Stef Broks is one of the most underappreciated drummers out there... and I say underappreciated not underrated because anyone that watches him can tell he's a monster
Their album Silhouettes changed my life. The whole thing is really artistic and progressive. While competent, the subsequent releases felt more like individual songs with a certain formula. Silhouettes is amongst my favorite albums of all time.
Totally agree with you, Silhouettes is my favorite album of all time. Takes me straight back to summer of 2008!! Truly an unknown gem, it’s a damn shame.
@@user-oy7gz5bf2h oh yeah, my brother got me into them all the way back in 2004 with their album Polars. I was only 13 at the time. It’s the album that got me into metal. Their first 3 albums Polars, Drawing Circles, and Silhouettes all changed my life for sure. But Silhouettes is their Magnum Opus by far!
Man I keep pingponging between Silhouettes and Drawing circles. Those two fucking bang. Although I have to say Phenotype, their last, really fucking hit me too. Great track building, some great "live" songs, blastbeats, and the final 2 songs felt like a perfect bittersweet farewell.
Dualism is one of my favourite drumming albums..... I've put in a lot of hours at the woodshed keeping up with Stef. Burning the Midnight Oil is one of the all-time great prog-rock instrumentals IMO. If you want a masterclass in prog rock drumming dynamics, that's the song.
The sad reality is that by the time this song came out the band was on their way out, and while I dont know the nitty gritty reasons, I think it might have been that they never reached the height of success they should have, at least when taking into context their 2nd and 3rd albums both are some of the best prog-metal albums ever, yet they either didnt get enough exposure, or it was a bit too early before the whole Djent movement came along and somehow dominated everywhere... That said, these guys are a hidden gem, and Im glad that in this era of access to most ever recorded music those albums have the rest of eternity to be discovered again and again....
I KNEW you'd like this one when i saw that you reacted to this! One of the best playthoughs ever! Perfection! Such feel, groove and intelligence! Cheers!
I saw Textures live with arguably their best lineup in 2008 or so. While Textures are far from my favorite band, they are the best live band I have ever seen. I'm sure it was just the intensity of being there, but every song seemed faster and they were so incredibly tight. They also looked like they were having the time of their life up on stage!
Stef is constantly creating drumlines that are both tailored to the song and freaking hard to copy. He's one of the best drummers ever, hope he gets more visibility now that his band Textures is back on tour. I'm seeing them live across the globe in June!
Wow! Dare I say if Gavin Harrison did speed metal. This may be what that accuracy and imagination would sound like. Brilliant drummer and thanks again Andrew
Yes please. Love this band. Stef has been a great one to watch when it comes to limb independence. 'Awake' is a personal favourite. A little commercial but for me it encompasses the bands catalogue well.
Such a peculiar coincidence.. just a few days ago I was listening to "Singularity" and right in the middle of the song I thought "It would be awesome if Andrew listens to this guy, his work is so great yet he is never mentioned.." and here you are! Welcome to Textures' world my friend. Nice review! Greetings from Argentina!
Hahah! Man, seriously that into! I'm laughing as I type this 🤣😂. You funny as hell!! Flawless delivery. I'm starting for the Dad Jokes and will have my coffee to go.
about that part at 5:20, that is not an overdub. He is hitting the bells of the ride and the crash, this is actually one of his trademarks in various songs. I've seen this live in London a few years ago, it was one the best concerts i have ever experienced!
I came for drums and stay for drums and dead jokes!!! Take care Andrew from N.Zealand!! Great content here dude...this left handed drummer is amazing!!!
Mate.... Do more of stef Brooks, I think I commented on this video eons ago, but you need to see more!!! As an Aussie I dare you, one of the most creative, out of control drummers ever, I still can't comprehend his byzanze lol Do it
Great pick! Been listening to Textures since 2006, unfortunatly they split in 2017. Check out their albums! Drawing Circles and Silhouettes are imo, their masterpieces.
I am not sure if you know it, but he recorded this song two times. One time playing with his left hand and the second time playing with his right hand. Just crazy !!!!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums first off, sorry for the long comment lol: Bro they’re like my fav band. I’ve been recommending them to a ton of youtubers recently. I think they deserve a little more recognition. Their polyrhythms are just perfect. A few notes: it’s considered Prog metal/djent, but it’s such a unique take on the genre in my opinion. Their most popular songs aren’t my favorite, which is kinda funny, not many bands are like that for me. All of my favorite influences mixed into one band. Definitely some funk/jazz influence in there too which is nice. All of their music (even drum groove) is programmed, mixed, and mastered by one of their guitarists “Acle Kahney”, However their performance drummer - “Jay Postones” is spectacular!! his details and little touches he adds are phenomenal. I admit, it’s kinda hard to recommend a song to start with. Most of their songs are written to be played together and they actually flow and transition into eachother in many cases. Each of their albums are quite unique from eachother. While my personal favorite album of theirs is “One”... I actually really recommend starting with “Altered State” as it is the most complete and “mesmerizing” album. It’s worth noting that Altered state has a different singer than all of their other albums. Anyways, Altered state has a great live video performance in the studio on UA-cam. It’s a play through of the first few songs on the album. Highly recommend that video for a first look into the band. Absolutely BEAUTIFUL songs on that record. Type in “TesseracT Altered State Live in the studio” and it should come up 👍
Love the bell work he did. Things like that take the experience to a new level of enjoyment for me. When you've seen someone blast beat at 200kmh a few times you've seen it, but when drummers include some "new" sound into the mix it immediately becomes interesting again. Wish more metal drummers would add a bell/cowbell or something into their setup. One of the first examples I heard was this one by Helmet/House of pain - ua-cam.com/video/YhTffL5-9d4/v-deo.html
you should check out his performance on Exivious debut. It's kind of a prog / fusion thing with a lot of jazz/fusiony drumming from Stef. Also, it's instrumental. A great album for a drummer
I'm sure that most of your subscribers are young enough to appreciate this style of music. I, on the other hand, am not. Let's just say that I prefer groups that "caress" the sound. Just the musings of a 72 year old.
I hate the fact that this guy is rarely mentioned when speaking of the most competent metal drummers. He's one of the best!
Really dug it Johnny!
Yes him and Elliot Hoffman of carbomb are the 2 that come to mind

Stef is our dutch metal drummer hero!! Thanks for sharing him 🤟😎
You got it Jaap!
There is something in every single Textures song that Stef does that will make you want to quit the drums.

Same here. Last year I could have a little bit of release with the live uploads, but still...
So glad to be exposed to all this new stuff. Killer drummer!
Can't replace them. But maybe you might like Vola. They kinda give of this textures/meshuggah vibe imo
Textures reunited and touring again in 2024

What I like with Broks is that you can hear his ghost notes and he uses dynamics and crescendo a lot in his fills.
100% Julien
I had the honor of sitting down in a practice room with Steff today. What an incredible drummer and human being he is. He deserves so much more!
OMFG YES. So damned happy you reacted to him and this band. I honestly hold Textures in higher esteem over most other popular metal bands.
