I'm a drummer and Music Major, and I say that that was one hell of a performance! I have to play this song for my Jazz Band and I'll be using some of the licks Jeff used here. Superb!
Oh man - This is SO good. I would like to say that Mr Hamilton brings to life everything I love about jazz. He plays that solo and then respectful acknowledges Krupa at the end. He is a TRUE MASTER!!!
Jeff is an amazing drummer, and very humble as was Gene. Gene and his band went up against Chic Webb and his band. Gene said Chic "cut him to ribbons. To be honest, at the level Chic and Gene were at, I don't think anyone got cut to ribbons. Gene had great style, Jeff has amazing techinque. Gene did not have nearly the history of prior great drummers to draw on that Jeff does. The reality is they are both great, and different. Kind of hard to compare them. Let's just enjoy both!
I have the same drumset...... yet I can make it sound like that! After watching that I don't know whether to be motivated or give up! Jeff Hamilton has serious skills!
If anything, your video shows that Remo drums sound amazing. The sustain and warmth of Remos are unbeliable, the likes of Sleishman drum kits. I agree that Remo hardware are crap, but their sound quality is better than most drums out there. Remo Acousticon R 516 shells and modern Remo drum kits are some well kept secrets in the drumming world. Ricky Lawson, Louie Bellson, Terry Bozzio, Vinnie Paul played REMO Drums!
@ groovechop.......can't find any of your music on iTunes under the name groovechop. Also tried to look up how many people voted for groovechop in the latest Modern Drummer poll....(better luck next year I guess).....Tell us how many A list players called you this past year..... Listen to the humbleness and humility of JH at the end of the video and get a clue..
I think that these Remo drums sound very, very good. Have those who don't considered whether some kind of prejudice might be creeping in; e.g. brand loyalty or brand snobbery?
I agree completely. I think that people have an unfortunate tendency to believe that everything from the past automatically has to be best. A Ford model T is, no doubt, fun to own, and a joy for the enthusiasts that maintain and display them so lovingly. However, every aspect of a Ford Focus's performance will be superior. Apart from the evidence in this video, it is in any case highly likely that drum technique will have been enhanced over the decades, like most other things.
I am sure you tried to sound ironic right now; you´re better than Mr. Hamilton, of course drumchakra. I especially like YOUR version of Sing, sing, sing. It´s one of your many fantastic videos!
Great playing, but lacks the warm sound the Slingerlands had, when Gene played the song. I would have like to see you play a vintage Slingerland, on this. The warm sound of a kit will always improve this song.
@audioonly1 Even my Gretsch Catalina Jazz Club sounds better than the Remos. Why didn't Jeff use Gretsch or Craviotto????? Can imagine how his style will sound on a Craviotto set??????
love hearing drummers making noises when playing awesome
Wow he is really making the drums sing a melody...this is pretty incredible lol.
I'm a drummer and Music Major, and I say that that was one hell of a performance! I have to play this song for my Jazz Band and I'll be using some of the licks Jeff used here. Superb!
Beautiful.. Knowing this arrangement, Jeff's melodic playing makes it very easy to follow, and fun to watch! :)
That was THE BEST version i've ever heard in my 56 years. And no Gene could NOT have played it any better.
Wrong, he couldn't hold Gene's sticks. No comparison, Krupa was the best on Sing, Sing, Sing.
Complete bullsh** from you
Excellent!!! No other instruments are needed to have the music fully identified and experienced. Truly impressive performance, thank you.
This is the most insane drum vid I have ever watched
Dang man, this guy ROCKS! Especially this song, this is the coolest (and only) drum-improved version of this song I've ever heard!!!
Talk about making drums sing.
Jeff is right up there with the best of them.....
Very humble of him to say that Gene would’ve done it better. If this was done in the 40’s, people would think that Jeff was Genes father✊
I played a concert last night with Jeff Hamilton and the rest of his trio. I'm a junior in high school.
Oh man - This is SO good. I would like to say that Mr Hamilton brings to life everything I love about jazz. He plays that solo and then respectful acknowledges Krupa at the end. He is a TRUE MASTER!!!

I love you Jeff! You are my inspiration to continue playing drums!
The melody comes out clear. How cool is that.
If Jeff was born in the 30's everyone will considered the best jazz drummer of all times!!!!!!
Loved Jeff on the Paris dvd with Diana Krall.
wonderful! I can hear the big band accompanying you in my head!
This piece is a jewel ! So is the player.
This is the highest tribute to the one and only Gene Krupa!!
WOW! GK would be so proud of this!
That was FANTASTIC!!!
Fantastic -his very own style Hooray Jeff
Wow one of the best versions i've herd!!
Merveilleux ! Bravo, bravo, bravo !!!
Jeff is one of the very best !!!!
WOW!!!! That was awesome!
The best musical drummer ever - plays drums like a lead guitarist 👍👏
The funiest thing- big "Zildjian " logo in front!! A part of that-true art, what mr. Hamilton is doing with drums.
I have the same drumset...... yet I can make it sound like that! After watching that I don't know whether to be motivated or give up! Jeff Hamilton has serious skills!
What a player...Master!!!
I'd love to get the sheet music for that. That would be a lot of fun to play.
Tuned higher than Gene used to, on his Slingerland Radio Kings ..
Great drumming of a great song.
Roy Beckerman Gene had much bigger toms and bass drum (a 18” floor tom, 13 x 9” rack-tom and 24 x 14” bass drum)
Harri Airaksinen
I’d still like to have heard Jeff play on a identical kit...that’s where the big sound comes from.
wow. Ican't seem to get my jaw off the floor
Outstanding!

Real artist!
I've known jeff since I was a kid, and it scares me to know that this is physically possible. He is quite sight to see live.
you said it perfectly.
Never heard a "song" on the drums like that.
Al drum solos should be songs!
i think g.k. would give a thumb up ;)
Did anyone else notice that Jeff Hamilton was kinda singing what he was playing. You can kinda hear it near the end of the solo
Fantastic
Jeff has a 14" and at the time of the original Sing Sing Sing recording, Gene used 16"s. In the 50s, he began using a 16" and 20" floor tom
Sensacional.
I think that these Remo drums sound very, very good. Have those who don't considered whether some kind of prejudice might be creeping in; e.g. brand loyalty or brand snobbery?
Gene see thise Jeff ! Great!!!
Gene see this!!!Sands Great Like Him!!!

jeff hamilton es un dios
a real musician!
Bravo
so musical, my goodness
The good players only need a 4 piece kit, a ride and a crash.
Certainly much easier to cart around and set up.
yea you're right
Yes !!
Jeff plays a smaller bebop style kit so, regardless of the brand, they aren't going to sound as "big" as Gene's Slingerland kit from that time
Very melodic. Something that many drummers, no matter how great their chops, tend to get away from on this song
Brilliantly played….but just wish it was on a bigger, deeper sounding kit, like Gene Krupa’s SLINGERLANDS.
in his normal gigs with his own groups and Diana Krall, the small drums are fine. Sing Sing Sing and other big band tunes need bigger drums
amo essa! demais! gosto do grupo de 1940 o the clark sisters cantando!
Because Jeff Hamilton likes the Remo kit. It's his sound.
Would love to hear him on Slingerlands, like Gene.
I wish I could do that.
Haha, you are the king of your basement, nothing else!! And that is what you´ll always be.
Great drum playing but I wish he had a couple Zildjian crash cymbals.
Whoa! :D
I am sure you tried to sound ironic right now; you´re better than Mr. Hamilton, of course drumchakra. I especially like YOUR version of Sing, sing, sing. It´s one of your many fantastic videos!
This Guy Is A Bad Ass Drummer.
Great playing, but lacks the warm sound the Slingerlands had, when Gene played the song.
I would have like to see you play a vintage Slingerland, on this.
The warm sound of a kit will always improve this song.
well I guess he can play
Why do I hear george, george, george of the jungle?
the first part sounds exactly like jazzes part in Fresh prince of Bel Air where will smith yells and dances =))) - bang the drums Ashley =))
nice!
Excellently done but I much preferred the sound of Gene's floor tom. Jeff H's didn't carry the jungle mood in the same way IMO
本気ですごいw
鳥肌立ったw
上手いもんですねぇ✨
Bosphorus cymbals, I notice . Nice.
Sure is a big difference - tuning as well as tom size.
@Drums5B hahah Xd yes :D
actually Jeffs is a 14" floor tom..
Suprem
Σ(・Д・;)すげぇー!笑笑
so melodic reminds me of max roach but better!
Well, go listen to Gene play it then
@audioonly1 Even my Gretsch Catalina Jazz Club sounds better than the Remos. Why didn't Jeff use Gretsch or Craviotto????? Can imagine how his style will sound on a Craviotto set??????
Gear does not define a players style and feel.
See but Gene couldn’t have tho
The Remos sound great. I have a set of those. good drums
Great playing, but not a fan of the sound of the drums.
Would like to have heard this on Slingerlands, like Gene Krupa.
