This guy has a lot things backwards and a lot of just plain wrong. As a factory certified tech with almost 30 years working on the sixty series he made me laugh. Half the "problems" almost never happen. The 60 series was arguably the best engine Detroit ever put out.
You're pretty much correct. Series 60 engines usually don't have many failure points. Usually it's the turbo, air compressor, oil leaks in weird places, failed engine computer, EGR valve and, after a million miles, the cylinder head will crack (usually around 1.2 to 1.5 million miles). Usually any problems with any engine will occur if it is used enough. I think caterpillar have about two or three engines that are more reliable than the series 60 (the 3406B, the 3408, and possibly the c15), the same goes for Cummins too (the big cam 4, the K-19 engine, the vt-903 engine, to name a few). One last piece of info. Almost all engines will last longer if driven conservatively, that is in addition to being tuned to a lower power and torque rating.

I also deleted the EGR and vpod
Just got a rebuild 06 Detroit with EGR deleted wish me luck!
Good luck! I just bought a 2009 Columbia with the 60 series. It was rebuilt 6 months ago and has 65k on it. New turbo and suspension also. Wish me luck. It's my first truck!
Good luck!!
What’s your hourly rate?
Failed fuel pump hmmm series 60 fuel pumps are almost bullet proof, my budy got almost 2 mil miles on his never been replaced
What about the earliest 11.1s?
Whats the part# for the coolant pipe between the oil cooler and the water pump? Yknow, the one that replaces the EG cooler.
What is the best one to get
Series 60, get it right.
2004 to 2006 is the best
First generation good engines but with time and no Quality parts availability it's an engine of the past
There are many quality parts available for this engine
@@tonya3946 see I looked at a Freightliner Coronado with one of these engines in them and that is what scared me away I'm currently looking for one with a CAT engine because it seems caterpillar put their engines in everything so they'll have parts for the next 40 years sad that other engines don't do the same found a real nice n14 Kenworth t2000 tons of people said parts hard to find sad old engines don't have really good support
@@DavidDallas3343 there are good parts available for N14’s and for S60’s outside of the OE brands and for ISX AND FOR C15 and for DD15. You just need to go with a reputable supplier and manufacturer.
@David Dallas, manufacturing has moved on from the 60 series.
@@TATEXPRESSINC that's what I kind of figured seems like Detroit really did not have the diesel engine market share that caterpillar had back in the day I mean they put their on road diesel engines in everything besides semi trucks where I don't think Detroit did it at all and if they did nowhere near the capacity caterpillar did it I mean they still manufacture parts for diesel engines 40 years old
please price. thanks
I hated that 14 litter turbo!!!!
@Cesar Vargas, the late models, had a lot more problems than the earlier models.
I have a 60 series in a log truck in Canada the jake on it is a joke half the holding power as a cat
No egr dpf egt needed
Question detroit masters, which transmission and rear end is best for the 14.0L and 12.7L?
my uncle been driving 40 plus years and he told me for my Eaton 10 speed I need 336 gears . currently have 350 rears and was told by two mechanics 13 speed.
Each truck has a manufacturer sticker on the door jam with the tire size, gear ratio and correct driveline setup. I would recommend not changing
Hello my friend, do you need a truck mechanic technician to work with you.?
If you are going to do a article should have a real pic shows turbo on the wrong side I don't think I want these guys working on my equipment when they don't even know witch side The turbo is supposed to be on??? Seems way too many trying to be on UA-cam
I saw a 07 coronado with a series 60. For $17k
Lol
Just buy it !!!
Love my 14l
Thanks for sharing JP. 👍🏼🔧💪🏽
This dude only see glass half empty..i see 60 series half full..great truck own 3 no major problems over 8 yrs
Bull Gear for 12.7 was better
Who designed and built the series 60 Detroit engine
I DONT REMEMBER. BUT I KNOW IT WAS IN FARM TRACTORS BEFORE TRUCKS.
It’s called the John Deere engine
I remember being told the engine was designed as far back as the early 70’s. Obviously not electronic but the basic design.
This tells me bad engineers are doing trials with people's money.
Don't buy your own truck. Work for others and you won't get heart attack.
Sounds like all electric parts needed to be deleted
I feel like I'm watching a Government sponsored infomercial, it's so dry with no personality or energy
The higher you went up the ladder the more problems I see
The only good detroit was when penske owned it
You are just selling new engines
* serie 60 *
I used to drive an old 2000 sterling with a 12.7 series 60.. miss that truck..would take that truck over these piece of shit Freightliner Crapscadias with that junk DD13 any day!
Sounds like is not a good engine
The Detroit diesel is junk, it isn’t even worth making it into a boat anchor. Get a Cummins, now that is quality and reliability.
