenience.
it's a real bird (birds) since Tom had like 4 "Matthews" around and the movement is mostly animated I believe.
They actually USED real birds as reference, and sometimes even in the actual shot. It’s pretty cool
They used real ravens and added animations to the things a raven wouldn't or couldn't do. It's really cool!

Jessamy probably was allowed to perch on Dream's shoulder as they probably had a very deep bond considering how her death pained him. Since Mathew hasn't been around for very long, it may be possible he just has to earn that perch on Dream's shoulders. ❤

I rewatched the show and he actually smiled more than I thought he did. Not a lot, but at least five times. My favorite moment was either when he reunites with Hob or when he meets Jed in his Sandman dream.
