  • This Video explores the installation of heat sinks and how effective they are after the reinvestigation and addition of heat transfer compound to my 2016 LG G4 smartphone 6 months on.
    If you have tried to install heat sinks to no-avail or you just want to replace your LG G4
    Check out these on Amazon as they are very cheap for a very capable phone.

    My LG G4 battery drains very fast and overheats? LG G4 battery drain & overheating are very common with LG G4 owners. There are a few things that we can try to do to fix the issue. Sometimes the battery drain on the LG G4 is the result of apps installed on the device. It could be that you have not optimized your battery settings and other settings on your LG G4 for optimal performance.
    This overheating is more prolific during the use of Google Maps, Navigation and camera apps
    It is possible that an app is causing your overheating problem so disabling them could help reduce the load on your processor. It may also be helpful to install Greenify to manage power consumption.
    After installing the heatsinks the LG G4 had better cooling but after 5 months the effectiveness lessened so I decided it was time to investigate the heatsinks so I could be sure they were still attached with the Araldite. Once I disassembled the phone for the second time it came to me that the application of Arctic Thermal Compound MX-4 would help further. I used the paste to assist the heat transfer to the heat sinks and heatshield to the case.

    Hi bro.. Thanks to make this amazing video?! Now I can make it even better, believe me it can reduce the heat by 60% more..
    So what we need is an:
    1.MX-4 Thermal paste (MUST)
    2.Thermal pad 0,5mm
    3.Copper pad 0,3mm
    That is the BEST combination, why?! Distance between machine to screen body is about 1mm.
    So, the pad which can be bounce 0,5mm to 0,4/0,3mm + copper pad 0,3mm + paste 0,1mm total max 0,8-0,9mm MAX?! STILL it has a range about 0,2mm which that won't PUSH to screen while the heat expand..at the last.. No screenburn cause by pressure of it.
    Hmmmfh,.. Funny huh?! I just buy LG G4 H818P N UPDATE IT to nougat in march 2020..
    I buy for my dad.. I like flagship mobile phone frim LG,..butI wait until the PRICE DROP to the lowest. However I don't want give this to him with SHITTY ORIGINAL CONDITION!! So i found u here..
    Appreciate it bro.. All the BEST!!

    I really like my G4 but initially found it got very warm and battery life was terrible. I have purchased as many OEM batteries as I can find. Ultimately I found keeping the number of apps to a minimum. Main screen I only have 10 (which of course are duplicated on apps screen.) The phone has all bloat wear disabled (many google and LG apps) If I need them I can enable them. Total 29 apps and I am always hunting for more reasons to drop others. I make sure wifi data do not conflict and GPS off unless using.

      I think you are not alone... The G4 is a very capable phone but with a serious design flaw in the CPU construction. Personally I feel not having a metal chassis also increases the risk of over heating.

    put that scalpel away, get yourself a plastic spudger tool and save your ribbon cables ;)
    I have some 0.5mm thickness thermal pads on order and will try those to repair my old LG G3. Last year I had an LG G3 with no working camera and no working simcard / sd slot, all due to these notorious overheating issues, and by baking the motherboard (to "reflow" the solder), and applying a little pressure on the CPU, I got it back to full working order (for about 3 months, until the sd card reader failed again, but it still worked fine other than that). All that changed yesterday - one year on - when the wifi and bt chip stopped working :(. I think might bake it again and this time, apply thermal pads too. I have nothing to lose.
    My LG G4 works fine, but does get hot enough at times that I do worry some components might fail like they did on the G3. I've had it for 2 years, but it still does a job for me, so why not keep it going as long as possible? Hopefully those thermal pads will be as good as people say they are :D

    Great video and help, congrats! However one critism. It looked like in the end you did not give enough time for the phone to heat up; it could have been nice to add a definite, say, a 5 minute heat up waiting period and then doing it, the measuring the heat. And question, does the heat paste get pasted and run around, or is it rather stable.

    Instead of using a sharp modelling knife, use a non-sharp plastic tool designed for the job. Or a thin wide flat bladed screwdriver blade. If you start from the tabs at the bottom, between the battery compartment and the edge, it's very easy. No risk of damaging or cutting a tab, or cutting a chunk of flesh.

      This is a very common problem with the LGG4. First close all background apps that are not system apps. Google maps was the worst for me but once i installed the heat sinks it has solved my issues. Obviously the phone is still working very hard because of the processor design but at least the temperature is managed and the phone does not use as much power or crashes anymore. For my situation this mod is very successful and now I'm keeping my LGG4. I hope you have the same success and if you have any queries please ask. Bon Chance

    Overheating mystery: A problem with the SIM card? As I left a flight and entered into the San Francisco International the SIM suddenly died. I walked into the terminal and the cellular signal dropped, and the phone was hot.
    I called T-Mobile and they could not detect the SIM. Other than pull the SIM out and rebooting the phone, then replacing the SIM nothing else was done to it by me. When I arrived home the phone remained inoperative. In the meantime T-Mobile must have done something on their end because 12 hours later the phone is working fine, it stays cool, has a strong signal, and the battery charge now lasts 48 hours instead of 8 hours as before. What gives?

    • @AndrewSowerby
      @AndrewSowerby 5 років тому +1

      Just curious if that problem came back since then?
      When my sim reader started failing, it came back to life for a while before dying again. I was able to get it to work by applying a few layers of tape to add some extra pressure there, but after a couple of months, even that didn't help. I gave up and bought a returned LG G4 for a bargain price, and I've had that ever since.
      However, after seeing some repair videos, I did end up removing the motherboard from the G3 and baking it in the oven for a few minutes to reflow the solder, and ever since then, the sim card reader worked fine. After about 3 months the sd card would suddenly unmount, and remount again some time later, and just yesterday the wifi/bt chip failed :(
      Time for another bake in the oven or maybe just some thermal pads, or both.

      There's no reason not to, given that it's just a simple case of popping the back cover off and lifting the battery out. In almost all of the more recent phones you have to apply heat to the back to loosen the glue, unscrew stuff, unclip adjacent component cables and so on, just to get to the stupid battery.

      I'm currently using cpu monitor, but it's like the title said, only monitor the cpu. I haven't found an app for monitoring the device temperature. But afaik, if the cpu stayed on 40+ celcius, it will heat up the phone eventually and it will became hot imo. While on gaming, it stayed at 45+, the highest it get is 53°, and the screen is hot yet still tolerable somehow. But yea the cpu is throttling so it won't give maximum performance, and I've forced to stop playing because of the performance drop. I'm just wondering, do the heatsink will keep the device cool, or it will halt the excessive heat, because in the end, after a long term use, it will heat up like the usual one

    My G4's coldest temp while running not even charging no apps, nothing fresh install of android and its 98c While charging it reaches anywhere from 100c to 110c It gets hotter than my laptop... I tried using paste, copper plates, etc and none are working

      Texas Tex that is way too hot ! Is that temperature coming from the cpu area ?

    • @TexasTex
      @TexasTex 6 років тому

      Yes and its just from idling

      Sounds like something running in the background that you're missing. Is your phone rooted and running a custom ROM?

    • @TexasTex
      @TexasTex 6 років тому

      My phone is stock rom, rooted and even fresh install of the system So i know its no third party app running in the background

    I have lg g4 stuck on the screen after a 5 -10 minute operation. It then restarts and it does over and over again. Will your method work on such case?

      I am afraid that you cpu has probably seperated. The Snapdragon has two chips on too of eachother which are affected when it gets too hot. It is possible to save phone by applying heat with iron to rebond the chips. There are vids online how to do this. Once done and working then apply heatsinks..Good luck

    The foil and copper is pointless. You'd see better performance out of just thermal compound.

      Thats true. Glueing copper plates can just ruin motherboard withouth able to recover. Use this tutorial only if after using thermal paste didnt helped. I used only thermal paste and my phone is much cooler now. After playing 1match mobile legends with medium graphics my top phone was only 23.6 degrees celcium.

      @@WallyboisWoodworking fair enough, regardless you've taken it apart a few times and not destroyed it so at least you can claim you're not incompetent.
      I just ordered a new G4, we'll see how it goes for me, I hope to not have to add heat sink compound. You'd think they'd have figured it out since 2015.

      Glue?? I did use thermal paste! Or are referring to bonding on the copper plates?

      @@WallyboisWoodworking maybe i heard wrong but i heard u said u left holes in plate so the glue would come out nd not make a patch of glue

    • @WallyboisWoodworking
      @WallyboisWoodworking  5 років тому

      That is right I glued the plates to the CPU. I did not use thermal paste there because of fear that they could fall onto other components and short the phone. I am still using the g4 although a bit rough looking now! Thank you for watching 😊
