Paul - DDEC IV came from the factory with a wastegated turbo. Often times these original turbos are replaced with a non-wastegated turbo down the road; either as a performance upgrade or just because that’s what was available when the last turbo gave up the ghost.
I drive motorcoaches with either the 12.7L S60 and 14L DDEC5 S60 engines way in the back of the bus. You cannot hear the VG turbo at all on the 14L engines, but there is no lag. I can hear the turbo whistle like crazy on the 12.7L, there is lag but it gives a mighty kick in the pants when they spool up. Is there a way to add that nice sounding 12.7L DDEC4 turbo accoustics to the 14L without messing with emissions?
texasabbott - the 12.7L sure does sing! You could absolutely put a DDEC4 turbo for on a DDEC5 truck, but you would need to have some tuning done to compensate for lack of VNT (the ECM would normally be commanding the v-pod to change the position of the VNT). While the 12.7L turbo does sound awesome, if your DDEC5 is running strong without issue, I wouldn’t revert back to the DDEC4 turbo.

Theres a link below the video for each turbo with prices and info about them. I think NEW turbos are the best, but in some circumstances, new is not available and there's only reman options. If you are buying a reman, make sure its from a reliable source.
@@terrellscaife2411No, Not necessarily, it depends on what type of turbos you're talking about. Sometimes its 15%, 25%, or 70%. Its all about availability and quality. New BorgWarner turbos tend to be 15-20% less then a new, but then you need to deal with sending your core in and you might not get a full refund if the core was damaged. Then take for example an independently remaned Holset turbo, it might be 60% less then a new Holset turbo. Then comes into question that "Not all remans are created equal". Its important that any turbo (new or reman) is assembled and balanced correctly, or it wont last long.
You can always switch back to a BW if you are having lag issues with the new turbos. Shoot me over the part number, I can help you figure out if the new turbine housing is too large and generating lag
We deleted our s60 and that baby hauls sticks pretty good with that particular turbo that came on the last models even though we’ve already replaced two turbos, two head gaskets, along with rebuilding the motor and the truck barely has half a million on it.
