For the folks that need it: 1 cup water 1 teaspoon tea tree oil 1 teaspoon wintergreen oil 1 teaspoon spearmint oil About 10 drops of lemongrass oil Blend on low for five minutes
im a new keeper,,,,ive done almost everything you've done from sugardustin mites to this vid all last year startin in June of 2021,,THEY WORK,,i like the no chemical way,,hell,,my bees made it thru the snowbelt,,, i live in (Ashtabula,Oh),,i have NO MITES so far(4-28-22),im gonna donate $20 too,,,GREAT INFO
oh btw, thank you so much for all the things you have done for bees and us as beeks. you have helped countless people with your videos and training, and it is extremely appreciated. If ever I get as good, I hope to do the same with others eventually.
BROOD BUILDER (honey bee healthy) FORMULA 1cup of water in blender 1tsp tee tree oil (120 drops) 1tsp wintergreen oil (120 drops) 1tsp spearmint oil (120 drops) 10 drops lemongrass oil then blend on low for five minutes Metric conversion For every litre of bee feed 1 drop tee tree oil 1 drop wintergreen oil 1 drop spearmint oil 0.165 drops lemongrass oil Also I think Don may of meant to say eucalyptus and not spearmint.
So if I understand this correctly, this is a scaled down version of the brood builder formula for those of us who only make a gallon or so of syrup at a time. As well it appears you only use one drop of the 3 oils per liter which I believe is very close to equivalent to a quart. Is this understanding correct?
Thanks for everything Don! Sean P asked a question I would like to know as well. How often can you feed bees this mixture? Only had a hive for a month now. I added a deep and checker boarded it. I haven't noticed a lot of honey storage in the hive, so I thought it would be best to try feeding them. They eat about 4 cups syrup in less then 48 hrs. I was surprised.
Thank you sir for your supersonic fast reply to my question: which was after the E/Ois emulsified ,does it remain so or the E/O separates after awhile .The oil molecule breaks down therefore it stays emulsified -Thank you again, much obliged
Thank Don! So once you add water to the glass jar you will use 1 cup for every 2 gallons of water, did I get that right? Also is it put in a 50/50 sugar water or just water? Thanks FBM, you are the best!
I gather the oils are food grade but is there any concern with using this formula with the tea tree and wintergreen oils when the honey supers are on? I only ask as I haven't used the formula with the tea tree and wintergreen oils yet.
Forage is getting scarce but I want my queens to keep laying tu build up the colonies. I've given brood builder and I'm feeding sugar water in open feeding. (no other bees for miles out here). How much sugar do I have to feed them to keep them stimulated and laying? If I give them all they want they'll eat me out of house and home. Is there some trick to keep them building numbers? Thanks!
Dear FBM, I only have two hives that I started off from packages about a month and a half ago. What would be the proportion of this concentrate that I would add to a gallon or two of 1:1 syrup? Thanks, Casey M
Greetings from North Mississippi. What would the mixture be for a 55 gal drum of syrup? Thanks for your videos. I've been feeding this mixture in my 1 and 2 gallon feeders. I just bought a drum, and I want to mix it in the drum
I'm sorry I am confused, but in the video you say 1 cup will mix with 2 gallons, but then you say you will take that jar which is half a gallon and mix it in a 40 gallon tank of syrup. well half a gallon is 8 cups, which would only make 16 gallons right? also I am having a hard time being absolutely sure on the first ingredient. is that 1 tsp. tea tree oil?
@@fineshooter Hi Don...This is a year late, but just some information regarding oils. From what I have read, there is really no such thing as food grade oil. There is not really any governing body that determines this, so the industry can call it what they want. If your dealing with the oils you mentioned (tea tree, spearmint, wintergreen, lemon grass), as long as they are 100% oil and no additives or anything than they are food grade. Now, you can find organic oils as those are certified. However, when it comes to oils, as long as they are 100% oil and that particular oil is safe to consume than it can be considered food grade. For example, if a company sells two oils, both oregano and one says food grade and the other says aroma therapy but both are 100%, than they likely exactly the same..Below is a link to an article that explains it a bit more than this if anyone is interested momprepares.com/food-grade-essential-oils/
Yes, you can get the food grade essential oils through Lorann oils online. If you mention you are using them for bee keeping they will help you sign up for purchasing at a discounted price.
hi don i have watched all of your shows and i have tryed alot of the things you have shown us but i just want to know wheir you get your oils in jars that big and can you buy them in food stores or were can you order them.
I was speaking to a health food store, and its no problem that they would bring it in. However, I have found some on ebay as well which are much larger and certainly supply most beekeepers as well.
i know this is a little off topic but in my hive i just checked 1 hour ago i notice all the bees outside the hive are new bees, young bees no adults just tiny guys is there a problem or its just all the larvay hatching at once a coincidence little woried please message me asap please
Sorry but just to confirm does the recipe use Eucalyptus or Spearmint oil? I just want to make sure I order the correct items. Thanks for your input and help on this?
David Hershberger I was looking through the comments just to see if anyone else was going to ask.. I was under the impression that eucalyptus oil was somewhat toxic to bees from my research
Hi Don.. At what point do you swap over from the essential oils to the pollen substitute? do you mix the substitute in with the oils ? Thanks, Keith & Mary
I have no ideal what kind of honey bees they are other than wild honey bees mix with some thing, cause there bigger than the natural wild honey bees i have and there very strong. id think Italians bees will NOT mess with them, thats how strong they are. I been messing with them and watching them, there a little defensive at 1' from them but pretty com bees
Thyme oil which has Thymol as its active ingredient and Cinnamon oil which has cinnamoldehyde as its active ingredient (%40) are some of the most powerful anti microbial (fungal and bacterial) essential oils around.
I cought a swarm 5/19 The drones are so big i just about can ride them, there size of a quarter, the actively on these bee like there on speed, there very active running around on the hive and flying in and out, idk what they been eating but i sure could use some of there energy WOW They have brown legs with yellow and black strip there just GEORGES LOOKING the brown really sets them off, thinking of using them for breeders
For the folks that need it:
1 cup water
1 teaspoon tea tree oil
1 teaspoon wintergreen oil
1 teaspoon spearmint oil
About 10 drops of lemongrass oil
Blend on low for five minutes
Omit the lemongrass during dearth.
@@honeyspoonbeewrangler4550 Do you think we could add Thyme instead of Lemongrass? Also how much of this does in 1 gal of sugar water?

You put smile on my father's face sir. Cheers from far far away (Cyprus)
I lived in Nicosia for a few years.
I am really enjoying and learning from your Es. Of Oils videos. Really looking forward to the one you are doing concerning mites.
Thanks Don! I love watching your videos, and have learned a lot of useful information

I think "Eucalyptus" is a brand name in essential oils. They do make spearmint.

Thanks Don.. You always a kind man..
Where do you get your large bottles of essential oils?
You are the Best!
I like your formula for forty-gallon How much of the mixture would you use for one gallon?
If I am worried about emulsification can I use some soy lecithin? I use it to make hand creams. Do you think it would be safe for bees?
If you only have a few hives, how much of this would you mix into individual feeders?
I figured one teaspoon, maybe a drop or two more, per gallon of syrup.
When do you feed this to your bees?
Thank you bee man. I feel the bees are going to thank you to.
Is the Wintergreen oil one that is also be used for flavoring and aroma therapy and is food grade?
Can I add this to my sugar board mixture?
you could add small amount
Hello, have you lost hives to colony collapse disorder, what do you suspect is the cause and what if any preventative measures would you recommend.
Spearmint? That bottle reads "Eucalyptus". :)
I used a empty bottle because I buy in gal jug
Thank Don! So once you add water to the glass jar you will use 1 cup for every 2 gallons of water, did I get that right? Also is it put in a 50/50 sugar water or just water? Thanks FBM, you are the best!

How long will your drum of syrup late? Do you add anything to make the mixture last longer? Thanks so much.

You add water to your mixture until it reaches how much concentrate in the bottle ? 4 cup?

Does the oils used in this need to be food grade?
yes food grade
Ok thanks for your time and the info. I will proceed accordingly.
Yes absolutely!!!! YOU may get it in your honey!!!!
Sorry about the repeat question! I appreciate the info. Can you suggest a supplier for the oils?

Do the oils need to be food grade. I have found a bunch that are therapeutic grade. They all say some people eat them, but they don’t recommend it.

hi was wondering when you added the spearmint oil the label on the bottle says eucalyptus oil

Sou do Brasil apicultor me mandar essa fórmula aqui não usamos isso passa pra mim por favor obrigado
Hello! You said spearmint oil, but the bottle label says eucalyptus oil??
the most time it is used up quick. it stays mixed for several weeks.
Don
You seem to have decently large bottles of these essential oils. Where do you get them and how much are you paying per bottle?
How long do you feed the bees this mixture?? Thanks
Where do you buy your oils in that size? I have been searching for them and can only find little bottles
I would think Health Food Stores or Drug Stores maybe.
When I saw that I was wondering the same thing. Janice
I was speaking to a health food store, and its no problem that they would bring it in. However, I have found some on ebay as well which are much larger and certainly supply most beekeepers as well.
Camden-Grey Co., they are in Florida
Just go online for bulk essential oils....

1 cup mix in 2 gallons of syrup ?
Counting your money!
how often to use mixture every day or
Thanks for the smile
this is probably a stupid question, but where do you get the oils that you used in this mixture??
Lorann Oils
How do you make lemon grass oil?
Don't do this in a plastic mixer like a ninga it will melt trust me
No plastics. All glass! The seals don't like it neither, rinse well after use.
You can add a bit of alcohol and all of it will be dissolved.
So???? How much concentrate in a quart of sugar water????
Hi Don.. At what point do you swap over from the essential oils to the pollen substitute? do you mix the substitute in with the oils ?
Thanks, Keith & Mary
Is the measurement a teaspoon? You used a tablespoon.
no it was a teaspoon

You were measuring. I was taught a 4 second pour was an ounce. Just saying.
I'm sorry. I just watched the video again and you said 1cup for two gallons.

You need first pollen.. no pollen no egg..
you might try re queening your hives.I don't own a bee suit. most my students don't either.
