Driving this exact same model since December 2022. I had a TM3 Long Range before. I barely notice that this TMY has a "small" battery compared to the TM3 LR. It is so efficient that in 90% of the cases you won't see the difference. Only a long trips you will charge once more may be. What I am missing most is the all wheel drive but this is because I leave in the mountains with a lot of turns and slopes. On regular roads like the ones in Norway the RWD is perfect.
After having tested so many brands and models Bjorn you are the one that can really compare a Tesla to the rest of the crowd. Simply the best car and, on top of that, available !

I recently did a test drive with Model Y, compared to my Volvo V60. In my opinion, it's an awful car in terms of quality and feel. Everyone's different
@@lbtobl83250's if you do a lot of short winter trips where battery and cabin needs to heat up each time. Turn down the heating, turn on the heated wheel and seats and on longer trips you'll be getting efficiency close enough to summer ones. And what's great is that with all 5 seats heated you don't loose any of the comfort.
Yes it’s a great car I bought my wife one, she doesn’t go far and doesn’t need insane performance so it’s perfect for her. She’s getting a proper undiluted Tesla for what she does and we got it for a fantastic price. There was no sense in getting her the Long Range. Can’t recommend this car enough.

The Canadian Tesla website shows the EPA estimated range for the Model Y RWD for both the standard 19 inch wheels (394 km) and with the 20 inch induction wheels (364 km). That's about an 8% lower range with the larger wheels. I would imagine the 20 inch wheels are also heavier, which may explain why the car weighed 20 kg more than in Thailand. Given the smallish battery size, maybe ordering the larger wheels is not optimal.

Others are perhaps more premium in terms of cabin insulation or ride quality. Those things aside the Model y is currently thousands of euro's less in my country than similar specced cars from the likes of VW, Skoda, Hyundai or Kia. So for me it was an easy choice.

Bjorn, please test the car on stock 19's. Picking the 20" rims very much ruined the chance to compare really. The LR was on 19's, the BYD should probably best be on 19's as well. Hardly anyone picks 20" for the RWD as these significantly affect range.
The reason the model y performance had the same consumption was probably because it was on 18 inch rims. And in Thailand I think the asfalt is smoother too which also decreases consumption. I've noticed similar stuff when driving in the south of Europe. Already in Denmark the asfalt is smoother.
How is parking with the new model y in cities? As I understand the sensors are gone, the vision does not really work well, and there is no front camera. And how are the safety features? Does it have rear cross traffic alert and these things? They help a lot in busy carparks and stores where I am from
In my own experience it's not surprising that different tires can change consumption as much as 10wh/km. Also larger wheels can make a 10% difference in consumption. Wasn't the MY you tested in Thailand on 19in wheels, not 20in like this one? Wheel size and tires can make a big difference! I've noticed 5% or so increase in wh consumption with wet roads (depending on just wet or really wet as in downpour).
If you ever get the time I would love to see a video on the range improvements via over inflating tires on long trips. I've always been told that putting extra pressure in the tires on long trips on mostly motorways would increase range by a noticeable margin. On an EV, with the detailed kwh usage information, it could be interesting to see if that is true.
It isn't much better. And as others said, ride quality decreases and tire wear increases. Tire diameter is much more impactful than a few pounds of pressure
@@knpstrr I would expect tyre wear to decrease at a higher pressure. I fill my Model 3 tyres to 46 psi at 21 degrees and will top up when they reach 42psi have averaged 12.1 kwh / 100km over the last 10,000 kms. I have no issue with the ride at 46psi, am aware though the Model Y is probably a little stiffer.
@@bjornnyland Should have been more detailed with tip. When you navigate to a supercharger (not when charging) and car initiates precondition, turning off hvac will yield faster temp gain in HV pack. Car will divert all resource to heat up the pack instead of sharing it.
When HVAC is on and it's hot outside, AC cools the car interior and puts the heat in the battery. I have mentioned this many times before in other videos as well. So instead of having hot cabin and HVAC off, you can have nice and cool cabin *and* have warmer battery. You should try it and check the numbers in Scan My Tesla. It's even more clear in the Tesla videos from Thailand. Over there it was 35-38°C outside and the car was getting "free" battery preheating by moving heat from the cabin into the battery during driving. The car didn't even have to preheat before fast charging.

07:40 Even my Becker car radio in 2004 showed elevation. Now I use my smartphone for navigation MapFactor navigator, because it is Off-line, 7 GB cards on the micro-SD card, shows elevation and speed limits. Google Maps shows no elevation and no speed limits. Sometimes I drive with navigation where I already know the way and am surprised by new 30 km/h speed limits. BTW just called today Tesla Salzburg for a test drive of a Y RWD.
Hi. I have recieved my model Y SR. I do all my trips in the city and it appears that I have a 160 consumption. This is great but I don t seem to make more than 200km in the city. I checked the consumption on climate control is not above 1%. Cabin overheat is turned off. Sentry mode is activated for short periods only when I need it. My question now is: Why I have so low milage on one charge? I calculated with my consumption at least 300km but I manage to make a little over 200. I am not an aggressive driver my car is only in Chill mode but I am not driving with one pedal. I use the Roll feature. Do you guys have any ideea? Thanks

What I'm wondering about is the comparison with the Model 3 60 kWh (line above your spreadsheet), in theory they have the same battery capacity but yet you only got 54.0 kWh out of the model 3 versus 57.4. Both are basically new I believe. If the model 3 had made 57.4 available it would have gone 480km (which is a lot closer to the WLTP 491). I'm wondering if it was a software calibration thing, different battery management algorithm or if, in fact, the batteries are not the same.

I would love a tesla model Y. Unfortunately I need a 360 degree aerial camera as when parking at home cats try to run under the car. My 2013 Leaf has it, tesla doesn’t which is surprising.
The only car have less range in Sunday driving then wltp are Tesla and Hongqi. That mean Tesla wltp is not realistic, that's not a little point. Many cars have 15 to 20% more range in Sunday driving as wltp. I think that's one of the more interesting type of test you do. The real range versus wltp.
So many positive elements but no USS is a dealbreaker IMO. No sensors or similar functionality in 2023 is disappointing for what is suppose to be the leading (tech) car manufacturer.

A more accurate comparison would be the MYP test on 21 inches since there's no difference between Model Y LR and Model Y Performance when it comes to efficiency, it's just about tire size. And on 21 inches it did 205. And the Enyaq did 212 not 215....
Can i ask some european owners about the quality of the EU teslas? I ma from Bulgaria and we still do not have Tesla in Bulgaria so i am was thinking about buying the Model Y. But what is stopping me is the low quality of teslas in the past.
Does this RWD have matrix headlights? I‘m convinced my RWD had them, I think I can make out pixels, the headlight spread is so much wider, fuller and brighter than the LED lights in my 2019 M3 LR and the headlights display TESLA when I play the Easter egg light show.
So same efficiency as a Skoda Enyaq with 4wd, 21 inch wheels, 340kg more weight and a cod of 0.27. Hmmm, Tesla drive train seems to be pretty inefficient.
@@bjornnyland That's with 235mm tires and 18 inch wheels and it's still 240kg lighter and much more aerodynamic than the Skoda. Tesla is maximizing efficiency by doing a lot of compromises on weight and aero. I think the drive train itself is not very efficient but that's difficult to verify. Maybe add 4 people and an extra spoiler on the model Y to test the difference 😜
@@bjornnyland My MY RWD made in Dec 2022 has also around 125 wh/km at 70-80 kph. Perhaps Tesla made some changes to drivetrain and made it less efficient (cost) ? Or there is variance in battery / motor quality. In general same results as Björn's at 90 and 120 (in Sweden at 20 deg. C)
Model Y RWD was tested in Thailand and it averaged 104 Wh/km. That car didn't have mudflaps and had 19" tires with standard rims and wheelcaps. Tesla consistently makes way more efficient cars than the rest of the industry. Just look at efficiency numbers for Model 3, Y, S and X.
@@bjornnyland There's no VAG product to compare to but looks like the model 3 is on par in the Sunday driving test with BMW i4 despite skinnier tires, less weight and lowed cod. Same BMW is also on par in the range test efficiency despite same disadvantages. So at least BMW and VAG seem to know what they're doing but neither of them are willing to do what Tesla and Mercedes are doing on design to lower the cod. Also they're not willing to compromise on ride, sound proofing and features for weight.
It's quite cheap, has good efficiency and good info system. But the exterior design is awful, there's no driver/on screen display, it's too noisy, the battery is to smal, the finish still feels cheap in some areas, the ride comfort is mediocre, the soundsystem is mediocre, there's still no 360 camera view? It is cheap for a reason. I can't recall, does it also lack heated steering wheel and front window?
The car without radar and parking sensors can't be the best ev, even the range would be 1000 km :-) For me actual Tesla 3/Y is dangerous not only during parking but phantom breaking.. :-)
Yeah, its really bad, but not dangerous if you have a driver's license and use your eyes of course. Phantom braking is bad when a big car or truck is coming in the opposite lane on auto pilot, but if you just gently push the throttle to "comfort" the auto pilot when something big and scary is coming you override the phantom braking.
Phantom braking? Since the transition to Tesla Vision I have not experienced that anymore and I have driven about 30.000 km with it. However, I have a rental Polestar 2 now and it has already done an emergency brake twice on the highway within 7 days of driving it. Only a few days to go until the 15th when I can finally drive a Tesla again..
@@nielsvandenkieboom5034 yeah, my experience is on Norwegian roads with no center of the road separator and with cruise control it can phantom brake, but helping out with the throttle when road is bad or tight with big vehicle incoming it doesnt brake. So it's worst case scenario fully understand it does it, and I don't know if it would not brake with sensor in those cases either, just my experience it can phantom brake when some or all driver assistance levels are on.

I don't know how it is in the US, but Tesla 3/Y owners in Europe have a problem with either phantom braking or the adaptive cruise control turning off completely - especially at night.. Efficiency is important but you can't deny comfort, speed sign recognition, light, proper working wipers, reliable parking sensors
Actually the WLTP for Model Y with 20" rims is 430 KM
430 WLTP translates to about 250 km real range (100 to 10 %) in winter. Not terrible but also not great.

Those tyres are very efficient,the difference is due to the rims 20 inch looks better ,but it cost with comfort and millage.

The Y in Canada is too expensive for the specs. The ID.4, Ioniq 5 and EV6 far best Tesla in the value game.

I am driving Model Y RWD with 20", 9 months, 20°~36° climate, city drive, 24,000km, 150wh/km, just for reference.

Yeah the consumption with extra pressure is a little bit better, but driving comfort is wayyy worse…so for the few extra km its not worth it

Turn off hvac when preconditioning before supercharger is effective. Especially in winter. I also use scan my Tesla, so can confirm.
It depends. In summer when it's hot outside then you want to have HVAC on when preconditioning.

19" MY RWD in nz gets hancook tyres and over 10k km it's averaging 152wh/km for us so that 127kw/km looks pretty good to me lol

Just ordered the RWD Model Y in the US. Looking forward to it. This is to be wifey’s car, I drive a MB EQB 350 and have averaged 20.3 KWh per 100 km.
The Enyaq Coupe RS looks pretty good in this comparison! Tesla efficiency.
True. Meb platform has good rolling resistance. But thats all 😅. Crappy in winter and on higher speeds. Also... The price... Waaay more expensive...

@@DG-uv3zw the Model Y LR was running on 19 inches in that test. A more accurate comparison would be the MYP test on 21 inches since there's no difference between Model Y LR and Model Y Performance when it comes to efficiency, it's just about tire size. And on 21 inches it did 205.
And the Enyaq did 212 not 215....

Can i ask some european owners about the quality of the EU teslas? I ma from Bulgaria and we still do not have Tesla in Bulgaria so i am was thinking about buying the Model Y. But what is stopping me is the low quality of teslas in the past.
Does this RWD have matrix headlights? I‘m convinced my RWD had them, I think I can make out pixels, the headlight spread is so much wider, fuller and brighter than the LED lights in my 2019 M3 LR and the headlights display TESLA when I play the Easter egg light show.

So same efficiency as a Skoda Enyaq with 4wd, 21 inch wheels, 340kg more weight and a cod of 0.27. Hmmm, Tesla drive train seems to be pretty inefficient.
Or same as Model Y Performance. There's something weird with this car. Tesla drivetrain is one of the most efficient out there.
@@bjornnyland That's with 235mm tires and 18 inch wheels and it's still 240kg lighter and much more aerodynamic than the Skoda. Tesla is maximizing efficiency by doing a lot of compromises on weight and aero. I think the drive train itself is not very efficient but that's difficult to verify. Maybe add 4 people and an extra spoiler on the model Y to test the difference 😜
@@bjornnyland My MY RWD made in Dec 2022 has also around 125 wh/km at 70-80 kph. Perhaps Tesla made some changes to drivetrain and made it less efficient (cost) ? Or there is variance in battery / motor quality. In general same results as Björn's at 90 and 120 (in Sweden at 20 deg. C)
Model Y RWD was tested in Thailand and it averaged 104 Wh/km. That car didn't have mudflaps and had 19" tires with standard rims and wheelcaps.
Tesla consistently makes way more efficient cars than the rest of the industry. Just look at efficiency numbers for Model 3, Y, S and X.
@@bjornnyland There's no VAG product to compare to but looks like the model 3 is on par in the Sunday driving test with BMW i4 despite skinnier tires, less weight and lowed cod. Same BMW is also on par in the range test efficiency despite same disadvantages. So at least BMW and VAG seem to know what they're doing but neither of them are willing to do what Tesla and Mercedes are doing on design to lower the cod. Also they're not willing to compromise on ride, sound proofing and features for weight.

It's quite cheap, has good efficiency and good info system. But the exterior design is awful, there's no driver/on screen display, it's too noisy, the battery is to smal, the finish still feels cheap in some areas, the ride comfort is mediocre, the soundsystem is mediocre, there's still no 360 camera view? It is cheap for a reason.
I can't recall, does it also lack heated steering wheel and front window?

The car without radar and parking sensors can't be the best ev, even the range would be 1000 km :-) For me actual Tesla 3/Y is dangerous not only during parking but phantom breaking.. :-)
Yeah, its really bad, but not dangerous if you have a driver's license and use your eyes of course. Phantom braking is bad when a big car or truck is coming in the opposite lane on auto pilot, but if you just gently push the throttle to "comfort" the auto pilot when something big and scary is coming you override the phantom braking.
Phantom braking? Since the transition to Tesla Vision I have not experienced that anymore and I have driven about 30.000 km with it. However, I have a rental Polestar 2 now and it has already done an emergency brake twice on the highway within 7 days of driving it. Only a few days to go until the 15th when I can finally drive a Tesla again..
@@nielsvandenkieboom5034 yeah, my experience is on Norwegian roads with no center of the road separator and with cruise control it can phantom brake, but helping out with the throttle when road is bad or tight with big vehicle incoming it doesnt brake. So it's worst case scenario fully understand it does it, and I don't know if it would not brake with sensor in those cases either, just my experience it can phantom brake when some or all driver assistance levels are on.
@@nielsvandenkieboom5034 I hope nothing happens to your dog in the garage where the Tesla Vision can fail. I don't know how it is in the US, but Tesla 3/Y owners in Europe have a problem with either phantom braking or the adaptive cruise control turning off completely - especially at night.. Hopefully it will be resolved, it's about everyone's safety..
